THE GREAT HUNGER is the definitive history of the Irish Potato Famine of 1845-1849. When the Englishwoman Cecil Woodham-Smith published this book in 1962 she was vilified and branded a Communist by the British establishment which had spent the previous 120 years explaining away what is undoubtedly the greatest European famine since antiquity. Estimates of the dead are difficult to quantify. Conservative historians put the number at 1-2 million; others place it closer to 6,000,000. At least another 1.5 million Irish fled their homeland.

Like most disasters, "An Gortha Mor" seems both inevitable and avoidable in retrospect. The Irish population exploded in the first half of the 19th century reaching an official 8.2 million (and an unofficial ten million) just before the Famine. But unlike Britain, which had become heavily industrialized and was moving confidently into the modern and scientific Victorian Era, Ireland was sunk in a morass of poverty and dejection. The average Irish countryman led a life no better than the poorest serfs of Imperial Russia of the day, and the Irish were subject to all manner of legal restrictions, mass unemployment, subsistence agriculture, exploitation by landlords, and eviction at whim from the land and their homes, often just a rude mud cabin. With no education, and few skills other than potato farming, eviction meant almost certain death for husbands, wives and children. Often, they were driven even from the bogs where they'd found shelter after being put out.

The Blight, too, meant certain death for far too many. Eating nothing but potatoes and buttermilk, these most wretched people literally had nothing at all to sustain them after the crop turned into a glutinous, stinking mass of black rot. They died in droves, particularly in the poor west of Ireland, bleak and rocky Connaught. The typhus which followed killed more.

As hideous as all this seems, Cecil Woodham-Smith tells us that the Blight was only one factor in the disaster that overtook the Irish. More insidious was the attitude of the British administration which largely stayed hardset in its laissez-faire attitude, refusing to step in and feed the Irish, refusing to interfere with the free market economy of the day, and worst of all, refusing to grasp that the market economy only works when people have money or skills to trade for products and services. In 1845, Ireland was still a pre-capitalist economy, and the mercantile approach of the British simply could not be applied there; still, the British tried, and blamed their own failure to address the Famine on their convenient perceptions of Irish intransigence and laziness.

Sir Charles Edward Trevelyan may be one of the most hated figures in Ireland even to this day. Effectively the head of British efforts at Famine Relief, Trevelyan was unenamored of the Irish, he was a rock-ribbed capitalist, and, though moral and moralistic to a fault, was also just as singleminded, blind to the suffering of the populace, but fixed on promoting Irish efforts at self-help. He bought a parsimonious 100,000 Pounds Sterling worth of unmilled American corn, and doled it out to provide for the eight million Irish. Amazingly, Trevelyan kept food EXPORTS flowing out of the country at pre-Famine levels throughout (!) Nothing could interfere with trade.

A disciple of the philosopher Thomas Malthus, Trevelyan cast a cold and dispassionate eye over Ireland's circumstances, seeing them as a form of natural population control. At the same time, the British placed the country under virtual martial law, decreeing "seven long years Transportation way on down to Van Diemen's Land" (Tasmania) for minor infractions and acts of desperation (such as stealing corn).

Was this, as many have posited, an organized genocide? Certainly, there were those among the British who despised the Irish to that extent. On the other hand, if this had been an organized killing field, then why did the British do anything at all to help the Irish, little as it was?

Woodham-Smith's tales of people living in bogs, of coffinless mass funerals, of fever patients being abandoned by their terrified relations, of Ireland starving to death, cannot help but touch the reader. The British are presented as less calculating than more stupid, unable to adjust their thought processes to meet the crisis. Conditions were so awful and the Irish were so reduced and brutalized, forced to filthiness, criminal desperation and hair-trigger violence that when the Irish left Ireland (on rotten-bottomed Coffin Ships, like as not), their arrival in American and Canadian ports can be summed up shortly: NO IRISH NEED APPLY. "Paddy Wagons" were so named because they carried Irish miscreants almost exclusively for a time. Miraculously, the Irish rose, and rose all the way to the U.S. Presidency in just three generations.

