E-Book Version 1 Star - Author & Good Books Publishing PLEASE FIX

Great recipes - all the other reviews show that - the 1 stars is because of the Navigation experience of this e-book version which they sell. It's obvious no one at that publisher tried to ever "really" use this book in any kind of e-book reader device or tablet.

Unlike a real dead tree book which you can quickly thumb through and stop at a glance and continue until you find something you're looking for, on the e-book you can't do that in no easy way. You more or less have to go through each page looking for the recipes you want - 1400 OF THEM! Seriously!! The table of context of the E-book is set up in section - Beef, Pork, Chicken, things like that, but within those sections there are hundreds of recipes - which means you still have to go through them each one at a time. It's just a bad joke.

I use digital readers, and tablets for all my reading material becauses it is light to carry with me all the time when I need or want them. In the case with a recipe book it's great to have with you when you go shopping so you can make sure you buy all the ingredients you need for any recipe you decide on or, when you change your mind at the last minute. Of course you can set up something like bookmarks in the digital book reader for the recipes you want to save and use again, but finding those recipes in the first place is pretty much a horrible experience. LETS FACE IT, in the modern digital age where paper isn't being wasted there is no reason why the table of context of this book shouldn't have a collapsable table of context of the name of each recipe listed with a link to that page of the recipe in this ebook! (HINT HINT - ARE YOU LISTENING PHYLLIS PELLMAN GOOD & GOOD BOOKS PUBLISHING?) It would make all the difference in using this recipe book in a digital reader as a functional tool in everyday real life. Please consider making such changes - and this recipe book would easily be a 10 star book in a 5 star rating!

A little disappointed

When I saw that this cookbook had 1,400 recipes, I thought "HOW AMAZING!". When I rec'd the cookbook, however, I was quickly disappointed. While it, is helpful to see a suggested size of crock pot for each recipe, it is somewhat disappointing that many of the recipes call for Crock Pot inserts. They are pans designed to fit inside of your crock pot and we don't own any of those. The crock pot insert substitute they offer, is using a metal coffee container. I dont think I would enjoy placing something like that in my crock pot, it just seems so odd. Additionally, some of the recipes are extremely repetitive. I don't think a cook book needs 30 variations on how to make queso, for example, when really the ingredient variation is so slight, it should not call for an entirely new recipe. I also think that many of the recipes are, well, for lack of better words,lame. For example, there is a soup recipe that calls for a can of V-8 juice, a cup of chicken broth and a can of green beans. I thought it was a little odd that something like that would even count as a real recipe. There are many more examples of things like that as well, but I don't have time to write them all in this review!

At any rate, I think that if you are an experienced cook, or crock pot user, you would find the majority of this cook book a little juvenile. However, for someone who is not as experienced in cooking, they would probably enjoy it more. If you don't have cooking inserts for your crock pot, there are many recipes you won't be able to use, so I would remember to take that into consideration as well.

No Individual Recipe List. Needs Specific Table of Contents!

Kindle edition does not have a searchable table of contents. Extremely awkward to use. Looks like good recipes but so hard to find them. Index is by ingredient. Badly needs index for individual recipes in each category. PLEASE CREATE A FIX!

This book really captured me...

This is a compelling read. Once into it, I couldn't put it down. The author's excellent descriptive style and detailed journaling drew me into his world and made it a very present and personal experience. I witnessed through his eyes the physical and mental brutality of life on a heavily bombed military base. And as his world crumbled, I shared the emotional chaos which followed. It was all at once touching and frightening, angering and, in the end, inspiring. At times, it made me cry.
This book is an incisive and deeply moving chronicle of the effects of war on the human mind and spirit and a poignant portrayal of one man's fall into the dark abyss of PTSD and his journey back to life. I enthusiastically endorse it to anyone interested in war stories, to anyone touched in some way by trauma and PTSD, to anyone who believes in the transcendence of the human spirit.

A Brutally Honest Window into Abstract History

If you've ever wondered what it is really like to be the "boots on the ground", this is your answer! It's all here from start to finish, the oddessy that deployment involves- all captured in remarkable detail and shared in a compelling, cohesive story. This book fills in the blanks about what it is really like to be sent halfway around the world to support a massive movement of troops, and the honesty that it is written with reveals many astounding details of how little was actually accomplished-despite damaging so many lives.
The author does an amazing job of opening his mind and heart, inviting the reader to experience the terrifying roller coaster of emotions he endured, from the crippling tedium of the unending logistical and bureaucratic misery, to the deadening relentless terror of being constantly barraged by enemy fire and having no control whatsoever of whether you live or die. The only thing that I can imagine would be worse is to be forced to endure all of this for a cause that you completely morally disagreed with, out of a sense of duty to your country and your unit- exactly as the author did. This book is a snapshot of a point in time in history that most people will never think much about, yet it is exactly the kind of vivid narrative that if more people understood the reality of, it would result in a better future as more people could draw on when the abstract word "war" is proposed as a solution. This book is a window into another reality, and it reveals a dark truth and shines a light where darkness has been allowed to remain for far too long.

