Writing Under Pressure: The Quick Writing Process (Oxford Paperbacks), by Sanford Kaye

Most writing is done under pressure. An executive has to produce a three-page position paper by tomorrow at nine. A department head suddenly has to write a one-page action memo by noon. A graduate student has a twenty-page research paper due in a week. Yet, while most students and professionals write under pressure--with limited time, limited space, and a supervisor or instructor to please--few approach the task systematically.
In Writing Under Pressure, Sanford Kaye, a renowned expert on the subject, presents a system he calls the Quick Writing Process (QWP) that focuses on real-world writing tasks and demonstrates how to produce the clearest, most honest, most powerful work possible under the constraints of time and space. A writing instructor with twenty-five years' experience teaching students and professionals in business and government, Kaye tells writers how to budget their time and how to use this time efficiently.
Exploring particular writing situations in which QWP can be applied to make the most of what the writer knows, Kaye discusses the process of taking exams, focusing on how instructors select questions and evaluate essays. He also considers writing in business and government, featuring an insightful analysis of a memo written by Colonel Oliver North. This memo highlights one of the most important issues writers in business and government face: whether to write the truth as they see it or simply what their bosses want to hear. Presenting a wealth of such examples, Kaye reveals how to break through stifling organizational codes in order to write memos and position papers that count.
While most guides to writing ignore the constraints of time and space, Writing Under Pressure tackles these problems head on, making it an essential reference for students, business professionals, government officials, or anyone else faced with a difficult writing assignment that has to be done now.

Review
"A useful system for getting started and getting finished."--Anne M. Durbin, Bryn Mawr College

"More useful than any comparable writer's handbook for the kind of writing that most students actually have to do."--Paul Teverow, Missouri Southern State College

"Upper division students invariably say that this is the most useful they have encountered in college on how to write."--Dr. Bill M. Donovan, Loyola College in Maryland

"A good book which I will order as an optional reading."Eric Graig, Queens College

"Will be enormously helpful to many different kinds of students. It directly and engagingly addresses real writers coping with real tasks, and presents practical solutions to common difficulties....Kaye avoids the egotism and artificiality that plague many who counsel beginning writers; he frees his reader to write independently, responsibly, and effectively in all circumstances."--Prudence L. Steiner, Director, Expository Writing Program, Harvard University Extension School

"This book tells us not just how to write, but how to live....[Kaye's] writer is a jujitsu artist who turns hostile, external pressure into force of feeling and expression."--Joseph G. Mayer, Principal Software Writer, Wang Laboratories, Inc.

"This is the best kind of writing book. Reading it lifts a veil from your eyes as it makes easily understandable those 'hidden' rules we've all occasionally followed, but have rarely if ever verbalized....A time-saver for anybody who writes under pressure."--Luis Hurtado-Sanchez, Integrated Office Systems Manager, Hewlett-Packard Company

"Kaye has done a great service to those of us...who must produce clear, persuasive, and action oriented writing as an essential part of our jobs....A useful and entertaining book."--Thomas J. Kelly, Vice President, IRM, Grumman Corporation

An attempt to create a formula for writing
By Jerry Saperstein
I can understand Sanford Kaye's objective: provide a program that take the angst out of having to write in high pressure environments, such as a test or presentation at the office. That the author is an academic and his target is primarily students skews this work in a direction it shouldn't really go - and Kaye's sallies into the politics of his day doesn't help matters.

Kaye drops nuggets like "Your goal is a process which allows you to write efficiently and confidently for a reader whom you have placed in an appropriate relationship to your words, and whose questions you have anticipated within the planned structure of your essay, memo, or exam." I can think of a half-dozen ways to express Kaye's meaning in an understandable form, not swaddled with academic window dressing that chokes the meaning out of words. "Conscious, careful selection, whether the representation is a word, symbol, or underlying metaphor, is crucial to both power and clarity in prose." Muddled way of suggesting that you understand the language and choose your words carefully.

Statements like this make up the bulk of this book. The advice is good, but not exceptional. The writing style is dry and dull. The excursions into the politics of the day back then are meaningless to contemporary readers as they were probably at the time.

For the writer who reacts adversely to time pressure, there are many other more generalized books on writing which do the job better.