More than just a history of the Potato Famine, THE GREAT HUNGER is an indictment of the too-common human propensities of blaming the victim, making gestures instead of taking action, and that of ultimately doing nothing. The truth behind every human tragedy can be found in the pages of THE GREAT HUNGER.

Excellent scholarly account

Cecil Woodham-Smith's judicious account of the potato famine in Ireland contrasts sharply with the angry tone of Thomas Gallagher's Paddy's Lament. Nevertheless, the two books complement each other very well. Although Woodham-Smith does not neglect the suffering of the Irish people, the main focus of her book is on the British government's response to the famine. She shows how the British administration was constrained by a narrow laissez-faire ideology and an inadequate administrative structure in Ireland, especially in the remote western counties. Although she never oversimplifies, Woodham-Smith patiently compiles a devastating indictment of British policy in Ireland. The main strength of Gallagher's book is his vivid description of life during the famine. He occasionally drifts into fictional methods in order to make his story more personal and immediate. Woodham-Smith is the better historian, but Gallagher packs a larger emotional punch.

The reason why atrocities happen

How equipped are our governments to deal with emergencies? Supposing a worldwide epidemic, which many scientists forecast, or even a tornado, were to strike, would there be an effective support system with adequate funds to spring immediately into action? Do we want this to happen? Have we learnt anything from the past?

Cecil Woodham-Smith wrote a book in 1962 called The Great Hunger which implicitly asks these question. She had shown how slow the British Government was to learn from the mistakes made in the Irish famine in her book The Reason Why (1953), which details how administrative failure and ignorant leadership were able to destroy the British Army in the Crimea in the 1850s without the Russians having much to do with it. In The Great Hunger Woodham-Smith shows how doctrinaire adherence to laissez faire economic theory, ignorance of conditions in Ireland, hatred of the Irish and unchecked colonialism applied to what was officially part of Britain led to the deaths of more than four million men, women and children in Ireland, and the emigration of two or three million more, many of whom died on their journey, in the period 1845-49. (A note about figures: everything is ambiguous, none more so than statistics. A census of Ireland in the nineteenth century was impossible. Many districts could not be reached because of inadequate roads. The poor were often not counted. During the famine records could not be kept because of administrative breakdown. It is not known accurately what the population of Ireland was at the time of the famine, nor is it known how many died. Stick to official estimates if you want to downplay the tragedy, double those figures if you want to exaggerate it).

It started with bad weather, unseasonably damp and humid, the perfect conditions for the newly arrived potato blight to spread. A simple crop to grow, in Ireland the potato had become the staple food of the nation and was at the mercy of the weather: there had been regular 'shortages' for many years, during which the people went without. Now in 1846 the fungus phytophthora infestans, hitherto unknown in Europe, completely destroyed the Irish potato crop. The bulk of Ireland's conservatively estimated 8 million people (possibly as high as 12-14 million as the western counties were never adumbrated effectively) had no food of any kind. This was just the beginning.

The whole of Europe was affected by an economic recess; food supplies were short across the continent and none available to help Ireland in her hour of need. Following starvation came fever, typhus and others. There was no effective way of dealing with widespread sickness in Ireland, and thousands and then millions died untreated and in some cases unburied. The humid summer was followed by one of the coldest winters on record, and people who had had to sell their clothes to feed their children died of exposure. Complete poverty meant that the Irish had no funds to buy seed for the following spring, widespread lack of education meant they had no knowledge of other crops or efficient cropping methods. In 1847 the weather was good and the crop of potatoes healthy, but only a tiny fraction of what it needed to be to feed the people. Then in 1848 the blight returned, destroying the entire crop for that year.