I worked on this book with Scott, and it was one of my most rewarding experiences as an editor. Scott brought real heart and earnestness to this book, a determination to both inform the reader of what life was like in Iraq and to find meaning in himself after an experience that nearly undid him. When most people think of war, they think of bloody firefights and brief moments of terror, heroism, and sacrifice. But for most, war is not like that at all. For Scott, it was repairing helicopters in a poorly secured forward operating base, enduring the accumulating low-grade terror of enemy mortars randomly lobbed into the base at random intervals, knowing that every day held the possibility of an instantaneous, unavoidable, and seemingly pointless maiming or death.

Lines in the Sand is a story of loss, loss of loved ones, loss of trust, and loss of identity, even purpose. But it's much more than that as well. It's the story of a man reclaiming himself through great personal effort. In his expansive honesty, Scott brings to the reader a harrowing case study of a man pushed to the brink by PSTD, and an inspiring memoir of how a man can learn to live with himself in a world where everything he had believed in had turned to dust.

A variety of publications cover the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y 14.SM standard Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT). One problem faced by those who are responsible for inspection is the fact that most of these publications cover the subject of GDT only from the point of view of the draftsperson, designer, or manufacturing engineer. There are few sources of information for the people who have to inspect the end product with respect to these tolerances. Many who understand geometric tolerances and inspection methods have learned them the hard way—through mistakes and experience. The primary purpose of this book is to provide a source of learning for specific methods and techniques that can be used to ensure functional inspection of geometric tolerances. This book is designed specifically for operators, machinists, inspectors, quality technicians and engineers, and other people in manufacturing companies who have the need to know about inspection methods and techniques.

Some assumptions were made during the preparation of this book. One is that the reader already understands how to use and care for standard inspection equipment. A variety of inspection gages and measuring instruments (such as micrometers, indicators, surface plates, right-angle plates, and precision parallels) will be used in the examples, and it is assumed that the reader knows how to use this equipment. Many available textbooks cover the fundamentals of measuring and gaging equipment if the reader should need to study these topics.

Another assumption is that the reader works with GDT on engineering drawings per the ASME Y14.SM standard. The ASME symbols are interpreted in this book to the extent necessary to understand the inspection or gaging method discussed. An introduction to each symbol and some key facts about the symbol provide the reader with the interpretation necessary to perform the inspection and to better understand the symbol and its application. There are many different applications for GDT on a wide variety of products and functional requirements. It is not possible to cover all the different combinations and applications in one text. This book does, however, cover all the geometric tolerances in the standard, a representative sample of applications, and more than one method of inspection for each symbol.

Coverage of inspection methods for each symbol will begin with a sample drawing of a part, an explanation of the geometric requirement, a review of the GDT rules and tolerance zones that apply, and, finally, step-by-step instructions and photos for the inspection or gaging method. Readers should try to consider an application of their own as they are studying the various inspection and gaging methods covered in this book. For example, the methods illustrated might cover an example using a small part that are the same methods for larger parts using larger equipment. In every case, the rules and tolerance zones for each symbol are the same as the examples indicate, except that different amounts of tolerances are often applied.

It is important to understand that all the tolerance values used in this book are examples only and do not in any way constitute standard tolerance values. Tolerances for a given design depend solely on the design requirement. All inspection methods and techniques carry with them a certain amount of inherent error. The limitations of each method will also be covered so that appreciable measurement errors can be avoided.

Another assumption is that readers will use the knowledge obtained from each application covered to help them see how the inspection could be performed with other similar instruments, keeping in mind that a wide variety of measuring machines could be used for the inspection.

