I'm a Raving Fan!

Kenneth Blanchard continues his trend of writing easy-to-read books with BIG ideas for making your business better. Raving Fans is a book of stories relating how fictional companies have created an environment of delivering awesome customer service. A guy that has just been put in a managment position requiring a turnaround goes on a fictional trip with his "angel" to visit businesses that have figured out their vision and their system to deliver customer service extraordinary. Based on three simple principles (Decide, Discover, Deliver), each company has created a group of Raving Fans (not just customers, but fans) who wouldn't consider shopping anywhere else for what one of these companies offers. Within each story is other nuggets of common sense and good ideas that can be implemented in any company that has customers and wants to create fans. We required our store managers to read the book and each created a list ranging from 20-40 points that they can put into effect at their stores to improve customer service. This is a simple, must-read for every business owner and manager.

Great for communicating customer service ideals to employees

I'm a dentist, and even though people think I have patients, they are also customers. I and my staff have to deliver exceptional service if I expect them to come back and refer their friends and family to me. The normal dental experience in this world is "well, he didn't hurt me too much." I want people to rave about their dental visits, not just tell the usual "horror stories"! This book has been used in my office as a reading assignment and the subject of staff meetings, in an attempt to comunicate to my staff and have them deliver service that exceeds the patient's expectations. The simple style it's told in really keeps their attention, since most people will not read the more detailed and lengthy books on the market that are similar in substance. Highly recommended for any business person--large or small!

About the Author

Dr. Edward G. Nawy is a distinguished professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He has been active in the ACI and PCI since 1959 and is internationally recognized for his extensive research work in the fields of reinforced and prestressed concrete, particularly in the areas of crack and deflection control. Dr. Nawy has published more than 175 papers in numerous technical journals worldwide. He is also the author of several books, including Prestressed Concrete: A Fundamental Approach, Fifth Edition (2006), published by Prentice Hall; Fundamentals of High Performance Concrete , Second Edition (2001), published by John Wiley and Sons; and Concrete Construction Engineering Handbook, Second Edition (2008), published by Taylor and Francis/CRC Press. He has been the recipient of several major awards, including the Henry L. Kennedy Award of the ACI, the ACI Concrete Research Council Award, the ACI Design Practice Award, honorary membership of the ACI, honorary professorship with the Nanjing Institute of Technology, and the emeritus honorary membership of the Transportation Research Board Committee on Concrete. Dr. Nawy is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, and Florida, Evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), Chartered Civil Engineer overseas, and has been a consultant in forensic engineering throughout the United States.

Buy a different book

This book exemplifies the the way a book should not be written. The examples, writing techniques and homework problems in this book are extremely difficient. Numerical mistakes seem to be everywhere in this book. The examples are far from real world application. Very little theory about reinforced concrete is in this book. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Book has far too many errors

This book has some useful information. However, like all of Dr. Nawy's books, it is very poorly written and contains far too many errors to be considered a useful text. For reinforced concrete, MacGregor (4th edition) is a much better investment. For prestressed concrete, try Collins & Mitchell.

This book portrays concrete design in a cookbook fashion with little emphisis on actually understanding the material. The explinations that are given are wordy and not clear. While this book might be considered a good refrence book, I would not recomend it for students.

Extremely well written and a great asset to any D7200 owner

I have been a hobbyist photographer for several years and although I mainly shoot in Aperture Priority and Manual Mode, I know there is still a lot I do not know about my camera and I'm always looking for opportunities to learn more about photography. This was my first DSLR Guide so I wasn't sure what to expect. First of all there are almost 500 pages of content! David has done a REALLY great job of providing a resource for both new and seasoned photographers alike. The book starts out with the very basics of the D7200 but quickly begins to cover in detail every single button, feature and menu item on the camera (which in itself is an incredible feat). David provides his suggested settings and throughout the book and even tells you why he recommends them. There are photos and examples on almost every page of the book that illustrate the feature or show where on the camera that particular feature is found. So far I'm 1/2 way finished with the book. I've already learned a lot from this book and am excited to finish the rest of the book and learn about the features and settings that I am not as familiar with. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any photographer!

The best book I could have purchased, prior to buying the Nikon D7200. Saved me MONEY!!!!!!!