Truly humane gem on writing, politics, society
By A Customer
If revolutionaries were also great teachers, or great teacher also revolutionaries, they would write books like this.
For those seeking help with their writing, no book will do a better job. This is a book about writing that truly recognizes the profound difficulties that everyone, beginner or published author, encounters in trying to make what they say clear, and in trying to clarify for themselves what they want to say. It addresses these problems by cutting through all the myths about writing and gets to the heart of the matter by giving you a surprisingly practical technique for digging out the things you really want to say and for giving them a crisp, articulate, and elegant form. Use this book and writing really will get easier and more fulfilling, and right away. You won't believe how easy it is to say what you want to say.
But this isn't just a book about writing -- at least not if you think writing is just about putting words on the page. Kaye also tells us something about writing that few have seen before -- something so elementary that once you see it, you can't believe you (and everyone else) ever missed it.
Boiled down, it is this: the great struggle to express that makes so many of us so insecure really is, in part, a handicap imposed on us by the culture in which we are raised, educated, and shaped. That culture, Kaye suggests, wants us mute. Voiceless, we will not rock the boat, question the way things are, or articulate alternatives. To this end, it tears us down from the moment we start trying to express ourselves, teaching us time and time again that our ideas make no sense and that our efforts at expression are embarassingly clumsy. Ashamed, we shut up, and stop trying to tell the world about our insights, our passions, or ourselves. And unable to say what we wish we could say, we gradually forget that we even wanted to say it.
This is a profoundly humane account of the struggles we all have writing. It tells us what few of us would dare believe on our own -- that the difficulty we have making our ideas understood isn't really about our own intelligence or artistic capacity or charisma, but about this culture's relentless effort to shame us into quiet conformity.
Proufoundly humane, this view is also therefore radical. Not like Stalin or Castro, though, for it doesn't ask us to sacrifice ourselves for some ideal. No, what's really radical about this radical view is that it reaches out to help us. It helps us express ourselves, and thus empowers us.
Kaye wants to change the world, but he knows that for the world to change, YOU have to be able to say what you want to say. God knows where that leaves him, but for you the results are all good: this book REALLY does want you to find your voice, and it goes after it with both a teacher's touch and a revolutionary's zeal.
God knows, its helped me.

This is the Writing book you want on your shelf
By A Customer
When I first got into college, I had absolutely no idea how to
write. I had written papers in high school, yet it had always been an agonizing process. As a result, I dreaded every paper assignment, and put off writing until the last minute. Then, one day, in the midst of such procrastination, I discovered this book on the library's shelf.
Shelved between two books on grammar, this book looked like another long-winded treatise on sentence construction. Yet after opening the book, I was pleasantly surprised.
Sanford Kaye's book, Writing Under Pressure, puts forth an interesting, well thought out strategy for writing papers. Through a case study, and then specific applications, he outlines his strategy in a clear, easily understandable way that is immediately applicable. Yet this is not this book's main strength. Kaye clearly loves writing, and he communicates this in a way that makes the reader feel the same way. Now, this is the book I turn to whenever I feel overwhelmed by a writing task. So if you are looking for a book on writing, or even if you are not, you cannot do better than Sanford Kaye's Writing Under Pressure.

  • Sampling of the work of Christophe von Hohenberg, an artist of the lens who documented the vibrant New York City in the 1970s and 80s
  • This book reflects 20 years in pictures that bring to life a forgotten era
  • Style and creativity ruled with energy and excitement in New York for two whole decades

"What came to mind when looking at Christophe von Hohenberg's book was... loved the scrapbook format and thought it was by far the best way to show photographs and the life of the photographer." Etheleen Staley - Staley-Wise Gallery

The 1970s and 80s in New York were a dazzling age. Since the 1920s in Paris, the world had not seen such a cultural movement. Von Hohenberg lived and photographed this period, when the giants of fashion, art and society rubbed elbows with drag queens and addicts in clubs like the legendary Studio 54. This historic "time capsule" contains portraits of personalities like Allen Ginsberg, Julian Schnabel and Cornelia Guest, Robert F. Kennedy Junior and Britney Spears, to name just a few. Some are no longer with us, and some reign as icons of the century. With texts and handwritten letters from acclaimed American writers like Jay McInerney, Candace Bushnell, Anthony Haden-Guest, Michael Gross, and Bob Colacello

A Planet Well Worth Visiting
By kingharris
Von Hohenberg's latest tome is a really great snapshot (literally) of what NYC was during the 70's - 90's. His portfolio captures the mixture of people from ALL different echelons who interacted then.
And there is something charming and intimate about his handwritten comments throughout - which is also echoed in the physical size of the book - a cozy, enchanting little read.