Most of the parts used in this book, except those with a specific credit line, have been machined specifically for use in the book and are the property of the author. All the measuring instruments used in this book are used instruments that have been donated by various companies, or the company has allowed the author access to its equipment. Although most of the instruments are second-hand, they provide good physical examples of each measurement method covered. This second edition offers the following changes and additions:

Extensive revisions have been made to all text and graphics to update the book to the latest revision of the reference standard (American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.SM-1994)).
Symmetry has been separated into a new Chapter 17.
A new Chapter 18 has been added, entitled Introduction to Functional Gage Design.
New photos of functional gages have been added in Chapter 18.
New applications have been covered that are found only in the latest 1994 ASME standard.

Finally, this book has been limited by the type and amount of gages and products that have been donated for use in the examples. There are many different kinds of equipment on the market today that are more sophisticated than the equipment used in this book, but the principles of measuring geometric tolerances are well demonstrated by these traditional measuring tools and gages.

Best "Open Setup" GDT book on the market!

This is by far the best "open setup" textbook on GDT on the market. Gary has created two books (the other one called The Quality Technician Handbook) that are of high-quality and very useful to any machinist, engineer, technician,.... interested in quality control. They do require a minimum of understanding of the field of inspection so the novice needs to make sure that he/she gets help from a qualified co-worker or instructor when he/she has questions about the content.

Life in all its complexity and frustration

"There is no human being, no matter how despicable he may seem, who cannot stand out in something.”

This line from early in the novel is spoken in relation to the character Izquierdo, a useless man (up to that point), who is a braggart but also surrogate father to a little boy, the near feral Pitsuo. The line is interesting because while at first glance it might seem a positive statement - it could be an internet platitude - Galdós does not actually say that the something anyone can stand out in would be a good something. There is no judgment made here at all, in fact. And it is this lack of judgment which raises this novel from mere ordinary masterpiece to one of the 10 greatest novels ever written.

For a novel this long and with so many characters, summing it up is a challenge, however I think it would be fair to compare it to Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”. In Tolstoy’s novel Anna is a woman who wants to live life the way she chooses but continually is pushed back down by a society that refuses to accept her ideas. She is judged by society and family, and her fate is unfortunate. The same is true with Fortunata. Though unlike Anna she is not of the upper-class (in fact she is from the lowest class), her pride and stubbornness cause her an endless series of trials and devastations. She is a woman who wants to live how she sees fit to do so, but cannot and she pays dearly.

Another parallel between the novels is through the Tolstoy’s Levin and Galdós Guillermina. Both are held up as examples of the ideal life (as imagined by the author). Levin tries to be a peasant and Guillermina does the work of a saint through her orphanage. Both characters have their flaws (though Guillermina’s are more subtle and only once does she really stumble in the novel), and both characters act to balance the tide of the other major character (Levin : Anna, and Guillermina : Fortunata).

To continue the comparison, both novels invest the reader deeply into their respective cultures of the novelist. Tolstoy drops us headlong into upper-class Russian society of the mid to late 19th century, and Galdós recreates nearly every avenue, shop, and slum of Madrid around the same time period. We inhabit vibrant, breathing worlds full of color, noise, pettiness, sadness, and beauty as written only by authors intimately familiar with them in real life. Future archaeologists, armed with little more than these two novels could recreate a convincing simulation of Russia and Spain of the 19th century.

But we must leave Tolstoy and Anna at their train station in St Petersburg because while there are many parallels between the two novels, Galdós turns his attention not to how society affects the individual, but how individuals affect the society they live in. Galdós is interested in the worlds we create, either in our own minds (madness and fixation are key themes in this novel), but also in reality with the ever changing of the Spanish government of the time and the formation and dissolution of the various tertulia (gossip and discussion groups).

“Fortunata and Jacinta: Two Stories of Married Women” has been called the second greatest Spanish novel - Don Quixote being the first. And both novels are interested in similar ideas: what is real? Don Quixote is, obviously, mistaken in his observations (we all know of his famous windmills), but Galdós is more realistic. He forces us to ask ourselves why Fortunata can’t, in fact, find happiness with Juanito. Yes, we know society would never permit such a thing since Juanito is married in the eyes of God and society to Jacinta, but that’s a much different construct than believing a windmill is really a monster. Galdós is asking us to question why we accept society as it is, he just does it more subtly than Miguel de Cervantes did. There no real reason why Juanito can’t just leave his wife for someone he might love more, it’s just a construct of society that prevent him (as well as the fact that he’s a “player” and doesn’t really love anyone anyway).

Guillermina, this novel’s Saint, is also asking these same questions, but in a much different way and does so much more proactively. Instead of sulking around wishing reality were better, she actually does something about it - she’s harasses anyone and everyone to give money, bricks, timber, fuel, even a hat or a pair of pants for her orphanage. Businessmen, clergy, the wealthy and even the poor with something to give are not safe from her alms requests, and if you don’t have something to give, she’ll put you to work. She shakes up the dusty, lazy masses and gets them onto something more productive.