I found this book to be the best purchase ever!!!! I determined what camera I was going to purchase first, then bought the book. I am a beginner when it comes to photography. I purchased a SLR digital camera several years ago and hated it. The quality of the pictures were terrible even using the automatic settings. I am hosting a German exchange student and decided I needed a new camera. I received the book and read most of the book and played very close attention to the section on recommended accessories that should be considered for purchase. The most important section to me was on lenses. I was able to determine the best starting lens for me was the AF-S DX ZOOM-NIKKOR F/3.5-5.6 G VR II. The book save me a lot of frustration, disappointment, and money by helping me make my decision on a lens before buying the camera. I was able to find a camera package that included this lens on Amazon from Cameta Camera.

The book is easy to read and understand for a beginner like me. I have also purchased the following books; David Busch's Compact Field Guide for the Nikon D7200 and David Busch's Mastering Digital SLR Photography, Fourth Edition.

Not only the best camera guide I've ever read, possible the best product guide I've ever read.

I don't actually enjoy writing reviews, which is why, out of the all-too-many items I buy on Amazon, I only come back to provide reviews when something is really bad, or really good. In the case of David Busch's D7200 book, it's the latter. Not only is this the best camera guide I have ever owned (and I started taking pictures in 1965), it is quite possibly one of the best product guide books I have ever owned. Logically arranged, clearly written, with just enough repetition (and no more) to keep you from flipping back and forth, this is a book I will be coming back to multiple times as I learn more about my D7200. One of my favorite features, beyond the simple clarity of his explanations of the many settings, is Busch's providing of recommendations for those settings, along with succinct rationales for his suggestions and advice on alternate choices. I also appreciate the careful editing: over the course of about 500 pages, I think I noted maybe 3 typos. Total. And if that doesn't impress you, you've never written an essay. ;-)

The motherload of Chekhov analysis

Any student having to write an essay on Anton Chekhov will hit jackpot and then some with this treasure trove. Though 13 years old, the analysis of Chekhov stories is priceless. It's a great guide in guiding people to a deeper understanding of Chekhov's stories and their themes. The author explains things in plain English.

Only gripe is the price. A hundred bucks for a book that's 13 years old? Come on! - Donna Di Giacomo

Great illustrated guide for older children

Not only a great childrens book but also one of the best books written by grandmaster Raymond Keene (who has written more than 100). He seems to have picked the eyes out of the best of his previous works and summarised them in an easy to understand guide that appeals to kids and adult beginners.

As the other reviewer says its many many illustrations are terrific and designed to catch the eye encouraging kids (and adults)to read on. Almost every page has at least one picture or chess board shot.

It starts with an interesting history of the game and ends with biographies of world champions, discussion of computer chess and resources for further learning about chess. In between it covers the basics of pieces and how they move, and has quite comprehensive sectiions on openings, the middlegame, and endgame/checkmates.

It goes into detail that is a welcome surprise for a childrens guide. For example he covers the "more difficult" checkmate by knight and bishop briefly in an easy to understand illustrated way when adult books on checkmate endings written by so called experts avoid discussing at all! So Ray Keene really know what he is talking about and explains it simply and well.

As well as the many illustrations, there are plenty of summary boxes, and quizzes with answers at each step of the book. There are also several complete classic games which are used to explain key concepts. This makes learning easy and it proceeds in simple steps from basic to progressively more complex concepts.

The edition I have is from the 1980s which you might think makes it out of date. But for a beginner to intermediate it is still one of the best books to learn from particularly for children. I rate this as a classic childrens chess book which will be hard to equal. (A worthy and up to date competitor is the Usborne Complete Internet Chess Book (see my review)). This book by Ray Keene is more suitable for older children as it is more wordy and goes into more detail for more difficult concepts (eg the bishop and knight checkmate mentioned above)

In short a great book. You may need to buy it second hand or search the net for a copy as it may not be readily available. But it will be well worth the effort to get it and enjoy every page.

Science Page-Turner, my Reality

I knew that reality is synthesized in my head but I had no idea that language can drive what I taste or that culture can determine how I express emotion. What? So language and culture shape my reality? That's one of my gems from the book. But you will likely find your own surprises. The book is a well researched guided tour of research labs, basements, and even bars, where scientists and others are puzzling about human perception and ways to augment perception. It's all nicely tied together with a story arc (that I won't reveal here). Oh, did I mention page-turner?

Everything you didn't know about your senses in one book

We Have the Technology is an rollicking, imminently readable tour of our senses. Platoni does an excellent job finding memorable characters to guide the reader through some of the tougher science and I often found myself staying up and hour or two later than I intended to finish another chapter.

I whole heartedly recommend this book for anybody interested in the world and how perceive it.