Ironically, Ireland is a fertile country. During the famine, farm produce which might have fed most of the starving was leaving Ireland for England in a steady stream. As Woodham-Smith explains, this anomaly had its roots in the system of land tenure, which goes back to Elizabethan times. Elizabeth I, Cromwell and many other British leaders followed a policy of dispossessing Irish nobility and awarding their lands to their own followers. Ireland was a plundered country, with no thought taken to integrate it with the rest of the nation or build its economy. Over the centuries the estates were broken down to smaller lots, but the revenues from them were spent in England by absentee landlords. Many of these became impoverished but remained improvident. Soon the only way to attract investment for produce was to sell competitively in foreign markets, hoping to squeeze income for establishments in Britain from the proceeds. Nobody worried about the Irish. They grew the food and sold it to pay their rents. They ate potatoes and lived in hovels. Nobody asked about crop failure.

The key figure in the way the Irish famine was dealt with in Britain was Charles Trevelyan, permanent head of Treasury. Others were Charles Wood, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Lord John Russell, Prime Minister. These men could be said to be responsible for what has been described emotively as genocide in Ireland. Of course they did not create the problem, which had existed for centuries and was a condition of England's conquest of Ireland: it was a powder keg awaiting someone to throw a match.

Trevelyan's contribution was to ignore the problem. Though there was a food shortage throughout Europe in the mid 40s, no planning or forecasts were made for the fragile economy of Ireland. Though the system of poor relief had been shown over many years to be underresourced and impossible to operate, reliance was made on it in the crisis. Throughout the famine Trevelyan was reluctant to send aid to Ireland because that would prohibit market forces from operating and be destructive for the economy (a doctrine of laissez faire Trevelyan rigidly adhered to, as did the government of which he was a part). The fact there was no market, and no economy after 1846, was ignored, along with the stream of reports which detailed the breakdowns in every system of administration in the country. If there was a problem in Ireland, Trevelyan thought, it was the fault of the Irish people, and it was up to them to fix it. The fact that Britain governed Ireland was effectively ignored in the process. Trevelyan was a true bureaucrat, and dealt with many problems merely by calling for further reports on them.

Through convoluted reasoning Trevelyan thought the people responsible for the mass of starving Irish were the landlords, who refused to fund relief funds. He caused rates to be levied, which the bankrupt landlords couldn't pay, and their response was to clear the land, evicting tenants by police and military aid and demolishing their dwellings. The starving were thus forced on the parish and the poorhouses, which were also bankrupt and unable to cope with millions of new applicants for assistance. The British government did provide some slight assistance for poor relief, but as they thought that too was the responsibility of the landlords, they eventually withdrew it. The problem passed from hand to hand, and people died.

Perhaps this is one way tragedies happen. People who don't know what to do do nothing, and ask, What problem? There's no problem!

One of the saddest stories in Woodham-Smith's book is that of the nationalists, the Repeal Association, the Young Ireland party and the revolutionary group lead by Fintan Lalor. With the passing of the great Daniel O'Connell the nationalist movement in Ireland was in the hands of leaders who knew less about the condition of the Irish than the British did. Breathing fiery rhetoric about driving the despoiling English from the land, they strove to organise forces of rebellion from starving men who only gathered in dozens, and mainly for food. But the British, which meant effectively Trevelyan, used this so-called rebellion as a further reason for withholding aid.

Woodham-Smith's book has been criticised as simplifying the problem, and as anti-British. The same complaints have been made against her masterpiece The Reason Why. The Great Hunger tries to be objective. Woodham-Smith uses statistics a lot, refrains from judgmental remarks, quotes from a wide range of existing sources. But she does have a prejudice, against the entropy in large organisations and the tragedies they inflict. She says emigration to Australia was negligible (over one million came to Australia from Ireland), that this was because of the expense of the passage (there were several systems of assisted passage) and that there was no network of Irish to welcome them if they did arrive (there were many earlier Irish migrants, not to mention the convicts) so her information on Australia is deficient. Otherwise her uses of source material is impressive.

