Great Book

Out of any guitar teaching books I own, this one is my favorite. It is a larger type book with big plastic loop bindings. This makes open placement much easier. The music scales or graphics are very easy to read and the book is presented in a logical manner. This book also comes with 3 CD's which are named Book 1, Book 2 and Book 3. Very easy to use and follow. 5 stars.

After doing some reaserch on good guitar books I found this one and bought it. I've been playing the guitar on and off for about 6 years but never really took the time to learn the craft and the instrument I just looked for the tab of my favorite songs and played that. But now after years of frustration and not really knowing how to play I've decided to buy a couple of books (this one, music theory for guitarist and fretboard mastery) and start really learning how to play the guitar. Even tho as a beginner I took some lessons with 3 different teachers, this book has taught me more than all of them combined. This book is awsome for any guitarist looking to learn the fundamentals and basics. I belive it's very important to have a good base of knowledge as a musician to be able to acomplish anything you want in music. This book gives you that and more!

It may not be for everyone but it is for me

After spending a good amount of money on one-on-one guitar lesson with professional guitarists, I've gotten nowhere. It's none of any of my former teachers' fault. It's just being 47 years old with a full-time job and and another full-time job raising a family with 3 young kids leave me with little time and energy for little else for myself, and that made it more challenging to learn how to play a musical instrument. I recently got this book and its CD's, after helping my oldest daughter with her viola practices using a CD to accompany her playing along with a book. All I can say is that it was at $15 well-spent. One thing I must say though - if you don't want to practice, then no matter how much you spend, it ain't gonna help you learn or play better. The accompaniments on the CD's will make you sound better than you can really play, and that will motivate you to practice even more. Honestly, it does make me want to "grab my guitar and play it all night long."

About the Author
Dr. JoAnn (Jodi) Crandall is Professor Emerita and former Director of the Language, Literacy and Culture Ph.D. Program, and Co-Director of the MA TESOL Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She has worked in all areas of ESL/EFL including teaching, curriculum and materials development, standards development, and teacher training.

Kearney is Professor of Government Emeritus at Western Kentucky University. He received his Ph.D. from The American University.

Both solutions are bad, states Zizek. They merely prolong the problem, rather than tackling it.

The refugee crisis also presents an opportunity, a unique chance for Europe to redefine itself: but, if we are to do so, we have to start raising unpleasant and difficult questions. We must also acknowledge that large migrations are our future: only then can we commit to a carefully prepared process of change, one founded not on a community that see the excluded as a threat, but one that takes as its basis the shared substance of our social being.

The only way, in other words, to get to the heart of one of the greatest issues confronting Europe today is to insist on the global solidarity of the exploited and oppressed. Maybe such solidarity is a utopia. But, warns Zizek, if we don't engage in it, then we are really lost. And we will deserve to be lost.

Outside the Academy

These two books neatly collected into one volume are written by a man who was a traditional academic but chose to work outside the academy and it is this that he discusses in these books. Trained as a historian Thompson takes a mythical view of history informed both by his own views and those of W.B. Yeats whose "A Vision" is interpreted here. To classify Thompson as simply "new age" would be to dismiss him too easily. While his work does fit at times with that nebulous genre he wrote these before that term was coined. This is a different take on history and on the academy. I regularly give copies of this one to my academic friends to keep them from getting stagnated by the university system. Essential reading.

A Must For Every Library

William Irwin Thompson is one of the truly great minds of our time. These two early works (which were originally published separately) are the perfect introduction to Thompson's opus. While some of the pop culture references may seem dated, passed over by events, the basic world view presented here remains valid.

Thompson, riding on the shoulders of such as Jean Gebser and Marshall McLuhan, illuminates the transitional period we are undergoing, as we move out of the modern era into ... whatever is coming -- we don't really know yet, but the so-called "postmodern" isn't the future, it's just a replay of isolated elements of the modern. Thompson sees signs of one possible future in the emerging planetary consciousness where thinking globally while acting locally is more than a pop phrase but a new way of perceiving our oneness with a sacred world. Thompson looks at signposts all over the planet which, taken individually might seems interesting, but taken together begin to form a picture that inspires either hope or dread, depending on your attachment to the prevailing consciousness. (You'll have to read his more recent books to get his take on capitalism's latest phase of globalization.)

I won't give any more away as I don't wish to spoil the intellectual feast that awaits the reader. I urge anyone interested in the history of ideas and in understanding the changes taking place in the world around us to read Thompson, starting with this publication. Then work your way through the rest of his books. It's a journey that can change your worldview and your life.

The Myths That Keep on Giving...

William Irwin Thompson is a cultural historian and one of the few writers who pay attention to the myths of humankind that wash within us, over us and through us in this strange epoch of existence we now find ourselves.

Thompson has written that we are like ants crawling across an oil painting: our limited consciousness can sense a series of changes and colors but it is only the poet, the mystic or the artist who is able to glimpse and describe the bigger picture. Thompson uses his nimble, eclectic intelligence to reveal the larger patterns of history that narrate and guide the complex unfolding of human existence in context with both culture and cosmos.

We only see through a glass, darkly. And there is much more than meets the eye. To use another metaphor, the night sky we stare up into reveals the light from stars that left deep space aeons ago. We are truly living in a different universe than the one we can perceive.

Thompson takes the reader on a journey that connects cultural dots that we rarely acknowlege to illuminate our journey to and through the future of our human heritages, our civilizations and our species. This book of essays is no guru romp through the New Age, but a work of serious historical scholarship that is both readable and penetrating.

It is a mythic manual for the new world and can be read, enjoyed and marveled at again and again.

Great Tips

I’m a writer and I started this kind of career three years ago. However, I only focused on writing general articles. There’s a rising demand on “copywriting jobs” and I tend to fail them or give up doing them because I can’t really write a good one. I tried looking for ways, but the internet is so big, that it really gets me overwhelmed, I don’t know which one I should choose. So, I considered this book, took my time reading it and it worked wonders. I tried to apply for a copywriting job offer and I’m glad I made it! I was hired and I’m doing a great job (according to my manager). This book honed me to become one!

A great book for those wanting to explore the depths of copywriting

I really learned a lot with this book. There are so many examples of excellent material used in the past and present, as well as some major mistakes companies have made in copywriting. The examples show details of what is good and bad about the advertisements, as well as the techniques you have to think about. From studying your competitor's products, to motivating buyers to use your product above all others, this book is an excellent source of information.

Useful book for professional writers.

I’m a professional writer and I do various types of writing jobs on Upwork. I was looking for a way to improve my writing skill and perhaps learn a new skill of writing. This book is about copywriting and its many aspects. After reading this book, now I know how to become a successful copywriter. This book has guided me in the complex way of becoming a copywriter. But, still the book did what it promised.
Now, I’ll be able to start doing copywriting works. Thanks to the author.
I would recommend any professional writer to read this book to shine his/her writing skills even more.
