Arrived on time and in very good condition. I saved a lot of money buying the 7th ed. since the 8th is so expensive and the material is pretty much the same, chapters and everything. I am very happy with this purchase. :D

There is a better book by the same author

While this book covers all the basic topics for an introductory book... I feel it doesn't delve into enough detail. Also, the writing style is terse and doesn't flow well. It was published in 1984.

I would highly recommend Lad's more recent book (Ayurvedic Remedies) that was published in 1998. It covers everything that is already in this book plus you get remedies for common ailments. That book is relatable and written in a more friendly manner. He addresses some western aspects (for example he touches on how westerners are averse to vaman/vomiting therapy). Its just $3 more, I would get that.

Keeping it short: this is the only modern intro. to ayurveda that is utterly complete, thorough, concise... well written, top to bottom, thoughtfully organized.... full of very real everyday applications of ayurveda.... it's theory plus application.... confused about ayurveda? want more 'cause you still don't quite get it? yes, this is the book you need.... as an individual's very first book on ayurveda, it is potentially very dense, depending upon consciousness.... if you've already got the essentials in your head, this book will give you an acceleration of understanding...

excellent book

I had the privilage of being treated by Dr. Lad as well as going to several clases he gives at the Ayurvedic institute in Albuquerque NM. The book is a wonderful aid in trying to understand and identify health and disease. You have to be able to understand that "western" medicine is not the answer for everything and that in many cases it will eventually make you even sicker. What do you prefer, Prozac or a cup of some herbal tea that will eventually help you with depression?. What do you prefer, a cup of chamomile tea along with jatamansi or Pepto Bismol?. Ayurveda is something very real, helpful and extremely cheap. Hmmmm..... just wondering why allopacy wants to destroy alternative methods. Even better, is Ayurveda really an alternative treatment? 3,000 years before Jesus Ayurveda was being practiced...so, just wondering who's really alternative. Give it a try, Vasant Lad is a great humble and loving person.

About the Author

John Cromby is Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University, UK. Previously, he conducted research and teaching at the Universities of Nottingham and Bradford, and he has experience of working in mental health, drug addiction, and learning disability settings. His work engages with the ways that bodies and social processes come together to produce experience, including experiences of distress. In recent years this has meant exploring topics including paranoia, clinical sadness, emotion and fear of crime, and experimenting with methods of jointly analysing textual data and embodied activity. He is a former editor of the journal Subjectivity.

David Harper is Reader in Clinical Psychology at the University of East London (UEL), UK. He trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Liverpool and worked as a clinical psychologist in National Health Service mental health services in the north-west of the UK for nine years. For a number of years he combined work as a clinician with part-time study for a PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University. He has been at UEL since 2000 and his research interests are in applying critical psychology and social constructionist ideas to the understanding both of distress (particularly paranoia and unusual experiences and beliefs) and the work of mental health professions. He co-authored Deconstructing psychopathology (1995) and co-edited Qualitative research methods in mental health and psychotherapy: An introduction for students and practitioners (2012). He undertakes a small amount of clinical work as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in Newham as part of the Systemic Consultation Service.

Paula Reavey is Professor of Psychology at London South Bank University, UK, where she delivers a module on the psychology of mental health and distress. She edited the volume Visual Psychologies: Using and Interpreting Images in Qualitative Research (2011) and also co-edited two volumes, New Feminist Stories of Child Sexual Abuse: Sexual Scripts and Dangerous Dialogues (with Sam Warner, 2003) and Memory Matters: Contexts for Understanding Sexual Abuse Recollections (with Janice Haaken, 2009). She is currently working on a co-authored book Vital Memory: Ethics, Affect and Agency (with Steven D. Brown, 2013) and has also published numerous articles on social remembering, child sexual abuse and sexuality, mental distress, and embodiment and space, using a variety of methodologies, including memory work, discourse analysis and visual methods.

This is just a rehash of websites. Completely useless and timewasting - and doesn't teach you anything as the title suggests. The compiler should be ashamed.

A disappointing book. I expected more from this title. It certainly didn't cover "everything". A pedestrian guide, at best.

I was disappointed in this Kindle book. Without even discussing the quality of the information contained within, please, if you are going to the effort to publish a book, even an e-book, please do the courtesy to your readers to edit for grammar, spelling, and clarity. Throughout this book, I found typos, stray punctuation, and even copy-paste errors where parts of sentences were repeated from one paragraph to another. This kind of thing makes me want to stop reading right away. I also found many of the explanations and strategies to be quite poorly articulated, leading me to think that this book was written hastily and purely for the possibility of earning a few bucks that the author could convert into bitcoins to increase his personal wealth, and provide very little beneficial information to the user. There is nothing in here you can't learn from other sources for free. I was glad that I borrowed this book from the Kindle Lending Library, because if I had actually spent money on it, I would be demanding a refund.

Bitcoin: a government-free economy?

I used to think that money/currency was something that was always issued and controlled by the government and there was no other way. The idea of having a people currency, developed by a mysterious computer wizard (or a group of them?) with a Japanese-sounding name, is intriguing. Nobody can know what the future holds, but this book definitely provides enough information about the past and the present of the bitcoin to help us make educated guesses about the future of this interesting currency. Bitcoin has been in the news a lot lately, so this book is very timely. Five stars.

