Many Lovely Poems

This book was a purchase well made! I enjoyed reading many of the poems. Most of the work is short, simple, yet hauntingly beautiful and I felt myself really connecting with some of the poems. The reason I am knocking down one star is because although many of the poetry was powerful and evocative, there were a few poems in there that kind of made me scratch my head and wonder how I went from one lovely poem on one page then turn the page to read something such as:

"He makes me blush! He makes me want to brush and floss!" Girl, I hope he doesn't have a nasty mouth to make you want to clean your own.

In all seriousness though, it just felt like the author did not put as much thought into some poems that they lacked the same depth and maturity as the others. Some of these shallow poems did have potential though. Don't get me wrong, I was still able to very much enjoy this book. The thoughtful, well written poems make this book worth the buy! And I must also mention, the included artwork is delightful!

You have probably seen tidbits of Lang Leav's "Love and Misadventure" somewhere out there on the internet, and if you're like me- trust me when I say that you won't be disappointed. Leav's poetry really has the reader connect with the poet and vice versa. She says all that she needs to say and she does it simply and beautifully. There are no hard to comprehend words nor concepts, and most of her poems are short though strong in emotion. I had been waiting forever to get her book, and although it took me awhile I finally did so early in the month of May. I read most of her poems the very day I received the book. If you're looking into buying this book... just know that its title tells you exactly what you are to expect and that Lang Leav does a wonderful job in writing poetry , expressing herself, and connecting with you.

The perfect book to read in your bathtub with a glass of wine and a piece of dark chocolate. When I get in my sulky moods this is especially great. Beautiful and simple poems, well organized, and not all that abstract yet they can get you thinking. I look forward to buying more from this author because she thinks the way I do. Miss Leav, I am a huge fan. The illustrations are a nice addition too. ( Side Note: I am a 21 y/o female)

surprising mix of efficiency and depth

I only budgeted a brief time to reading the book so far, but managed to transform my LinkedIn profile. I'm usually a skeptic about these kinds of books and hope other social media guides will copy the style here:
1) The book gets you exactly where you need to go as far as LinkedIn as a website, so you don't waste time looking for buttons if you're not spending your life at LinkedIn.
2) But then the advice comes in short, sharp but highly intelligent pieces, relevant to exactly where you are. She really knows what she's talking about, and puts the right piece of advice on the right page.

Not many authors smart enough to be subtle also do the work to be organized enough to match each edit button on a website. Where another book you might read a chapter of general advice and then stumble around trying to figure out what it means for you, here I'd read a paragraph and make a useful change, then repeat, all very quickly.

Not enough "how to" to make it worth paying for.

There were some helpful points about mistakes people make, especially about writing a better header, but overall there wasn't anything earth shattering. A lot of the same points I've seen in articles online. It was nice to have it all together, but truthfully I wouldn't buy this book or recommend someone to buy it. I think I got to read it for free as part of my Kindle Unlimited plan. When I finally did wind up redoing my Linked In profile, I hired a professional service to do it. For the $50 I spent on the service, worth every penny. Way better than some of the money I spent on these Kindle Linked In books. There just wasn't enough "how to" to make it worth the time or money.

The title of this review pretty much says it all... This is by far the best book I've read on building an amazing LinkedIn profile (and I've been reading a lot lately as I look for new opportunities to network through social media). The author, Brenda Bernstein, goes to incredible lengths to analyze and test what works and what doesn't work on LinkedIn. In her book, Bernstein clearly outlines step-by-step what you need to do to improve, refine and increase the visibility of your profile. After following her advice, my LinkedIn profile views and appearances in searches have nearly doubled! I know that if I keep refining and updating my profile, as Bernstein suggests, I will see even greater results. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to build and improve their online presence via LinkedIn. This will be the best money you'll ever spend on your career.

Mischa Berlinski, a reporter who's moved to northern Thailand to be with his schoolteacher girlfriend, Rachel, hears from his friend Josh about the suicide of Martiya van der Leun, an American anthropologist, in a Thai jail, where she was serving 50 years for murder. As Mischa begins to investigate Martiya's life and supposed crimes, he becomes increasingly obsessed with the woman. The complications that arise have the potential to be riveting, but the chatty narrative voice takes too many irrelevant detours to build much suspense. Still, Berlinski, who has been a journalist in Thailand, vividly portrays the exotic setting and brings depth and nuance to his depictions of the Thais. Mischa Berlinski originally intended to write an account of the real-life Lisu tribe of Thailand, but held scant interest in the project until he decided to fictionalize the natives and turned his research into a novel. In this readable and clever debut, told almost entirely in backstory, Berlinski explores the problems inherent in trying to assume the perspective of another person or culture and the enduring conflict between faith and science. While he treats each perspective with genuine empathy, he refuses to take sides. Critics had a couple of complaints—a lagging secondary plot and a few descriptions with a textbook feel—but dismissed them as minor. They unanimously praised Berlinski’s wit, style, and intelligence in this atmospheric "novel that never fails to fascinate" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

