... Joshi's book justifies the price both in cash, and more importantly the number of hours it will consume to make sure you do this stuff right. Give there are >225 main questions that can work out as one to two weeks of your life, and of course, I have to tell you that the longer you take to work through it the more time you should work on this stuff to get the job you want. ...

About the Author
Mark S. Joshi is a Professor in the Centre for Actuarial Studies at the University of Melbourne. He has wide experience of teaching courses in financial mathematics and has previously held posts at the University of Cambridge and at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Risk Management. In February 2004 he was appointed Head of Quantitative Research Centre (QUARC) at RBS. He is the author of six books and numerous papers on both financial and pure mathematics, and has been an invited speaker at many international conferences.

Hands on practice

I completely agree with the previous opinion.
I have been interviewing with investment banks for some period. The permanent difficulty has been how to prepare for the interview. Who is a bit familiar with the topic knows, that virtually any subject ( from Lie groups and connexions to IFRS bookkeeping standards ) can pop up during the interviews. Given the time constraint for the preparation theses technical interviews are always a "pain in the arse".
But not any longer. Actually the problems in this book ARE the questions which are asked by the firms. Just to name a few :
1. Solve the OU equation and get its moments ( Lehman )
2. What are martingales, filtration, etc ( BarCap )
3. Generate exponentially distributed random numbers in 2D ( Morgan Stanley )
4. The barrier options and their vega ( ABN Amro )
5. Hedging and its practices ( a small IT firm in Munchen )
6. And a LOT ( really ) of coin throwing, binomial trees, mostly associated with practical finanacial problems ( CDS, ameriacan and barrier options, etxc).
7. Soring algorithms

These problems ARE covered in the problem set. So if you can solve, say, 70% of all questions it must be sufficient to get through the interviews.

There are some problems with the book. It should contain a bit more stuff on PDE's and first generation exotics. E.g.
1. Schetch the quantitative behavoiur of a solution of a double barrier for a given payoff
2. Derive the price for a perpetual up and in option ( etc )

I am recommending this book with the books of Joshi ( Concepts of Finance ) and Rebonato ( the perfect hedger and the fox ).
If you interview for a senior position these books may also suit you, since you are often grilled with these coin throwing things even for a VP position.

Great Practice

This is a great book if you need to prepare for quantitative interviews of any kind, and not just quantitative finance interviews. The book has a nice collection of logic and probability puzzles which get asked at a variety of interviews. Then there are lots of Black-Scholes, option pricing questions which might be of help to those facing quant interviews. There are math questions from complex analysis, matrix theory that I found really good.

All questions are solved, and the author also gives some follow up questions after the solutions. I often found some of these follow up questions very hard, and maybe the author can give some hints to them too. The author runs a website where you can interact with him, but then I am sure he is too busy to be answering all queries. So maybe in a future edition he will drop some hints to some of the harder follow up problems too.

And in the probability questions, the author doesnt use ideas from stochastic theory, which could lead to some problems being solved really quick. So maybe the author should also consider including alternative solutions to questions, whenever and whereever possible.

Good, but could be more clear

I am a math finance student who will soon start a summer internship on Wall Street. I want to leave feedback for the best and worst books that I used in my studies so far.

The book is well balanced. The advice on the interviewing process and what should expect there is excellent. Topics covered:
Options pricing
Probability
Interest rates
Numerical techniques
Mathematics
Coding in C++
Brainteasers

There are extra questions (but with no solutions) in each chapter.

The solutions are good and detailed. One comment is that the questions are thrown together in a way that makes it hard to know which ones are easy/hard, and are more likely to be asked in first interviews. But if you know everything in the book you look really good on interviews.

along with the poor structure of the chapters

This was the textbook for my Negotiation class, and it has some serious flaws in my opinion...

First, the layout is disorganized, and the concepts are often strangely linked and overlap in a way that makes understanding the ideas much more difficult.