Kind of trashy and self-serving. Still, a "decent" record of a particular moment in NYC madness. The emphasis is on the beautiful people, their clubbing, posing and self-destruction. Not redeeming in any way but a select, compact record of those with money, self importance and, preferably European connections.

None of these Diseases
By Dr. Alan L. Gillen
The classic None of these Diseases has been updated once again. The primary author is over 102 years old and shares from his vast experience both as a medical missionary, college physician, and centurion. Dr. McMillan shares a unique perspective on healthy living and how the Bible gave insight into sources of infectious disease to generations of people starting with Moses until present day. The present edition has been updated by his physician grandson and includes new facts and findings in medical science confirming what the Bible said over 3000 years agao. It takes a fascinating look at how medical science is coming to many of the same conclusions about healthy living that God revealed to his people in biblical times. This book is used in my microbiology class (along with a standard microbiology text and lab manual) for nursing and premed students at a Christian College (in FL). Many students over the past three years have made positive comments about this book (w/previous editions)that provided them with vital information on issues that face the current generation, including AIDS, STDs, stress, infectious disease prevention, and handwashing that they had trouble understanding from their standard textbook. It is written at a level that a layperson can understand, yet has deep insight into disease prevention techniques. I would highly recommend it.

Everybody should read this book!
By T. M. Kreuger
This book really could change America! The way we eat, the way we live has serious health consequences, therefore higher doctors bills etc. This book will help you to cut through so much of the rubbish being written about diet and health, and help you to set a lifestyle that is healthy. Forget fad diets this is the way to go, not just for losing weight but fro every aspect of healthy living.
Also goes a long way to proving that God really knew what He was doing all those 1000's of years ago, as science plays catch up with Biblical revelation.

None of these Diseases: The Bibles Health Secrets for the 21
By Sylvia K. McClintick
The original book written in 1963 and 1984 was a wonderful example of explaining how the Bible can be used to help us live healthier.
This book, however, is so full of sermons and posturing, that it is difficult to see where the Bible is being quoted.
We purchased this book and after reading half of it, decided to purchase the original book (through the used books section of Amazon.com) and now wish we had the option of returning this book and only keeping the original book. The original book is really a great read and extremely helpful.

The Beauty of Physics: Patterns, Principles, and Perspectives, by A. R. P. Rau

The beauty of physics lies in its coherence in terms of a few fundamental concepts and principles. Even physicists have occasion to marvel at the overarching reach of basic principles and their ability to account for features stretching from the microscopic sub-atomic world to the cosmological expanses of the Universe. While mathematics is its natural language, physics is mostly about patterns, connections, and relations between objects and phenomena, and it is this aspect that is emphasized in this book.

Since science tries to connect phenomena that at first sight appear widely different, while boiling them down to a small set of essential principles and laws, metaphor and analogy pervade our subject. Consider the pendulum, its swing from one extreme to the other often invoked in social or economic contexts. In molecular vibrations, such as in the CO2 molecule, the quantum motions of electrons and nuclei are metaphorically the pendulums. In electromagnetic radiation, including the visible light we observe, there are not even any concrete material particles, only electric and magnetic fields executing simple harmonic motion. But, to a physicist, they are all "just a pendulum".

The selection of topics reflects the author's own four-decade career in research physics and his resultant perspective on the subject. While aimed primarily at physicists, including junior students, this book also addresses other readers who are willing to think with symbols and simple algebra in understanding the physical world around us. Each chapter, on themes such as dimensions, transformations, symmetries, or maps, begins with simple examples accessible to all while connecting them later to more sophisticated realizations in more advanced topics of physics.

Excellent brief presentation of numerous topics in biochem
By A Customer
The book is a very good overview of biochemical processes, covering many significant topics. Detail level is moderate -- not as detailed as an indepth study, which I found a bit disappointing in topics that were of special interest to me, but on the other hand the information is fairly complete for review or introductory purposes. Lots of diagrams supplement the text, and most provide an extra illumination of the topic, which I appreciated. Topics cover: cells and structure, amino acids and proteins, enzymes, antibodies, membranes, DNA and RNA (which could have been left out of this book, since it is covered in much more detail in the Instant Notes in Molecular Biology volume), protein synthesis, recombinant DNA, carbohydrate/lipid/nitrogen metabolism, respiration (Krebs Cycle), and a final chapter that covers muscle contraction, nerve conduction and neurotransmitters -- although the info here is too brief -- and collagen. Viruses are also covered, altho again they are covered in more detail in Instant Notes in Microbiology. I'm using this book along with with Biochemistry by Champe (great illustrations -- more info on the biological processes) to get a basic understanding of biochem. This book could be a great reference for a student/professional review or for a quick look-up of processes or concepts. Brief mention is made, also, of medical conditions resulting from errors, mutations, or deficiencies in the topics covered, but I would like to have seen more of this type of information (e.g., the realistic consequences). Otherwise, very pleased with the book, both information contained in the text and the layout of the diagrams.

