A complete excavation is being carried out with the support of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos of Oman in the remote Bedouin village of Shisr and will take up to ten years. The author's other books include his autobiography "Living Dangerously" and "The Feather Men".

Fascinating

This book was my introduction to Ranulph Fiennes. I have been interested in the lost city of Ubar since reading about it in T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars. As a university student in 1973, I actually did some research into the mystery and even got so far as to trying to find funding to look for the city (it was to be my Graduate work in Archeology). That didn't work out so, many years later when I heard that the city had finally been found and that the explorer had written a book on the search, I immediately bought it and read, with delight, that someone had achieved my dream!
The book is well written and informative with good discriptions of the search, the people involved, and the logistics of the campaign. It also serves as a nice introduction to Mr, Fiennes. In both his fiction and non-fiction work he is an intelligent writer who always gives the reader something to "chew" on. I have now read seven of his books and, while this is not his best, it is still an informative and interesting read.

About the Author
David holds a B.S. degree in ocean engineering and a M.S. degree in civil engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. degree in civil engineering from the University of Connecticut.  He was employed by General Dynamics Corporation Electric Boat Division for five years, where he provided submarine construction support and conducted engineering design and analysis associated with pressure hull and other structures.  In addition, he conducted research in the area of noise and vibration transmission reduction in submarines.  He then taught at Lafayette College for one year prior to joining the civil engineering faculty at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he has been since 1990.  David is currently a member of the American Railway Engineering & Maintenance-of-way Association Committee 15 (Steel Structures), and the American Society of Civil Engineers Committee on Blast, Shock, and Vibratory Effects.  He has also worked with the Federal Railroad Administration on their bridge inspection training program.  Professional interests include bridge engineering, railroad engineering, tall towers, structural forensics, and blast-resistant design.  He is a licensed professional engineer in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Born in France and educated in France and Switzerland, Ferd held an M.S. degree from the Sorbonne and an Sc.D. degree in theoretical mechanics from the University of Geneva. He came to the United States after serving in the French army during the early part of World War II and had taught for four years at Williams College in the Williams-MIT joint arts and engineering program. Following his service at Williams College, Ferd joined the faculty of Lehigh University where he taught for thirty-seven years. He held several positions, including the University Distinguished Professors Chair and Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics Department, and in 1995 Ferd was awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree by Lehigh University. 

Born in Philadelphia, Russ holds a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and an Sc.D. degree in the field of structural engineering from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He taught at Lehigh University and Worchester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) before joining the faculty of the University of Connecticut where he held the position of Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department and taught for twenty-six years. In 1991 Russ received the Outstanding Civil Engineer Award from the Connecticut Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

I don't like the style of this book

I don't like the style of this book. They try to add colors to pages and stuff, but I like my pages white. My professor chose this one for his class, so I had to get it. The book itself has a lot of errors in the answers, which should be taken care of before publishing an 11th edition...

Useful book - outlines what to study and prep for - NOT a collection of questions.

This is an interesting book for Urology Board Review.

1. Reasonable priced (for these types of medical prep books)
2. Pretty up to date and reasonable.
3. Organized in a outline fashion. Unlike some prep books that are actually collection of questions, this book quickly organizes the field into a manageable outline. It has specific tables and helpful mnemonics. I like to study in this fashion - other people may not find as useful.
4. Most of all, it hits the "factoids". The reality is that all of the questions are of equal value - so a clinical question that is of great practical use is worth no more than a factoid question about embryology.

A Secret Collaboration

"Soldier" the exciting and gripping third book in the "Talon" series continues as Talon and St. George hunt for the rogues Ember Hill, Riley (aka ex-Basilisk Cobalt) and the soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian. The story picks up when Garret journeys to England the home of the Order of St. George and its Patriarch only to uncover a deadly secret and treacherous coalition that will shake the foundations of both organizations. When he discovers a plan to entrap and kill Ember and Riley, Garret engages the help of a new ally with the hope of returning in time to save the two rogue dragons.

After his dismal failure in capturing his sister Dante is enlisted by Talon to work on a secret project that will not only bolster their dragon army, but could mean the massacre of humanity. Although plagued by conscience Dante will do anything in his power to rise in Talon's hierarchy, and in fulfilling his duty will learn a shocking truth.

Set against a background of war between dragons and dragonslayers, odds against the rogues surviving the escalating clash mount as they learn a dangerous secret behind the growing number of attacks by the soldiers of St. George that could destroy Riley's underground network. Woven into this fascinating page-turner Garret's past and his training as a soldier after the death of his parents are revealed, giving new insight into his dedication to the Order and his beliefs before awakening to the truth of both.