Inappropriate administrative procedures, rigid adherence to beliefs inapplicable to the situation encountered, racial prejudice, refusal to see problems arising or deal with them when they arrive ' these methods kill as effectively as the gas chamber. Malthusian economists even forecast the deaths of millions of Irish people and saw it as a reasonable solution to the problem of overpopulation.

Today the world's population is approaching seven billion. Crises involving millions of people are more likely to happen now than they were in 1845 in Ireland. Have the responses we are likely to make learnt from the past?

About the Author
Image archivist Phil Szostak was embedded with The Force Awakens art department as a conceptual researcher and archivist from December 2012 through the end of production, and has worked in conjunction with Star Wars art departments for six years at Lucasfilm. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, Szostak worked for Wild Brain Animation on the Disney Channel series Higglytown Heroes, and he ran the JAK Films Art Department on Skywalker Ranch for over three years before joining the narrative design team on LucasArts' Star Wars: 1313. He resides in San Francisco. 

Production designer Rick Carter has won two Academy Awards®: One for his design of Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, and one for his otherworldly production design on James Cameron’s mega-hit Avatar. Carter received his first Oscar nomination for his work on Robert Zemeckis’s Forrest Gump, and an additional nomination for Steve Spielberg’s historic epic War Horse. Carter served as co-production designer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and is currently collaborating with Steven Spielberg on The BFG. He lives in Los Angeles.

The force is strong with this one

This is an amazing art book that would please any star wars fan. Its loaded with content and the pictures look beautiful and cover lots of different things from the new movie. Throughout the book there are brief comments talking about the art teams journey designing everything as well as comments on some of the pictures. Also the book is laid out in a timeline format so that as you go through the book you get to see how the art team was progressing and when they made everything (For example on page 20 in the top left corner it says January 2013 and then on page 54 its dated April 2013). Also each picture has a title and the artists name next to it. The book itself is very nicely made. The slipcover has some great art on both the front and back and the book itself has a nice and thick hardcover featuring the Millennium Falcon. The contents are:

Foreword- is 4 pages and basically just talks about the book and the new movie and what they hoped to achieve with it.

Introduction- is 2 pages and just talks about how they had to make the new film just as good if not better than the previous films and a few things they wanted to do with the new film.

Whos Who- This is 2 pages and lists the names of all the artists and designers.

"Guided Imagery" Concept Phase- This is 70 pages and is just the art and designers throwing out sketches and art that they might later use. You get to see some ideas of how Rey, Finn and other new characters might look as well as a weird version of the AT-AT. There are revisions of Han Solo and Princess Leia, lots of battle scenes and beautiful scenery. There are vehicle concepts, some new storm trooper ideas, lots of different characters, the new Death Star, Junk Yards of ships and stuff, Sith lords, New space ships, and just lots more. The art is quite detailed and looks awesome.

Pre Production- Is 102 pages and is where they finally got certain things approved by J. J. Abrams like hangers, and troop transports. There's even a picture showing exactly how they get out of tie Fighters (I will post a picture of this for you). Like the rest of the book the art is stunning and captures the Star Wars Universe perfectly. You get to see sketches, blueprints, models, lots of concept art and artwork. There's lots of locations, fallen walkers, burning tie fighters, loads of characters and vehicles, and so much more.

Production- Is 52 pages and is art that shows various scenes from the movie. Also the commentary here talks about the production and things such as Harrison Ford getting hurt and other things about making the film. One of my favorite pictures is the X-wings flying right above the water and waters flying everywhere (I'll post a picture).

Post Production- Is 6 pages and I guess is art that they might use for the next movie which according to this book is called Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One which is set for release in December of 2016 (I'll post a picture proving this).

"Who is Luke Skywalker?" Is only a page and talks about the force.