Great supplement for instructor or student of biochemistry
By A Customer
As an instructor of introductory biochemistry, I have found this book to be an invaluable supplement when preparing lectures. The general topics found in any 1st year biochemistry text are neatly grouped in 14 broad sections which are again grouped in several concise but informative subsections which deal with very specific topics. Each specific topic is neatly organized and contains the essential information and figures needed to understand that specific material. Although there are no photographs or color diagrams, the line diagrams are very clear and to the point. I encourage both teacher and student (especially students preparing for cumulative exams such as the biochemistry GRE) to check out this title.

Behold, Brian Switzer's Magnum Opus -- The Jazz Deck
By Edward Balen
I collect playing cards alongside my musical studies. This is the most innovative deck of musical playing cards I have ever owned. The Jazz Deck by Brian Switzer is just what the name says, a textbook in a box of cards.

The colorful cards give you practice tips, a quick start with enharmonics, meaning two names for the same chord. The next four cards give you instructions on how to sound great over a major seventh, minor seventh flat five, minor seventh and dominant seventh. Each of these cards tells you what kind of chord to play over each, and which note to build your chord on. Each kind of chord is color coded, minor sevenths are red, major sevenths are blue, minor seventh flat fives are yellow, and dominant sevenths are green.

The next part of the deck is grouped by color code and chord type. Twelve blue Major seventh chord cards, twelve red Minor seventh chord cards, twelve green dominant seven chord cards, and twelve minor seven flat five chord cards. Each chord card has the chord written in a circle in simple form. On the back of each card, the chord is spelled out in note name and numbered degree form. The color coded notes in the middle are the notes you play to sound great, and the chord name of these notes is labeled in parentheses. On the bottom of each card, scale degrees are given by number and key name. Relative major and minor keys are indicated on the major and minor cards. Static chords are spelled out in note name on the dominant seventh cards. The last card in the deck has all twelve major scales on it. The flipside of the major scales deck has Brian Switzer's hand drawn trumpet logo.

In short, this deck of cards is a wealth of musical information in a deck of cards. Even though it initially is marketed as a Jazz Deck, the information on the cards bridges the entire world of musical genres. From one musician to another, if you want to arm yourself with information, education mixed with a few witty quotes from well known people, this is the deck of cards for you.

Jazz Deck - Great Product, Very Useful
By Marcus A. Noel
I got alerted to The Jazz Deck by an email from the Jamey Aebersold Jazzbooks network. I've made some minor attempts at something like this, and had been searching for some perforated card stock. When I saw the Jazz Deck, I thought "Problem Solved ... Maybe". I checked for availablity on Amazon and decided to order from there.

On arrival, I was pleased with the quality of material. It's as sturdy as regular Playing Cards and the Print Quality is Professional.
Cards are color coded by chord quality(ie. Blue for Major7 Chords, Red - Minor7, Green for 7th Chords, & Yellow for Minor7b5 Chords ).

There are also 6 cards with brief tutorial/suggestion material.
Some may feel it's not comprehensive enough, and the suggested chord tones for soloing may not apply to all genres. However, there is still enough stuff there in concise format to create your own useful exercies for improving your own 'On-The-Spot' recall of whatever components of music theory you feel helps you become a better player & improvisor.

The one thing I might suggest improving is the case. It's hard plastic, but the top doesn't securely attach the bottom ... so it opens easily and the cards can easily tumble out by accident. I'm looking for a more secure case.

Overall ... The Jazz Deck is a great product.

Brilliant!
By Jonathan Orara
The JazzDeck is an awesome tool for understanding music/jazz theory. It's cool to have a visual guide showing you which notes will sound the best and their intervallic relationship to the chord you're playing over. Great concept and full of useful information. Flawless transaction.

