Anastasia Young is a designer, a jeweler, and an artist whose work has been exhibited around the world. She is the author of Jewelry Techniques: The Essential Guide to Choosing and Using Materials, Stones, and Settings and teaches at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London.

Thorough and carefully thought out addition to your library of jewelry textbooks

This is a new book by second time author Anastasia Young. Her website is located here: [...] . Her first book, Jewelry Techniques: The Essential Guide to Choosing and Using Materials, Stones and Settings, was a well received reference source.

The Workbench Guide is a high quality hardcover, 320 page text which a reader might like to consider adding to his or her permanent library of "how to" books. Packed with 400 photographs, 200 illustrations and 100 charts, it doesn't allow your mind to wander for a second as it guides you step by step through the five sections it is divided into. Whether purchased by a serious student of jewelry design and technique, or just by a passionate lover of jewelry who privately, safely teaches herself as much as she can, there is valuable knowledge to be found in this book.

I am not a believer of choosing one book as the "be all and end all" for any process of learning. I am well aware that there are fine books in existence already [ here are a few, for example ,
1. Jewelry: Fundamentals of Metalsmithing (Jewelry Crafts) by Tim McCreight
2,The Complete Jewelry Making Course: Principles, Practice and Techniques: A Beginner's Course for Aspiring Jewelry Makers by Jinx McGrath

There are many, many more ]. However it is a good idea to stir up new energy and insight by adding to older favorites, whether you are the teacher or the student. Artists create amazing new styles of jewelry all the time and some of them are exhibited in here. How to make them is explained, carefully.

Engraving, Chasing and repousse, Fusing, Riveting, Enameling (one of my favorite parts), Drilling, Piercing,
Cutting, Filing, Annealing, Soldering, Pickling, Wirework, Fold Forming, Bending Metal, Hammering, Carving, Mounting and setting stones, polishing, Stamping, Dappling/swaging, Forging, Anticlastic raging, Hydraulic press, Wax carving and modeling, and masses more.

The book's sections are as follows:
First there is a history of jewelry making. Then come the five sections, very clear and extremely helpful if you are searching out something specific.
Chapter 1: Work Space, Tools, and Materials
Chapter 2: Techniques
Chapter 3: Design
Chapter 4: Going Into Business
Chapter 5: Reference (for example, Directory of Gemstones,Conversions, Suppliers and more)

As I said, any one book is not sufficient to teach a reader every aspect of jewelry making, design , photography, selling, and more, no matter how good that book is. But if you are building yourself a solid library of jewelry technique books, I recommend this consistently fine addition: The Workbench Guide to Jewelry Techniques, by Anastasia Young. I think you will be happy to own it. It truly is quite successful as a text which attempts not to leave anything out!

The Workbook Guide To Jewelry Techniques.

A few months ago I purchased Complete Metalsmith: Professional Edition by Tim McCreight. As much as I love his book, I love this one even more.

This is a beautiful book with gorgeous photographs and a wealth of information. I've been a Silversmith for about 15 years and even I learned some new tricks and techniques.

This book, along with Tim McCreight's Complete Metalsmith is a must have for any metalsmith's library. But if I had to choose between one or the other, this is the one I would choose.

I'm a huge "How To Book" reader and most How To books fall short of what I'd like to see in them, but this one actually surprised me by giving me more than I expected.

This book has great step by step photos of jewelry making techniques. Could almost be used as a substitute to taking a silver jewelry making class. I'm still digesting this book, but it was worth the money. Certainly good for a beginner.

if your lab class doesn't assign an actual book this is great!

In my lab class they only had a lab book that was made by the dept. It was designed to be confusing and tricky. I'm training to be a CLS, this got me through the med back lab. Our professor would never tell us the "tricks" in med bact, for example when a bacteria was called a rod but when you looked in the scope it actually looked cocci. This was great for that. It also gives you a little box summary of all the tests important for each microbe. This was very helpful for the Enterbacteriaceae family. It has a great chart for X and V factors for Haemophilus spp. It is also great for telling you what tests separate what genera, like Neisseria, Moraxella, and Acinetobacter.