And all the characters engage in their own world building, no matter how small (Dona Lupa’s fake, cotton breast), to Maximiliano’s lunacy, to Feijoo’s pragmatic (and very modern) world view and advice for Fortunata, and even poor Mauricia (who looks just like Napoleon) and her drunken delirium. One character, the above mentioned Izquierdo, finds work as an artist’s model posing as famous historical figures, and another, Ballester, sees himself as capable of truly loving Fortunata. Everyone here is possessed by their own demons and delusions, hopes and fears, and it all mixes up to create fabric of life where everyone is interconnected - a theme Tolstoy explores in War and Peace where every person contributes to and is affected by the tides of history.

As I read over my notes for this novel I realize I’m only touching the very surface here. This is a massive novel, not just in size (over 800 pages in my hardcover edition), but massive in its beauty, too. Though Galdós is not given to long, overly poetic descriptions of nature, there is still an enormous amount of beauty here, but it’s always countered by the reality of whatever given situation the characters find themselves. We may see a beautiful countryside one day, and over the next few weeks have that view blocked by a church being built. No image serves one purpose, everything here is working overtime to show us life in all its complexity and frustration.

On a personal note I was greatly moved by this novel. I feel as if I were to one day walk down to my mailbox only to discover the world’s largest and most perfectly cut diamond just laying right there on the sidewalk in broad daylight with everyone walking right past it and not seeing it. In fact I’m actually mad that this novel is not spoken in the same breath as Anna Karenina, or Don Quixote, or Ulysses, or Middlemarch, or Moby Dick. This is a novel of the same quality and greatness as the greatest of the masterpieces ever published, yet it is almost nearly forgotten - and is, currently as I write this, out of print in English. Madness.
And so now, like one of the characters in the novel, I feel as if I should become obsessed with the idea of telling the world about Galdós and his nearly forgotten masterpiece. I want to read everything the man ever wrote, then re-read it, and spend my life writing about what I’ve read, and go digging through academic journals for the handful of people who have written scholarly work on him so I can look them up, correspond with them, and start book groups devoted to nothing but Galdós! Perhaps this could be my new reality, like a character in the novel who chooses for whatever stubborn, mad, or illogical reason to do what he wants for reasons he’s not quite sure of.

And maybe I’ll wind up like Maximiliano who stands before his future where on one hand he’s entering a monastery because he’s seen the light or on the other he’s being committed to an insane asylum because the light he sees is only corrupting him.

Excellent if overlong realist novel

Fortunata and Jacinta is widely considered to be the greatest Spanish novel of the 19th century. The setting is Madrid in the 1870s, a time of great political turmoil. While the novel references some of the historical events taking place at the time, its focus is an intensely detailed and realistic portrait of the characters who inhabit it.

Juan Santa Cruz, the spoiled only child of a prosperous merchant family, has grown up to become an idle playboy. The latest object of his attentions is Fortunata, the beautiful and free-spirited niece of a local market vendor. She becomes his mistress. Appalled at the possibility of a connection to someone so far below their own social level, Juan's parents hustle him into courtship and marriage. His bride is Jacinta: pretty, refined, saintly, and loving. For a while, Jacinta makes her husband forget about Fortunata.

Meanwhile, Fortunata has caught the eye of Maximiliano Rubín, a sickly young pharmacy student. "Maxi," pious and chaste, makes it his project to redeem Fortunata from her poverty and her sinful past. He is determined to make her his wife, even though she confesses she can never love such a pathetic creature. Besieged by a flood of priestly advice from all sides, Fortunata consents to a loveless marriage to save her soul. But once she's another man's wife, Juan Santa Cruz, bored with Jacinta, comes back into her life. The ecstasy and anguish she has experienced in the past is nothing compared with what's to come.

Fortunata is the novel's pivotal character and its central idea. Crude and illiterate, yet beautiful and artlessly charming, violent yet loving, spiteful but forgiving, she both enchants and exasperates everyone around her. Everyone is always trying to change Fortunata--to reform her, tame her, and educate her--and she is always trying to change herself. Yet in the end, one closest to her admits that all these efforts were in vain:

I wasn't the only one who was deceived; she was, too. We defrauded each other. We didn't take nature into account, the grand mother and teacher who rectifies the errors of those of her children who go astray. We do countless foolish things and nature corrects them. We protest against her admirable lessons, which we don't understand, and when we want her to obey us, she grabs us and smashes us to bits, as the sea does whoever tries to rule it.