Killing Reagan: The Violent Assault That Changed a Presidency, by Bill O'Reilly, Martin Dugard

From the bestselling team of Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard comes Killing Reagan, a page-turning epic account of the career of President Ronald Reagan that tells the vivid story of his rise to power -- and the forces of evil that conspired to bring him down.

Just two months into his presidency, Ronald Reagan lay near death after a gunman's bullet came within inches of his heart. His recovery was nothing short of remarkable -- or so it seemed. But Reagan was grievously injured, forcing him to encounter a challenge that few men ever face. Could he silently overcome his traumatic experience while at the same time carrying out the duties of the most powerful man in the world?

Told in the same riveting fashion as Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, and Killing Patton, Killing Reagan reaches back to the golden days of Hollywood, where Reagan found both fame and heartbreak, up through the years in the California governor's mansion, and finally to the White House, where he presided over boom years and the fall of the Iron Curtain. But it was John Hinckley Jr.'s attack on him that precipitated President Reagan's most heroic actions. In Killing Reagan, O'Reilly and Dugard take readers behind the scenes, creating an unforgettable portrait of a great man operating in violent times.

A Disappointing and Suspect Portrayal
By Mark E. Quartullo
As an “O’Reilly Factor” and “Killing…” books fan, I was looking forward to the latest entry of the series that has somewhat reignited a degree of historic interest among many in the “historically-challenged” US population. By spotlighting one of our greatest presidents – and written by a seemingly objective conservative pundit who I believed would ensure fair treatment – I assumed it would stand as a credible addition to the voluminous scholarship on President Reagan.

As difficult as this is to write, I can only say that I was wrong. To my surprise and disappointment, it is perhaps the most factually distorted, negatively skewed, and misleading portrayal I have read on one of our greatest and most influential presidents.

Like the previous books in the series, “Killing Reagan” is succinct and pointed in its assertions, with a rigorous pacing that brings it in at approximately 289 pages. Yet, despite its efficient prose, the book fails in the following areas: 1) Several factual inaccuracies (either by omission of key caveats or the appropriate context); b) “Tabloid-fodder” assertions or rumors ill-sourced or assumed (but not proven) to be true; c) Selection of numerous events designed to reflect negatively on Reagan; d) Unproven negative and arbitrary opinions of Reagan and his capabilities are littered throughout.

For example, I spotted over 30 factual errors, debatable points, or suspiciously sourced “tabloid-like” assertions that immediately undercut the book’s credibility. In addition, there were several anecdotes cited that required caveat or “the full story,” which is something O’Reilly prides himself as always providing but fails to do here. These include:

- Assertion that the Reagan campaign “cheated” by having “stolen” Carter’s briefing notes for their only debate in 1980 (P. 8). The book openly speculates that it was Nancy who stole them, which is unsupported. Also, O’Reilly could have mentioned that it was also revealed that the Carter camp had acquired an insider analysis on RR’s debate preparation from a mole inside of the campaign, pretty much evening things out. Of course, although fairly common in all political campaigns, neither course was ethical but they were also not illegal (in a word, that’s “politics”). Yet, only telling one side is factual inaccuracy by omission, implying that RR somehow “cheated” his way to victory in the debate and perhaps the election.

- Characterizations of numerous sexual escapades, alleged extra-marital affairs in 1952 (which prevented him from being at the birth of his daughter, Patricia Ann; P. 49), and a rumored one in 1968 as Governor (P. 83) – allegations exaggerated or never proven. Yet, the authors write as though they are factual, again negatively depicting RR’s character.

- Repeated assertions of the Reagan’s obsession with Astrology and Nancy’s erratic personality, which were cited in Don Regan’s memoir, “For The Record,” and Kitty Kelley’s “Nancy Reagan: The Unauthorized Biography” – which are both known for their exaggerated and tabloid-like attacks on particularly Nancy Reagan. “Killing Reagan” provides that RR himself also took Astrology seriously, even though neither Regan, Kelley or any other source has claimed this. Also, due to the fact that both authors had an axe to grind, using either source as credible casts great doubts about the validity of the book’s assertions.

- In several passages, Reagan is described as “not a great intellect”, “passive,” “stubborn,” “disengaged,” “puts little effort into fatherhood,” “has his good days and bad days,” “in permanent decline,” “visibly frail,” “naps frequently,” “delegates much power to Nancy,” “spends hours during the day watching television reruns,” and other swipes that amount to little more than petty slights, or arbitrary and/or parroted opinions. They are also conveyed absent of any positive behavior or characteristics, creating a wholly negative depiction (see P. 83).