Overall this book was loaded with content and really is an excellent companion to the new film. The art was very nice and covered a lot from the Star Wars universe. Its just really cool to see various versions of things and how they look compared to the final result as well as see the progress the art team made. This was definitely worth every penny and if you or someone you know is a Star Wars fan then get this you wont be disappointed.

Great but a bit different from other Star Wars artbooks

[[VIDEOID:7fcb7680babe33ef50d8958493d660ee]]Wow. This artbook is better than I expected, but it's also a bit different than the ones for Episodes I, II and III.

The content is interestingly arranged in chronologically in order of the film production, so you can follow along as the art and concepts are developed from January 2013 to January 2015. You'll be able to see the early concepts for Rey and Finn who in the beginning are drawn like they are for some teen movie, and then much later on when it makes more sense to cover up Rey in survival gear-like clothing.

So there's no specific section on character designs, environments or vehicles. Everything is just mixed together as and when they were being developed. It's an interesting approach that I'm not sure if it's good or bad.

The artworks are fantastic. Most of them are of scene paintings and environments. And these would be the highlight of the book. They are very detailed and beautiful. I think they capture the mood of the film well and the worlds created look really believable and beautiful. One good thing is the artworks feel like they are from Star Wars and not some first-person-shooter sci-fi video game. There's also insightful commentary from the art department.

I'm surprised there aren't more character and creature designs though. For example, you won't get to see the different variations of suits for Poe, Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren or other characters for that matter. Most characters and aliens when they do appear are in the scene paintings. Maybe more will be included in the making-of book.

If you want to learn more about the characters, then get Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary. Or for vehicles, get Star Wars: The Force Awakens Incredible Cross-Sections. This artbook together with the two other books will make for a complete visual collection.

And because the book's arranged in chronological order by film production and not the storyline, it can be difficult to locate the information that you want. For example, Rey's art is scattered throughout. Overall, it's not a big deal, at least to me.

As a 256-page hardcover artbook, it's really worth the money. Highly recommended for the fans.

The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens

[[VIDEOID:3c263b00b5485e374a58a9d55c1b7dcc]]“The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is a fantastic journey through the galaxy far, far away, along with its characters, creatures, vehicles, weapons, and planets. There are quite a few books about Star Wars: The Force Awakens being released - and this is the best of them if you are interested in the artistic side of Star Wars (or movies in general).

I won’t spoil anything specific - I’ll just say that you’ll probably want to save this book until after you’ve seen the film, because the book includes designs (both conceptual and finished) for certain characters and locations that are better kept a mystery until you’ve experienced the movie.

If you enjoyed the film, you will be pleased to know that this book offers the reader insight into the detailed art direction and production design that went into creating “The Force Awakens”. Star Wars has always used the image to convey thematic ideas; and the level of imagination and creativity that goes into them is arguably greater than any other film franchise.

Among the imagery in the book are early and unused concept sketches, storyboards, paintings, and even blueprints. The images are printed in high resolution so you can inspect every detail. Although this is primarily a book of art, the author has done a nice job writing text that compliments the imagery and enhances the experience of the book. Included are quotes from key creatives that worked on the project.

On the whole, the book has a nice layout; while most books group the artwork by character or the film chronology, this book does things a bit differently. The art is instead published essentially in the order it was created, beginning with the earliest concept ideas in late 2012 and ending with some post-production design changes in January 2015. So as the reader flips through the book they can see the evolution of the film's designs take place.

This has instantly become one of my favorite movie art books. If you liked the movie and want to know more about the designs from concept to completion, you will enjoy the book. This would make a great gift for the Star Wars fan.

About the Author
The Rev. Father Joseph Simler was a priest and author of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition to serving as Superior General for the Society of Mary, he also released a Catechism of Mental Prayer, which received a third edition in 1911 through the Brothers of Mary. Father Simler's work is a concise and easily-readable book that explains in detail what is involved with mental prayer, also known as meditation. It was printed by TAN in 2010 with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur.