Good book: Just what I needed

Just what I needed for my Microbiology and Pathogenic class. It is also a very good book; easy to understand and has all the important information for identification and classification of microorganisms. This book does not have a chapter on cellular respiration which we did have to cover in class, but overall this book is easy to understand and very helpful.

Simple Kindness

This is a bound and published edition of Saunders' commencement speech at Syracuse University in 2013. You could certainly complain that it's not really a "book", that it was originally published in the New York Times, and that it is very brief.

But it's worth reading.

What advice do you give to graduating students? Often it's about how to succeed in the world -- e.g., find something you love to do and do it. And there have been memorable commencement speeches of that type. Some go beyond that, e.g., the speech that Steve Jobs gave to graduating Stanford students in 2005.

Saunders gives a very simple message -- be kind.

He asks himself what he regrets in his own life, from the vantage point of decades that the students he is talking to haven't experienced yet. And the thing that he identifies is his indifference toward a girl in his school when he was young. He wasn't mean to her, but he ignored her when she needed kindness.

I can certainly think of the missed opportunities in my life when I wasn't kind to someone -- it would have taken so little. My life won't be any the less for having missed that last jump shot in the final seconds of a basketball game. It will be less for having turned away from someone who I could have helped have a better life. Few of us can say that we've kept the right balance of self-interest and kindness.

I've read criticisms of Saunders' speech, that he ignores the material difficulties facing students who graduate from college today, with poor employment opportunities and often carrying heavy college loan debts on into their distant futures. I would imagine those things weigh more heavily on their minds than whether or not they are kind persons. But Saunders' message is one from a vantage point he knows is decidedly not that of his audience but one he feels they could profit from -- it is better to decide what matters in your life before you are looking back on it.

I'd give the book 5 stars for content, but I'm giving it 4 as a "product" -- the speech itself is (and should be) available for free in a number of places, including video. I bought the book because . . . well, I buy George Saunders' books. I do like the idea that others have mentioned, of giving the book as a gift.

On the importance of kindness

George Saunders is a professor of English at Syracuse University and a writer of short stories, essays, novellas and children's books. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker and Harper's, among other publications.

In 2013, Saunders delivered the convocation speech at Syracuse University for the class of 2013, and shared it with The New York Times where it was reprinted with his permission.

In April of 2014 the speech was published by Random House in this little book. Mr. Saunders argues that "as a goal in life, you could do worse than: Try to be kinder." He understands that we all have ambitions for fame, fortune and love but urges us as much as possible to: "err in the direction of kindness. Do those things that incline you toward the big questions, and avoid the things that would reduce you and make you trivial."

Although the entire graduation speech appears in The New York Times, the book is beautifully produced. The speech takes only about 15 minutes to read but each word carries weight and meaning. It is a speech to savor and re-read often. Although the speech is available online, I recommend buying the book. But in any event, the speech is absolutely worth reading.

This is not the Trilogy

I thought I was ordering the trilogy itself. Instead this was a review/critique of the trilogy. Thus I was disappointed. I hoped to find the trilogy in one volume. Apparently it is necessary to order each of the three novels individually. I reordered the Tin Drum and thus have had to pay twice to get what I really wanted

First: If you decide to tackle the Danzig Trilogy, Reddick's critical analysis is indispensable. I suggest tackling it the same way I did: read The Tin Drum, start Reddick's book at the same time you start Cat and Mouse (Reddick reads faster than Grass, and you'll get through a lot of Reddick while tackling Grass), and when you've caught up, read Reddick's section on Dog Years and the actual novel concurrently.