- Regarding Iran-Contra, O’Reilly writes: “Although two key members of the conspiracy …North…and…Weinberger, made it clear Reagan knew what was happening, no charges were ever filed against the president” (P. 224). This is not true. While Reagan knew of the sales to Iran (which he admitted), no evidence has ever been found that proves RR knew about the diversion of funds. Also, neither Poindexter, North, or Weinberger ever testified that RR actually knew of this.

- Erroneous and/or incomplete depiction of RR and the Falklands War (PP. 199-211). The authors' message here is that RR opposed the British re-taking of the Falklands and repeatedly tried to convince Thatcher to abandon the effort because Argentina was supporting US operations against Cuban and Nicaraguan Communists in Central America. Yet, the authors fail to mention that Reagan actually did covertly support the British effort by providing USAF resources on nearby Ascension Island (for aerial operations), Sidewinder missiles, logistics materials and other support. Thatcher specifically thanked RR for this in one phone conversation in late June 1982. Yet, the authors’ depiction leaves one with the impression that RR stubbornly opposed Britain and was later beaten down by Thatcher for it (PP. 208-211). It also makes no mention of how RR deftly towed a fine line between both Argentina and Britain, ensuring their future support. Again, a relative positive turned into a negative.

- The authors catalog every gaffe, embarrassing moment, and perceived lapse of Reagan and his presidency without mentioning the many good moments. These would include his comforting words on the Challenger disaster, Reykjavik summit, and seminal speeches from the 40th D-Day anniversary, Notre Dame, British Parliament, SDI, “Evil Empire” speech, and many others. Rather, O’Reilly prefers to provide significant space to Iran-Contra, the potential invocation of the 25th Amendment due to Reagan’s suspected “senility,” and even August 1984’s “we’re doing all we can” tongue-tied incident at the Ranch. They seemed determined to merely hand-wave his successes (P. 224), yet spend nearly the entire book citing anything resembling a failure or foible.

There are other examples but the overarching message is this: “Killing Reagan” is a pointedly negative portrait of a great president and American legend. Their depiction is almost “bi-polar,” simultaneously portraying a dubious, semi-senile blunderer who somehow magically comes to life when pursing the destruction of Communism. O’Reilly’s Reagan is a physically and mentally deteriorating actor and mediocrity whose wife and staff are secretly running the country; whose brilliance is sporadic and ever decreasing due to the onset of Alzheimer’s and/or dementia-like symptoms – something never proven and pointedly denied by RR’s doctors and everyone who worked with him daily while President. Yet, this doesn’t prevent O’Reilly from citing it as credible and/or a fact.

Martin Dugard apparently led the research on this, and sourcing selections provides clues as to why the book is so negative and “tabloid-like.” In other terms, citing severely inaccurate or skewed sources like Kitty Kelly’s “Nancy Reagan…,” James Clarke’s “Defining Danger…,” and Mayer and McManus’ “Landslide: The Unmaking of the President” (among others) automatically calls into question his intentions of getting it right. Based on this, the book inevitably skews negative when their content is adopted and expanded as they are throughout the book.

The radical Reagan-haters of the L3 (i.e., Leftist Liar Lowlifes) continue to lie about RR in a failing attempt to somehow diminish or “delegitimize” his presidency for their own ideological purposes. They “cherry-pick” facets that benefit their arguments without ever proving their claims and/or providing the full story. And, because they cannot factually win the debate on RR’s legacy, they routinely resort to personal slander to marginalize both Reagan and those who would defend him. Dissent is not tolerated in their crusade to re-write history to discredit the success of opposing ideas.

Thus, good scholarship is essential to ensuring that the facts of history are not lost to politically-motivated historical revisionism. Unfortunately, this book adds to the increasingly discredited Reagan-hater attacks. By trying not to “lionize” Reagan, O’Reilly and Dugard diminish him and his legacy with continuous negativity and veiled personal attacks throughout.

“Killing Reagan” is the biggest publishing disappointment of the year and should be regarded for what it truly is: the “historical” equivalent of a fast food meal. Despite its initially attractive qualities, it is wholly unsatisfying and even destructive to one’s sense of fulfillment and taste. The title more or less describes what it inadvertently does or tries to do to Reagan and his legacy.