Improved my prayer life

As a Protestant, I practiced mental prayer for most of my life, but without direction or form. It was the richness of Catholic prayer that first attracted me to the Catholic Church. This booklet clearly defines the different types of prayer, and in detail lays out a form for fruitful mental prayer. I use the prayers for beginning and ending my time of prayer (found in the back of the booklet) every day, though I now know them well enough that I pretty much paraphrase them in my own words. I am recommending it to some of my Carmelite friends because I have found it so helpful for myself.

Excellent Q&A on Mental Prayer

The Catechism of Mental Prayer is the size of a small devotional prayer book. The first part of the book is the catechism section which presents the topic of Mental Prayer in the form of a FAQ or Q&A. I have read rather large books on Mental Prayer like The Ways of Mental Prayer(which I would highly recommend), and have seen mental prayer treated in a variety of different books on the spiritual life. The Catechism of Mental Prayer still taught me a few new things (or reminded me of them if I forgot them) and I enjoyed how aspects of mental prayer I already understood were put into succinct simple statements.

The second part the book includes prayers to make in preparation before and after mental prayer, various subjects to meditate on, suggestions for various invocations, an examination of conscience to evaluate how well one has made their mental prayer, and a brief section of practical remarks. Putting these tools them into such a small book that can be put in a pocket makes for great convenience when making mental prayer away from home.

This is an excellent book to get your feet wet, and also has some information for someone who is experienced at mental prayer.

A Refreshing and Uplifting View of the Human Person

Catechism of Mental Prayer, by the Very Reverend Joseph Simler.

This very small book has been in print for over 100 years. Organized like the Baltimore Catechism as Question and Answer, it takes the reader through everything necessary to practice what Catholics refer to as Mental Prayer.

Simler has separate chapters on Preparation for Mental Prayer, the Body of Mental Prayer, and the Conclusion. He offers guidance and advice for each stage, reflecting on the use of the human faculties of will, affection, and imagination during Mental Prayer.

Father Simler guides us, with clarity and precision, through layers of understanding regarding the practice of Mental Prayer. He cautions us on possible difficulties in this form of prayer and ways to counter those difficulties. He reassures us that anyone can master Mental Prayer, to the benefit of his spiritual life.

I love this book. I love how direct Father Simler is. I love how he has taken a spiritual practice of great saints and made it accessible to anyone. I love how unapologetically Catholic he is, how completely unaffected by the New Age zeitgeist (the book is, after all, 100+ years old) his advice is. I wish I could convey just how refreshing his view of the human person is, unfettered by psychobabble and crippling and condescending false compassion.

Although Father Simler makes reference to confessors, particular Catholic oral prayers, and Orders (I suspect the first audiences for this book were members of religious orders), I recommend this tiny book on mental Prayer any Christian.

Generally a good book

This book has a lot of basic stuff in it. It is rather easy to read and simplistic. It is a good introductory kinetics book, but be prepared to take advantage of other resources in order to accomplish your kinetics task. Not necessarily a great reference book for your graduate studies.

Kinetics for mature, sensible adults. Eye protection required.

As a medicinal chemist and enzymologist I found this book to be not to my taste. Very little attention is devoted to Michaelis Mentin and the steady state approximation. Nor is very much attention paid to the organic chemistry of the rate laws of organic reactions.

But I suppose this is necessary. This is a general text on kinetics and in that regard it is a very good one. For starters it's small, making it easy to carry. This compactness of size leads to a corollary compactness in language. It's brevity makes difficult concepts a little easier to understand because they aren't smothered in endless confusing verbiage and examples.

With the knowledge comprised here you should be prepared to utilize kinetics in almost all circumstances. However, for specific functions, such as enzymology, a more specific book on the subject is recommended.

Espenson's book is ok. It's a little difficult to read at times, but covers the basics fairly well. More references would be useful. A good introductory book.

Dr. Karine B. Blackett is a certified life coach whose professional credentials span more than 20 years of student success and career management experience.