This novel is an amalgam of murder mystery, historical novel, psychological thriller, and even travelogue, but its multiple dimensions are not a drawback. The premise is solid and creative: a young American freelance writer accompanies his girlfriend to Thailand, where, from a person he'd known before, he is offered a tantalizing story to pursue, "as a gift." It seems a woman anthropologist had been imprisoned in Thailand for murder and subsequently killed herself during her incarceration. The narrator takes up the story, assumes the challenge, and goes in search of the answers to two overriding questions: Whom did the woman murder and why? Berlinski is obviously fascinated by the history of twentieth-century anthropology and equally eager to share his knowledge of tribal customs in rural Thailand. The reader learns a great deal about fieldwork but significantly less about the effortless integration of fact into fiction. In this, Berlinski is somewhat clumsy. Brad Hooper

Excellent Book

Well-researched and excellently paced novel. I was fascinated by the level of detail and found the non-judgmental tone of the author refreshing. The novel ended up being an anthropological study of 3 separate tribes--the fictional Dyalo (who appear to be based on the Lisu tribe the novelist studied extensively--look on [...]), American Protestant missionaries, and the curious tribe that lives in figurative ivory towers who spend their lives studying other tribes. The author seems to suggest that the universal tragedy that serves as the basis for the murder mystery aspect of the novel is the result not merely a simplistic clash between East and West, but one that can happen to any peoples who do not share the same world view or to anyone in any culture subject to common human emotions.

Terrific read, and highly recommended. I look forward to Mr. Berlinksi's future literary output--maybe something set in Italy, or perhaps involving Haitian voodoo cults?

A Unique and Fascinating Literary Hybrid

"Fieldwork," by Mischa Berlinski, is a fascinating literary hybrid--part mystery novel, part fictionalized memoir, and part well-research (but completely fictionalized) cultural anthropology. The writing is outstanding--easy and unadorned with lyrical touches that appear out of nowhere to delight and beguile. There is also a surprising amount of subtle humor that pops up unexpectedly throughout. The characters are spot-on perfect--so utterly authentic that it's almost impossible to believe the author when he admits in the end notes that: "None of this stuff happened to anyone."

I found this book absorbing, unique, and fascinating in just about every respect. What interested me most, was not the plot so much as it was the chance to immerse myself in a multitude of exotic new worlds--worlds that I would never have experienced on my own. In this book, readers are invited inside many diverse worlds, in particular: the culture of evangelical Christian missionaries working with the hill tribes of Northern Thailand, the culture of worldwide present-day expatriates in Thailand, the culture of 1980s UC Berkeley Graduate School of Anthropology students, the culture of the fictional Thailand hill tribe of the Dyalos, and a number of other minor cultural experiences both historical and contemporary along the way.

For me, the entire reading experience was like one entertaining intellectual armchair adventure ride!

Briefly, the book tells the story of a female UC Berkeley-trained anthropologist, who murdered an evangelical Christian missionary around 1990 in the wilds of Northern Thailand. Before the murder, the anthropologist had been studying and living with a single Dyalo hill tribe for 15 years. The man she murdered spoke Dyalo like a native. He loved the Dyalo as if they were his own family because he was raised alongside them in China near the Thai border. As an infant and small child, his missionary parents raised him in an American-style home built with enormous difficulty in an isolated valley populated primarily by Dyalo tribesmen. The family had to flee to Thailand from their "Eden Valley" home in the 1950s when China expelled all foreigners. The missionary family moved to Northern Thailand. Eventually the anthropologist and the missionary crossed paths, and the murder took place. The anthropologist was tried and convicted for her crime. She served 15 years of a 50-year sentence in a Thai prison before taking her own life. An American expatriate freelance journalist living in present-day Thailand investigates the whole story and relates his findings to us. In a twist that may make some purists cringe, the author names his fictional narrator after himself. Thus, the novel takes on the quality of a memoir, albeit, a totally fictional one.

Obviously, this is a book about clashing cultural values. To the author's great credit, he treats both sides with enormous humanity and understanding.