Second, there are grammatical mistakes throughout. This, along with the poor structure of the chapters, makes it hard to believe that the book was ever proofread.

There are also some other issues – some ideas seem contradictory in the book since the author compiles findings from many different sources. However, as a result, there is often no clear framework for understanding negotiations more clearly. Facts from other sources are often stated without commentary on how that finding links to strategic frameworks more generally. Again, this relates to the idea of poor organization and overall flow of the book. Definitions of certain terms are often unclear, and even when they are given they are subsequently used in contexts that do not align with the initially given meaning.

Overall, it has some decent insight to improving negotiation abilities; there are also many interesting examples of negotiations throughout (though the applicability to the section those negotiations are in varies). However, the author lacks sufficient ability to coherently structure the ideas in textbook form.

Wonderful book for children and adults

My eight year old daughter asked for this book after her library teacher read it to her class at school. I rarely turn down a request for books, so I ordered it for her. When it came, and I read it to her, I couln't get through it without becoming all choked up! It is a beautiful story about a crippled lamb who, because of his lameness, is in the stable when the Baby Jesus is born. It is wonderful because it says not only does your infirmity not limit you, it can actually give you an opportunity for greatness!

About the Author
Judd Winick is an award-winning cartoonist and the creator of the comic series "The Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius". He also writes for "Batman", "Green Lantern", and "Exiles", and is the creator and producer of the animated series "The Life and Times of Juniper Lee". He lives in San Francisco.

Jason Todd just won't die...but it's a good thing

This story takes place after the infamous Batman story "A Death in the Family" and before the equally infamous "Under the Red Hood". It focuses on Jason Todd's struggle with his second chance on life and what to do with it. It also examines his relationship with Batman's greatest foes, the Al Ghuls, especially Talia. Jason is trained in ways Bruce never would dare to do so, ways to kill. With the encouragement of Talia, Jason uses his new skills to be a deadly vigilante. His ultimate goal is to kill the man that killed him, The Joker, and the man he holds responsible for allowing this man to live, The Batman.

Overall, I really enjoyed this short series. I got over the bringing back of Jason Todd and have liked what writer Judd Winick does a terrific job with this character. I did not care for how Jason was brought back in "Under the Red Hood", via "Infinite Crisis" tie-in, but that aside, Jason Todd is a strong character whom you find yourself rooting for. He was trained by a sociopath and then murdered by one. That will have quite an effect on someone, just so you know where Jason is coming for. The art is very good as well. Even though there are three different pencilers, they all have a similar style so it does not distract from the story.

What robs this story of being five stars is the big drag and redundancy in the middle of the story. The first chapter is phenomenal, with great character portrayals of Ra's and Talia, but the bulk of the story seems to just go about the same pattern of Jason gets trained by some scumbag and then dislikes them, rinse, and repeat. When the final chapter comes around we get into who we want Jason going after. I understand that the middle is building his character, which is very good, but it just felt so redundant. And at the end there is an interaction between Jason and Talia that comes out of nowhere and felt thrown in for shock value.

All in all, great read!

Let me just pick my heart up off the floor.

You see, here you are shown the formerly dead second Robin, who had been brutally beaten with a crowbar by The Joker and left to die, as a now resurrected Jason Todd, go from a zombie-like vagrant to taken under wing by a (imo) RUTHLESS Talia al Ghul, encouraged on a path of training that will eventually lead to his becoming of the uber-vigilant, highly skilled terrorist - the Red Hood.

But while this story fills in what happened to Jason after coming back from the dead and being discovered by Ra's al Ghul, but before he comes back to Gotham, "The Lost Days" also explores how mentally tortured he is during this time.

This street boy turned man is just so broken, conflicted and in a lot of emotional pain after first surviving his sociopathic, manipulating mentor only to be severely let down by him when his death was not avenged, to now being manipulated and trained by Talia who's agenda is to use him to do something to Bruce.