As much a tribute to Rebennack's native New Orleans and its vibrant music scene as it is an autobiography, this candid book provides an inside look at the drug-using, hell-raising lifestyle adopted by many rock musicians. Writing in a loose, slangy style with freelancer Rummel, Rebennack, whose albums as Dr. John ( Gris Gris ; Gumbo ) helped popularize the distinctively Cajun-influenced music that is now a hallmark of the New Orleans sound, presents a compelling picture of his hometown as a place of enormous musical energy and excitement. We read of all-night jam sessions, quirky local characters and Voodoo rituals (the sobriquet Dr. John is borrowed from an early Voodoo master). Influenced by such New Orleans greats as James Booker and Professor Longhair, Rebennack hit the road with his first band when he was 16 and, because of narcotics, soon found himself in trouble with the law. He is oddly blase about drugs and tries so hard to maintain his cool-cat rock 'n' roll persona that he comes across more as a caricature than as a real person. Rebennack, a.k.a. Dr. John the Night Tripper, was born in New Orleans in 1940. In his early teens he played hooky from Catholic school in order to pitch songs to Little Richard and Art Neville. By the age of 16, he had recorded an album of original songs and developed a heroin habit. Over the next six years, he honed his craft playing for strippers, pimps, junkies, and even a pickpocketing monkey. When the infamous Jim Garrison cleaned up the city in 1962, Mac took a two-year sabbatical at a federal prison in Fort Worth. Upon his release, he headed for California, where his prodigious session work led to his solo career as Dr. John, one of the Sixties' most outrageous and creative performers. Today, four Grammy Awards later and his drug problems behind him, he's still rocking. This no-holds-barred autobiography by the hippest, "fonkiest" cat to come down the musical turnpike is essential for music libraries.

Musician Mac Rebennack, aka Dr. John, is the embodiment of New Orleans culture, and his colorful autobiography serves as a virtual history of the city's music from the 1950s on. As a teenager, Rebennack had already launched a successful career as a guitarist when his finger was nearly shot off, forcing him to switch to piano. Eventually, he landed in L.A., where he survived on session work until in 1967 his career as a headliner took off when he created the stage persona Dr. John the Night Tripper, a sort of psychedelic voodoo king. This book ends with Rebennack's return to New Orleans to record his most recent album, a tribute to the city's musical history. Some of its most engaging passages are recollections of musicians Rebennack learned from and played with; most notable among them is the affectionate tribute to his musical godfather, Professor Longhair. Like many such memoirs, the story loses a bit of its drive once its subject begins to achieve commercial success, but Rebennack's distinctive "N'Owleans" patois, which he and Rummel capture to perfection, helps sustain interest throughout. Interesting stories from a singular man

I got this book partly because I wanted to learn about Dr. John, but the other reason was because I wanted to learn about New Orleans music in the 50's. At the $5 used price, it was hard not to. It's entertaining on both fronts, with plenty of stories about the shady characters and wild band mates you would imagine going down in New Orleans at the time. It reads very much like an interview, and he's completely honest about everything and everyone (i.e. his rant on Van Morrison was entertaining). But like every autobiography, some details on certain aspects of his life were not embellished upon. While he does talk a lot about music, he doesn't really ever go into detail as to HOW he learned piano! We know he was originally a guitar player, but his transition to piano was always a mystery to me. Was it immediate, or had he learned bits and pieces before? Did he take lessons and learn how to read, or was it all street-learned? All these questions, and yet he kind of glosses over all those years of learning piano during the 1960's, but goes into great detail about his years of guitar lessons. Oh well. Overall, if you're a casual fan, it's probably something you can skip. But as a huge fan of Dr. John and the New Orleans music scene, past and present, it was a no-brainer for me to buy this.

Dr. John's spirit is alive in this book. It's honest, raw and real. His musicality comes through in his words. If you want to see what's behind his music, this is a good place. If you want to hear what's behind the man, listen to his music.

There's a rhythm to the words of musicians. I found the same rhythm in the words of Smokey Robinson and Keith Richards in their books. They bare their souls in their music and can't seem to contain the truth in their words.

I just saw him perform recently, and it's means so much more now having seen something of how he became who he is.

Insights into the post-war New Orleans music scene

I bought this book because I had heard a series of interviews with Mac (on [...]) made during the research for the book. The book is amazingly true to the interviews. The guy can talk. If I hadn't heard the interviews I might have been turned off by the idiosyncrasies of spelling and language, like fonk instead of funk.

To me, it provided a very absorbing inside look at the post-war New Orleans music scene. Man, that was tough: cut-throat competition for work, ubiquitous drugs, and significant violence. It was interesting to read about how so many people kept such remarkable focus on improving as musicians in the business. The discussions of the LA recording scene were interesting too.

Excellent for What It Is...

Bodyguarding Basics is one of the little self-published createspace/lulu type books and is only a tiny 4x6" at 90 pages. It DOES give a lot of the basics, with stories and checklists. I edit tutorials on becomeabodyguard dot com and there are a dozen good texts and videos ranging from $200 to this at $13. The size is perfect for a "beginner" summary that will fit in a small envelope with a DVD, etc.

Terry Hipp's Executive Protection: The Essentials is a little bigger and a little less expensive, but also good when you can find it in stock (it is usually Prime here on Ama). In general, although there are about 20 good titles available on Amazon right now under the keyword executive protection, some of the better/ more expensive ones date back to the 90s when Facebook/twitter etc. were not the issues they are today, so for more advanced texts, try to stay with 2010 or later, such as Machine's VERY fine Israeli Security Concepts: A Comprehensive Guide For Selecting Training And Deploying A Security Team For Installation And Personnel Protection (Volume 2).