The intractability of human nature is demonstrated in the public sphere as well as the private. During the period of Fortunata and Jacinta Spain went through several governments, from monarchy to republic and back to monarchy. These events aren't directly shown in the novel--the characters' lives are remarkably unaffected, in fact, by their country's state of virtual anarchy--but we see opinions and convictions vacillate as frequently as the political winds change. Just as Juan Santa Cruz always wants the woman he shouldn't have, the public is always in favor of the faction that is out of power at the moment.

Fortunata and Jacinta is about a place almost as much as it is about people. Pérez Galdós describes Madrid in loving detail: the rhythms of daily life, the sounds and smells of the market place, the ebb and flow of trade, the traffic jams and quiet alleyways, the hullabaloo of café society. The physical world is constantly a part of the novel in the texture of clothing, the taste of a confection, the distant sound of a piano, and the vibration from booted feet climbing the stairs.

Pérez Galdós writes in the realist tradition of Balzac, depicting human nature and behavior as he sees it. It is up to the reader to decide if Fortunata is a devil or an angel. The author is transparent and non-judgmental, providing physical description and letting his characters' thoughts and speech convey feelings and ideas. This does make for some long and relatively uneventful passages, and there are some prolonged and not indispensable side trips into the affairs of some lesser characters. In the end, though, Fortunata and Jacinta is a rewarding novel, not as great as, but similar in many ways to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.

The best Spanish novel after "Don Quijote"

Don Benito Perez Galdos is the most important novelist of the Spanish language, right after Cervantes.
This is his masterpiece. Galdos has many great works, but this one has all the ingredients that you may find in his other smaller works.
It is a huge work, the size of "War and Peace" or "Middlemarch", but it reads like a short story. I remember reading it during my college time, and not being able to put the book down, getting late too often to appointments, or just daydreaming trying to picture the streets of Madrid in the 19th century, the faces of the two leading ladies...
Absolutly wonderful. A must read for anyone interested in high quality literature of any language. If you speak Spanish and you still haven't read "Fortunata y Jacinta" this must be your top priority.
You will not regret it.

An important addition to the literature of war. My highest recommendation

As horrific, ill-planned and misguided as the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may have been, they have, in spite of themselves, yielded a bumper crop of beautifully written books. Two such books, both memoirs from combat veterans, that immediately come to mind are Benjamin Busch's Dust to Dust: A Memoir and Brian Castner's The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life That Follows. To those books I will now add Brian Turner's moving memoir, MY LIFE AS A FOREIGN COUNTRY.

Busch's book moved effortlessly between memories of his combat experiences in Iraq and his childhood. Ironically, of the latter time, the former Marine begins his narrative with, "I was not allowed to have a gun." Later he tells us, "There is something to be said about being dust. It is where we are all headed." There is a telling matter-of-factness in Busch's treatment of death and its inevitability.

Castner, haunted by his harrowing experiences as a bomb disposal specialist with the Air Force, tells us calmly from the outset: "The first thing you should know about me is that I'm crazy."

In his own memoir, Turner tells us: "Sgt. Turner is dead." And he thinks of himself, alternately, as a drone and its operator-pilot, flying over hostile territory, photo-mapping and gathering intelligence.

Death, insanity, and, again, death. These are hardly surprising themes in books that deal with war and its aftermath. Like Busch and Castner before him, Turner maps the landscape of war, both external and internal, assesses the damage, and meditates on its consequences. Words are his medium.

Brian Turner has already published two critically acclaimed volumes of war poetry, Here, Bullet and Phantom Noise. This time using prose, he continues to try to understand what he did in war, and what it did to him. He also tries to put his army service (seven years) into the larger context of a family with a military tradition, giving us graphic glimpses of a father who flew intelligence-gathering missions during the Cold War, an uncle who fought in Vietnam, a grandfather who fought with the Marines in the South Pacific during WWII, and others, all the way back to the Civil War. Struggling to explain, he says -

"I signed the paper and joined the infantry for reasons I won't tell you, and for reasons I will." And then, after listing possible reasons, he concludes, "I joined the infantry because I knew, even then, that most of what I've just said is total bulls**t, or that it really won't answer a thing."