Those of you who feel the revelation of anything having to do with a book before you get to that part in the book is a spoiler should probably avoid this technique; Reddick reveals the major "mystery" in Dog Years towards the end of his section on Cat and Mouse. However, one cannot really consider Dog Years a mystery, despite the various things that happen within it; while there are some elements to it that keep the reader guessing, Dog Years is, more than anything, a savage satire on Germany during the WW2 years. And as such, finding out the main mystery-that's-not-a-mystery should not detract at all from one's appreciation of the book itself.

Dog Years can also stand on its own, without being read as a part of the Danzig Trilogy, but the reader's appreciation of many facets of this novel-- most notably Edouard Amsel's character and the satire itself--are more easily appreciated when you have The Tin Drum and Cat and Mouse under your belt as comparisons. Amsel, the main protagonist of Dog Years, stands as a direct comparison to both Oskar and Mahlke, and his character is more easily understood when those two have already been assimilated by the reader.

The plot of Dog Years is a simple enough one; it charts, through the use of three narrators, the friendship of Edouard Amsel and Walter Matern from grade school through their early thirties. Amsel, the intellectual one, is picked on constantly by his classmates (including Matern) until one day, for no apparent reason, Matern befriends Amsel and chases away the others. It's a typical buddy-relationship in that Amsel is the brains and Matern is the brawn, but we don't get the bonding we've come to expect from seeing too many Hollywood buddy films. The relationship between Matern and Amsel is far more complex than that, and Reddick has done a passable job of interpreting it, one which I won't attempt to recreate here (it would be ludicrous to attempt something that complex in such a forum as a review). In an odd lapse, though--especially given how much emphasis Reddick has put on Grass' enmity and satire of the Roman Catholic Church in the previous two books-- Reddick seems to have overlooked one of the most obvious interpretations of Amsel's character (and also that of the more minor protagonist Jenny Brunies), as a christ figure. In the novel's central scene, both Amsel and Brunies (who are both made out, in the first half of the novel, to be almost comically fat) undergo a transformation that transforms Brunies into a ballet sensation and Amsel into another character entirely, the omnipotent Goldmouth; while there is no physical crucifixion here, the path taken by Amsel's character through the rest of the novel certainly implies the path of christ after the resurrection, until his assumption into, in this case, Berlin. For the next hundred or so pages, Goldmouth is never actually seen, only referred to in the good deeds he does for others, and he achieves an almost legendary status among the rank and file for his goodness, his power (in postwar Germany, his power is in his connections; who he knows), and the fact that no one really sees him much, but everyone is aware of his presence and his acts. However, Reddick, in his attempt to (successfully) parallel Amsel's character with that of Grass himself, never examines this aspect of Amsel.

This lack also leads to Reddick drawing the conclusion that Dog Years is the weakest of the three books, while still proclaiming that as a whole they rank as the finest piece of modern German literature extant today. I feel Reddick is giving Dog Years short shrift here; while the book does, in fact, have its faults, they are faults shared by the other two novels as well, and I came away from Dog Years thinking that, to the contrary, it was the strongest and most absorbing of the three. While it was more difficult than the other two, it was also more rewarding and more absorbing; it's not often I'll put in three months on one novel, but at no time did I feel that it ever stopped moving me along, and at no time did I ever feel that it was time to put the book down for good.

Keeping this seeming oversight of Reddick's in mind, I still have to recommend his book as a perfect accompaniment to Grass' most famous three novels, and all four of them deserve the attention of every serious student of literature.

The Tin Drum

I can't say that it's the kind of book I read without putting down. It took me four years to read it in German, it was a project from which I learned more German, to like Gunther Grass and to look at midgets or short people in a different way. For me they now stand for Oskar, the main character of the book a boy who shatters windows and glasses of his teacher, makes the Nazis dance to the wrong tune, loves nurses and much more. It's a wonderful book. I recently read a list of the 50 favorite books of Germans. This one was number 48 for them. It's close to number one for me. It's a wonderful book -whether it takes you a week or 4 years.
