This book really captured me...

This is a compelling read. Once into it, I couldn't put it down. The author's excellent descriptive style and detailed journaling drew me into his world and made it a very present and personal experience. I witnessed through his eyes the physical and mental brutality of life on a heavily bombed military base. And as his world crumbled, I shared the emotional chaos which followed. It was all at once touching and frightening, angering and, in the end, inspiring. At times, it made me cry.
This book is an incisive and deeply moving chronicle of the effects of war on the human mind and spirit and a poignant portrayal of one man's fall into the dark abyss of PTSD and his journey back to life. I enthusiastically endorse it to anyone interested in war stories, to anyone touched in some way by trauma and PTSD, to anyone who believes in the transcendence of the human spirit.

A Brutally Honest Window into Abstract History

If you've ever wondered what it is really like to be the "boots on the ground", this is your answer! It's all here from start to finish, the oddessy that deployment involves- all captured in remarkable detail and shared in a compelling, cohesive story. This book fills in the blanks about what it is really like to be sent halfway around the world to support a massive movement of troops, and the honesty that it is written with reveals many astounding details of how little was actually accomplished-despite damaging so many lives.
The author does an amazing job of opening his mind and heart, inviting the reader to experience the terrifying roller coaster of emotions he endured, from the crippling tedium of the unending logistical and bureaucratic misery, to the deadening relentless terror of being constantly barraged by enemy fire and having no control whatsoever of whether you live or die. The only thing that I can imagine would be worse is to be forced to endure all of this for a cause that you completely morally disagreed with, out of a sense of duty to your country and your unit- exactly as the author did. This book is a snapshot of a point in time in history that most people will never think much about, yet it is exactly the kind of vivid narrative that if more people understood the reality of, it would result in a better future as more people could draw on when the abstract word "war" is proposed as a solution. This book is a window into another reality, and it reveals a dark truth and shines a light where darkness has been allowed to remain for far too long.

I worked on this book with Scott, and it was one of my most rewarding experiences as an editor. Scott brought real heart and earnestness to this book, a determination to both inform the reader of what life was like in Iraq and to find meaning in himself after an experience that nearly undid him. When most people think of war, they think of bloody firefights and brief moments of terror, heroism, and sacrifice. But for most, war is not like that at all. For Scott, it was repairing helicopters in a poorly secured forward operating base, enduring the accumulating low-grade terror of enemy mortars randomly lobbed into the base at random intervals, knowing that every day held the possibility of an instantaneous, unavoidable, and seemingly pointless maiming or death.
Lines in the Sand is a story of loss, loss of loved ones, loss of trust, and loss of identity, even purpose. But it's much more than that as well. It's the story of a man reclaiming himself through great personal effort. In his expansive honesty, Scott brings to the reader a harrowing case study of a man pushed to the brink by PSTD, and an inspiring memoir of how a man can learn to live with himself in a world where everything he had believed in had turned to dust.
