Dr. Alan Hoenig is a professor of mathematics at the John Jay College of the City University of New York. He is the author of Chinese Characters and Eating Out in China. He lives in New York City.

Great BUT..

Just got the book and I can't say I'm too happy.
The font of the book core is about 10pt (NOT the intro, the actual content). The font for the related words (the list on the right hand side of the page) is about 5pt. (!!!), which means that it is virtually impossible to read the Chinese characters. It's ridiculous. A Chinese person would probably get a headache from squinting at those. This should be a concern, since 1) this is for learners and 2) traditional characters are used (which have a lot more strokes). When you look at the "Look Inside" feature of Amazon, scroll down to entry 41, click "Expanded View" and click the "Zoom+" ONCE, now try to read the stuff on the side (stop before you kiss the screen) and that's exactly what the book looks like when you hold it in your hands and what you'll be doing. And NO, I still can't make out all the strokes on screen OR on the book (I'm using a MacBook Pro 13" screen, I normally LIKE small fonts, and I don't need glasses to read). It's a joke. PLEASE (author/publisher), double the size (thickness would be best) of the book! The material is great, but the presentation is not. The font size used in the FIRST edition was great.
Otherwise, the book/approach/etc. is great. I recommend buying the book, but I'm definitely buying the order edition too. NOT the RIGHT way to do business, though!

Traditional characters? 2,000? A must !

I am using the memory technique of this book: - and learning how it helps, removing the intimidating obstacles of learning chinese language ! Very, very smart in a simple way:- few sentences make one remember easily characters considered difficult. Forever. Thats is mnemonic!
For consult or reading, this terrific material is a must for beginners or to advanced students. Besides de traditional ideograms it shows how is the simplified forms too! With an english-chinese and chinese-english glossary. Plus the radicals, plus the 'how to draw' each character! Plus several sentences using the new ideograph, plus Pinyin to help the pronunciation in chinese. - I repeat: this is really a must.

Remember Chinese Characters by learning how they go together

This book owes a lot to the methods proposed by Heisig in Learning the Kanji, later converted to Learning the Hanzi. However, the stories are less involved and the learning is therefore quicker but more superficial. I got this because I had started to read Chinese poetry in the original (with facing translation, obviously). If you want a more thorough treatment, you should go for Heisig. But if you're going to be putting what you're learning into practice right away so you get reinforcement from actual reading, this is a nice offering. Also very nice: the accompanying web site has some downloads to make flashcards and to practice reading short phrases as you learn the characters.