But regardless of why he joined, Turner still struggles with what he saw and what he did during his tour in and around Mosul, Iraq. Things like manning a turret gun on convoy duty and firing at civilian cars that came too close or tried to force their way into the column. Or setting up a security perimeter around an Iraqi police station.

"This is where sixteen Iraqi policemen stood on the sidewalk in one moment, vanished in the next. A forearm still attached to a hand, a wedding band shining on a finger. Dust. A strange and momentary silence ... There is a mustache, alone, on a sidewalk."

Home on leave, Turner feels ashamed at feeling so relieved to be in America, safe, and thinks himself a coward for such feelings. And after his discharge he travels, to numerous foreign countries, many of them scenes of wars, still looking for answers. Even in bed with his wife, he is plagued by hallucinatory nightmares of the war and its victims.

"My wife and I make love in sheets the color of rare wine. As we kiss and roll over in bed ... a nurse wheels a shallow-breathing veteran into our bedroom - a man with pellets from a shotgun lodged in his brain, the surgeons following behind and standing over his gurney, whispering how they might proceed ... And they wait for us to finish making love ... The surgeons whispering over their critical patients. The dead in their bathtubs. The dead with their mouths given to foam. The dead strung from ropes under cones of light."

Death and insanity - constants of war. In that eerie opening image - dreaming of himself as a drone, Turner says -

"Each night I do this ... I bank and turn, gathering circuit by circuit the necessary intelligence, all that I have done, all that we have done ..."

"All that we have done" indeed. And yet the wars go on and on. Brian Turner's MY LIFE AS A FOREIGN COUNTRY is an important addition to the literature of war, bleakly beautiful and profoundly disturbing. I give it my highest recommendation.

Death, Waste, Sorrow, Beauty

I’ve never been to war, nor have any of my family, after the generation of my father and uncles. The country I live in has never been occupied, other than by a brief stint of Japan in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. I’ve always been grateful for that good fortune, but in an abstract way, until Brian Turner brought war home to me in My Life as a Foreign Country.

Turner calls his book a memoir but it takes that genre into a whole new territory. He is a poet and that burnished and economical use of language is what shapes his narrative. It’s a song, a meditation, a violent introspection, a reporting of stories that are close to unbearable. That’s what this man carries with him; that’s what every combat veteran has as his legacy of battle, and that’s My Life as a Foreign Country brings to us.

The universality of war, through place and time, is made clear through the terse 203-page volume, with stories of generations of soldiers in Turner’s own family, and in Cambodia, England, Bosnia, Antietam, Guam, Saigon, and Iraq. He shows a multitude of people of all ages, who carry a world of war in their heads, a world that is untranslatable to the rest of us who have never been there. Then he uses art as a common language that will blow our comfortable universes wide open.

Tight portraits and essays and fragments of conversations that are frequently obscene, nightmares and dreams of love that is made on clean, domestic sheets, reenactments of acts of war told in the voice of a poet-warrior—Turner reaches back into the realm of classical epics to shape his modern counterpart.

“The soldiers enter the house, the soldiers enter the house.”

And in less than four pages, Turner takes his readers along on that entry, and he changes their lives with maybe as many as a thousand words. Nobody can read that 49th essay and ever look at a veteran or a “war movie,” or a television news clip of an occupied area in the same way ever again.

Standing with Brian Turner and his brigade at Fort Lewis, Washington, listening to a Colonel read the names of “those who did not come back,” realizing he omitted the name of “a young man from New Jersey who wrote poetry and wanted to become a lawyer one day,” who had sat in a Port-O-Let in Mosul and “put six rounds through the top of his skull,” you understand why a soldier in line suddenly “locked up his knees and passed out, instantly pissing his pants.” You see this New Jersey boy’s body with the other dead soldiers, “wind blowing through them, as through a flute.”

"How does anyone leave a war behind them, no matter what war it is, and somehow walk into the rest of his life?" Brian Turner’s reply to his own question echoes through his book, which should be read and reread by all of us who have been sheltered and have never paid the price for that.

The unanswerable question about war

This is a beautifully literate account of war, a narrative poem written by an American soldier with the same name as NZ poet Brian Turner.
I heard the American Turner interviewed by Wallace Chapman on Radio NZ's Sunday programme last weekend and Chapman later said the book was the best he'd read in a while.
A sound judgement.
Turner relates his mind-numbing experiences in Iraq to his family's long history of warriordom. It's visceral in its awfulness, a gruelling account of the fear, mindlessness, boredom, brutality and sheer ugliness of war.
The only question left at the end is why do men do this. It's an unanswerable one.