Little by little over the course of this detailed novel, we learn about the precise circumstances surrounding the murder. In the end, all the physical pieces come together. But knowing the exact circumstances of the murder, however satisfying they are to know, is not what this book is all about. Once readers finishes this book, they will start pondering all the diverse global political, economic, social, psychological, religious, and ecological issues that the work stirs up. Somewhere in the middle of all those issues, each reader will come to terms with the underlying motivations behind the murder. So the plot is just the enticing thread that leads us toward and into a lot of major contemporary social issues.

You have to love reading all three parts of this chimera--the novel, the memoir, and the pseudo-nonfiction cultural anthropology--or this book will fail to please you. At first, it wasn't easy getting used to reading this hybrid. For me, it was a wholly different type of reading experience, and I actually needed to adjust my normal reading pattern in order get into the swing of things, and start enjoying the experience. Perhaps I'm not like other readers, but I tend to read novels, memoirs, and nonfiction works in different ways. I started out reading this book as if it were a novel, and that was wrong for me. I ended up reading this book as if I were reading nonfiction and that seemed to work better. If your reading tastes are broad and happily encompass novels, memoirs, and nonfiction works of cultural anthropology, then you'll probably love this book as much as I did. If you don't enjoy one of those three types of reading, or if you want the book to be only one type and not all three, then you'll probably have difficulty getting into and through this work...or, if you do, you'll probably find significant fault with the work as a whole. My advice: expect a hybrid, read it as a hybrid, and you will probably not be disappointed.

I can easily see why this unique novel caught the attention of nationwide book critics and was a finalist for the 2007 National Book Award. I will certainly recommend it to many (but not all), of my book-loving friends. I look forward to more books by this talented new author. Personally, I hope he sticks to this unique hybrid format, but if he branches out into new territory next time, I'll happily tag along. He's certainly made it to my "must-read" list.

Best book I've read this year and last

So many qualities that usually exist in books that I love I found in Fieldwork: stories about foreign cultures, stories about expats, has something to say about life and life in a foreign country (espec. non-western country), I can learn something about another subject - the writer is not just a novelist but has expertise in another field (i.e. anthropology, linguistics), interesting and realistic characters, decent prose and a good story that holds one's attention from beginning to end, a story that doesn't fall apart at the end like so many books written by first-time writers, an unpredictable ending.

I am not sure you can really appreciate this book if you haven't lived for an extended time in Asia, Africa or South America. The writer really captures what it is like to be an expat or a former expat. Throughout the book I kept on saying yes, yes, that's it, that is exactly what it's like. The longer you stay in a foreign country, the less you feel you understand about that culture. The difficulty in returning home - no one cares about your stories and finding yourself struggling to fit in a society where all people care about it how big their flat screen tv is or how much they have in their 401K.

I loved the stuff about Malinowski, anthropology and linguistics. I found it informative and it really added to the story and the understanding of Martiya and Mischa.

I really look forward to reading more from this writer. I hope he continues with the same subject matter. There aren't enough books about Americans interactions with foreign cultures. I have to say I had a good laugh at his description of all the old white American males and their young Thai wives. I could say more about this but I don't want to offend anyone. But totally spot on!!!

Characters? Bad. Story? Good.

Decent novel. The characters aren't particularly likable (has "Michaels" ever even met a woman from Arkansas?) and there are a few technical mistakes involving which missiles are which, but the story is intriguing enough to make up for that. It has no ties to the game of the same name aside from a vaguely similar plot, but, unlike the game, the novel actually involves the program the franchise is named for. Plenty of action, suspense, surprises, some wonderful dogfights, and a clear setup for a sequel make this a must-read for anyone who's been keeping up with the other Ubisoft/Clancy franchises the mysterious pseudonym "Michaels" has been novelizing.

Greatt Dogfights, Poor Drama

Overall this was a decent book. Not the best, but good enough to keep my interest engaged. However, all of the characters in this story are very shallow. Relationships are seemingly focused only on lust and sex. And the time in between many of the scenes in this book jump ahead suddenly and unexpectedly. The best thing about the story were the detailed dogfights that take place up in the air between advanced aviation aircraft. I envisioned the flight scenes from the movie, "Top Gun" throughout this storyline as good pilot takes on bad pilot.

If you like a book with a fast read, shallow characters, and lots of adventure, then this book is good for you. Otherwise, save your money and stick with a real Tom Clancy novel instead.

HAWX is a misfire

HAWX is awful.