One of the themes of this story centers around the fragility of life as dragonslayer missions escalate even attacking a peaceful temple, with a secret alliance that forces an agonizing decision, as well as the brutality of Talon's cloning scheme to supplement their breeding facilities. This plot is fast-paced and action-packed as Ember, Riley and Garret escape entrapment, raid a library, and are confronted with a deadly duel. Each new twist in the plot fuels the intensity and suspense until culminating in a shocking ending that begs for another novel.

And amid all the violence and turmoil Ember is faced with an agonizing decision about her feelings for Garret and Riley; one possessive and protective, the other conflicted and tormented. Yet as she struggles an Eastern Dragon adds a further complication to her emotional turmoil when she's told of the "Sallith'tahn" , a dragon's instinct to find their life-mate; an inclination thought eliminated by Talon to ensure the dragons devotion to their cause. But in a story that revolves around choices, Ember is determined to make her own decision about who to love which could have tragic repercussions in a world where death is never far away and the price of freedom is costly.

Ember Hill who's sick of all the killing, yearning for peace between dragons and humans continually matures as the series progresses. Stubborn, smart and resourceful she begins to accept the consequences of her life as a rogue. Like all the characters in this series Ember's personality continues to grow as she not only faces Talon's conniving manipulation in the war but is wounded again by St. George's soldiers. Brash and defiant Riley (aka the dragon Cobalt) is steadfast in his determination to protect his safe houses and the hatchlings. Hot-tempered, brash he's also cunning, brave and honourable, never yielding to his temptation to kill his rival. In contrast Garret Sebastian is a steady, unshakable soldier who wants to make amends for the blood he spilled. Frustrated and hurt when he left for England, his love and respect for Ember is constant, never changing. All these characters and many more like the serene, practical and empathetic Eastern dragon Jade; the arrogant and devious Patriarch; and Ember's ambitious but conflicted brother Dante continue to add power and passion to the evolving action and drama.

I give "Soldier" the third book in this highly imaginative and captivating series high praise I'm looking forward to the next story by this talented writer.

Bring on, Legion!

Seriously, the end, not only shook me up but left me panting like a dog in heat for more! I have a love/hate relationship with endings like this. I loved how it went but hate that I have to wait.
I liked the action in this one best of the three books so far. The romance was kind of on the back burner as the dragons and humans fought. Like, really fight in an all out war. But where it leads is what's cool.
Nothing like I expected, and that's a good thing, and yet still predictable in parts that worked.
I love this series, and can't wait to continue. Sad I have to anyway.
You really should read this if you like dragons. You will be thoroughly entertained.

Julie Kagawa never disappoints

Julie Kagawa never disappoints. Book 3 of the Talon saga continues to build on the world, as we're moved beyond the small town feeling in book 1 and even Las Vegas in book 2. It's a whole new ball game with Garret doing his investigation on the Order in England and running into new and exciting characters I won't spoil here, but I will say that we get a chance to see much more diverse dragons than just those within Talon or the rogue group. The character relations continue to be dynamic and interesting on all levels (though I have to say I could do without the love triangle), with Dante and Garret ending up as two characters I look forward to reading most about. Cannot wait for book 4!

Laugh and Learn...A Must Read!

I've long believed this author needed to be on a comedy stage and not at the reference desk of your public library. Little did I know that his career with books in the library would result in yet another laugh out loud masterpiece! "I've Seen It All at the Library" made me laugh and taught me things I didn't know about the American Library System. It is the kind of book that should be a must read for high school and college students. They wouldn't want to put it down, just like I didn't! Thanks, Jonathan for adding another book to my list of favorites!

I worked with jon and most of the folks he wrote about. It brought back many funny moments and I shed some tears when I read about myself. My story happened at a very sad time in my life and yet jon brought a smile to my face that day. Even if you dont know anyone in the book but have worked at a library you will enjoy the humor. Good job jon. Looking forward to book two!!!!

It started off okay but turned south. When Nick was a mean jerk to break things off it made no sense. He didn't even try to just say it wasn't going to work out. Sergio was also horrible. Liv was a bad friend. Liv's mom withheld info that she was asked to pass on to alleviate her fears. It made no sense. I didn't care for it.

In recognition of this void, the ASCE created a Task Committee to produce this "State of the Practice Report", which provides guidance to structural engineers in the design of civil structures to resist the effects of terrorist bombings. This report includes unrestricted government information, which is for the first time assembled collectively and rephrased for application to civilian facilities. Eight chapters outline the steps commonly followed in this practice. These are the determination of the threat, methods by which structural loadings are derived for the determined threat, the behavior and selection of structural systems, the design of structural components, the design of security doors, the design of utility openings, and the retrofitting of existing structures. This report is the first transfer of this technology to the civil sector, and provides complete methods, guidance, and references for structural engineers challenged with a physical security problem.

It is more of a philosophy than a technical book, there are no mathematical design examples given. Design should have been left out of the title.