I must admit that I developed a better appreciation for Jason Todd as Robin in hindsight, after he came back from the dead, resurrected with the identity of the new Red Hood, and I am always sympathizing with this version of Jason, getting a sense of how much Bruce really meant to this kid, despite his reprehensible behaviour of manipulating and exploiting the child. Now there's really added depth to Jason as Robin II, and you clearly see just how messed up he is over the betrayal and "loss" of his beloved mentor.

In this storyline, i really was invested in Jason's portrayal, his character was intensely interesting, and though he ultimately becomes selfish and deadly, my heart hurt for him, and that's because Winick had a perfect understanding of Jason Todd, I think the way he was meant to be.

In "The Lost Days" you plainly see how this deeply affected young man develops the qualities of an "antihero" and comes to be the character he is now; and one of my most favourites in the Bat 'verse.

When I first watched Batman: Under the Red Hood, also written by Judd Winick, I was *BLOWN* away, and it still has that effect on me! Just, amazing. I think this writer did GREAT with this story of Jason's lost years and how he struggled so much, explaining how he's become a fallen superhero, much like Morrison's take in essentially making him a Batman that was willing to fight fire with fire.

I also liked how Winick showed pieces of the complicated relationship between Ra's and Talia and how Batman acutely affects them.

And the ARTWORK, damn, that is pretty terrific, too!

I absolutely *LOVED* "The Lost Days"! There's a lot of action, too; we see Jason train in new ways that Bruce wouldn't have offered and how he hones his new lethal skills, stands against corruption, and learns to apply his IDEALS.

There's also some angst in seeing how tragic the situation that was his life as a whole really was. He is what circumstances beyond his control have made him. With this story I can't understand how anyone could accept Jason as simply a bad guy in conflict with the Bat family.

Overall I think Lost Days had GREAT character development and compelling storytelling. It comes down to revenge, rebellion, and watching a struggling soul come into its element on the way to face the pain.

Good but dated

Overall this is a very good book. This moderately experienced home shop machinist definitely learned from it. I have only read volume 1. The only gripe I have is that despite the copyright date the text and especially the photos are very dated. More 50's and 60's than the 1981 copyright date. That's OK for the most part, but there is no discussion any modern machinery, I think DROs got about two paragraphs. This book is definitely more detailed than Machine Shop Trade Secrets or Machine Shop Essentials and a good addition if you already have these. If you're OK with not having a book on the latest machinery and technology this is a good reference.

This book is a "must have". It is a great memory jogging tool.

It serves as a "30 years out of trade school" refresher. I particularly like the speeds and feeds section. I highly recommend this book to hobbist and machinst alike. There's something for everyone!

Alison Pearlman is a Los Angeles–based art historian and cultural critic who blogs under the name the Eye in Dining. She teaches modern and contemporary art and design history at Cal Poly Pomona and is the author of Unpackaging Art of the 1980s, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

A Must Read for All Foodies - Front & Back of the House!

Ms. Pearlman's Smart Casual is a truly ambitious undertaking, and she rises to the challenge of taking us through "the transformation of gourmet restaurant style in America" with bushels of industry blurb presented in a deliciously palatable format for the reader. Like those cooks who puree spinach and bake it into the brownies, the book is chock full of really-good-for-you stuff like how and why gourmet restaurants with invisible chefs in invisible kitchens have evolved into celebrity status chefs with open and interactive kitchens, the carefully calculated design and lighting of those kitchens, and how social and cultural trends have spurred the popularity of cookbooks, recreational cooking classes, and vacation travel as destination eating. And that's a mere morsel: From Jose Andres's minibar in DC to Alice Waters' Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Ms. Pearlman table-hops us through a mouth-watering journey of meals, trendy and traditional, and provides the hip, informed dinner conversation as well - meticulously researched and ladled out with a fresh voice, a dry wit and an undeniably deep appreciation for food and its social and cultural currency.