I'd read David Michaels' (A.K.A. Grant Blackwood) Ghost Recon and liked it enough to try more. It wasn't great, but for a book based on a game franchise, it did what I wanted. It was fast moving and the combat was very well done. When I heard Blackwood wrote novelizations of HAWX and EndWar, I picked them up. I decided to try HAWX first because, well, because I liked the cover better.

HAWX sounds promising: Former hot shot Air Force fighter pilot Troy Leonsch (I know, I couldn't pronounce it either. I called him 'Troy Lunch') signs up with private military contractor Firehawk and gets the action he misses and a hefty paycheck. But are PMCs a good idea? Troy isn't so sure. When the CIA asks Troy to help investigate Firehawk, he does.

Sounds great! But the book is full of problems. HAWX is very slow moving and even though it has a promising set-up, the book that was written feels padded and dull. For one thing, Firehawk doesn't appear until around page 150. The CIA? They don't show up until half way through the book. The action that carried Ghost Recon is here as well, but there is very little of it and it isn't really tied in to the story.

The rest of the book is made up of cheesy soap opera elements in Troy's romantic life. I mentioned that I enjoyed Ghost Recon. One thing that I had problems with was the characterizations, which were poor. I accepted them in that book because they came in small doses. In HAWX, about half of the book is made up of Troy's personal life.

Also, even though Blackwood writes in a very easy to read style which works for the books he is writing, here he tended to over-explain even simple things. I felt like he was talking down to me. At one point, he quotes Buzz Aldrin, and then explains who Buzz Aldrin is. Buzz Aldrin!

Finally, the third act is hare-brained and absurd. The idea of a PMC pulling off a coup against the U.S. is interesting, but here it is handled in such a half-baked manner I wondered if the author understood the way the government works. The plot point used to remove the President never takes into account that there is a Vice President or the Speaker of the House. I'm willing to accept some ridiculous stuff in my fiction, but please make it plausible.

As I read through the book I realized I didn't care about any of the characters or where the story was going. I finished the book only due to stupid, grim determination. Towards the end, I was angry at myself for sticking with the book, but I did.

Please understand that I'm not expecting Tolstoy when I read a book based on a Tom Clancy video game. I do expect a book that is fast paced, pulpy fun. The author of this book has proved he's up to the task in previous books. I will give EndWar a chance. Ghost Recon was enjoyable enough for me to give him a third try. But HAWX is a failure of a book in every way.

Great follow-up to Volume 1

I received my copy of Greg's new Volume 2 of "Drum Your Way......." and though I have not gone through the entire book yet what I have seen and tried is wonderful. I must say that once again Mr. Sundel has knocked it out of the park!
Greg's references to the band's and drummer's that illuminate the grooves in these pages is awesome. I highly recommend that all drummers listen to these pieces of music and the musicians playing them. Listen to the songs Greg mentions in his book while reading the basic grooves for the songs shown in the book. Brings it home for sure and helps our understanding of the sense of timing Greg speaks about. Besides, it's fun. Don't forget to download the free music offered at gregsundel.com and check out Greg's suggestions on page 119.
Rock guys & gals, well all drummers, check out the Rock grooves and fills and Greg's bass drum workouts are the best. You will develop an easy, relaxed rhythmic flow between hands and bass drum by practicing these pages. This holds true for all of the examples and grooves in this, my new Tome of Drumming, "Drum You Way from Beginning Joe to Drumming Pro Volume 2".

Masterful follow-up drum instruction guide for serious students!

Greg doesn't mess around with this spectacular follow-up to his beginner's guide. Triplets, fills, rolls, shuffles, really cool stuff to learn -- they're all in Volume II. Greg references the great drummers (Bonham, Appice, even Phil Collins, to name a very few) that influenced him and explains/notates what helped make them famous and admired for generations. There are a slew of different exercises and measures to practice, and they vary in complexity. If you want a non-cutsie, non-gimmicky, thick book of advanced drumming knowledge, this is it.

Do yourself a favor and grab both volumes at the same time and soon enough you'll progress through the first to get to the second, and, if you're like me, I use em as coffee table books. I don't give a crap if my guests can't read drum notation. It's my coffee table.

Drumming Greg's way and your way

Greg has come up with great workouts for playing blues, jazz, and rock and roll of all kinds. The paradiddle challenge has my students eager to apply it to the drum set in musical ways. The snare studies are excellent for helping us all to count out loud, to feel at ease with the subdivisions of beats and to make our time-keeping solid. Above all, the book inspires us to move beyond the printed page and come up with more methods for drumming "our way." Greg also explains how drummers like Joe Morello , John Bonham and others influenced his own development as a musician by generously passing along their insights to us. This is a rich, fun, challenging, and friendly book.