Hatchet Job
By No BS guy
This is certainly the worst of O'Reilly's increasingly disappoint "Killing" series. First of all, Reagan didn't die. Secondly, this badly written book must have been ghost written. It is poorly done. Third, as is happening more and more with the "Killing" books, it is all back story. Most of the early part of the book is devoted to biographies of other folks like Nixon and Ford. Too much time is spent on Reagan's not very exciting acting career. You are more than 2/3rds of the way through the book before Reagan is even elected president. It portrays Reagan's entire life in a negative light. This is a weak book by an increasingly weak author(or a poor ghostwriter).

You are better off reading many other books on Reagan, than this
By wutanglen
I am a big fan of the O'Reilly Factor show, so I am not writing this not so good review with any bias against Bill O'Reilly. However, Bill O'Reilly tends to be a bit disappointing. I have in the past fallen prey to a book or two of his that was simply a reprint of interviews I had seen on the Factor.

The Pro's of the Book: It is written in a style that makes it a quick and fairly entertaining read. Even though I have a pretty in depth history background, I am not one of these people that has problems with popular history. There is absolutely nothing wrong with popular history, and if it were not for popular history like Walter Lord or Bruce Catton, I would never have become so interested in history. So, if I was someone who knew little about Reagan or just wanted a beach read, this book is ok in that respect. Also, it was very interesting when it did go into some detail on John Hinckley JR, there I read stuff I had not read previously. Unfortunately the book surprisingly went into not much detain on Hinckley or the actually assassination.

Unfortunately, this book had many con's for me. First off, for a fairly conservative commentator on what was once a conservative network, I was surprised at how anti-Reagan this book came off to me. This book portrayed Reagan as suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease much earlier than more scholarly and more recent works have. Also, the book was very gossipy, with a lot of time spent on alleged affairs and relationships of Reagan, again stuff that I had not read or seen in any recent and more scholarly in depth studies of Reagan. The book dwelled well too much on this type of stuff, which would have been more appropriate in a book on Clinton, LBJ or JFK. If these allegations were true, why was it not in other more reliable studies of Reagan? Also, the book really does not spend much time on the actually assassination attempt or enough on Hinckley. However, we get several pages on the British war in the Falklands, a map of Chappaquiddick, and a detailed map on where in California the Reagan ranch was. Just did not seem to make sense to me. Also, not that Nancy Reagan is perfect, but the book seemed a bit overboard in criticism of her.

It is not that this book is terrible, it is entertaining and a quick read however, for the 16.42$ you can do much better on Reagan. First off, there are many great collections of Reagan's writings including: A Life in Letters, Reagan's Path to Victory, and even the very touching letters he wrote to Nancy. For in depth, almost exhausting study of Reagan, Steven Hayward's Age of Reagan books are the best. After reading either volume you will know just about all there is about Reagan. However, O'reilly would probably point out those books are for pinheads and regular folks are not going to read that stuff. And that may be true, but there are also some wonderful popular histories of Reagan, that are very readable and filled with more accurate information and are probably more reliable. For the assassination itself: Rawhide Down is an incredible book, not a long book at all, but what a story about what did happen in the assassination and what the secret service did to save him and how the doctor's saved the President. This is the book Killing Reagan should have been but is not. Craig Shirley has written two easy to read but highly detailed books on Reagan's 1976 and 1980 elections, top notch stuff. Finally, while again I paid 16$ at Sam's for the Killing Reagan book and got a map of Reagan's house in California, for 2$ more at Sam's I bought HW Brands recent Reagan: The Life, which while not a perfect book, is a fantastic one volume summary of Reagan's life. HW Brands who is I think moderately liberal, presents a way more favorable assessment of Reagan than conservative commentator O'Reilly. Again, if you want in depth, read Hayward or the primary sources, if you want popular history you are way better off reading the HW Brands book than this one. Killing Reagan is something you are better off taking to the library and reading at the beach or while you kids has soccer practice.

The Nix: A novel, by Nathan Hill

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“The Nix is a mother-son psychodrama with ghosts and politics, but it’s also a tragicomedy about anger and sanctimony in America. . . .  Nathan Hill is a maestro.” —John Irving

From the suburban Midwest to New York City to the 1968 riots that rocked Chicago and beyond, The Nix explores—with sharp humor and a fierce tenderness—the resilience of love and home, even in times of radical change.

It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: she’s facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuel’s help.

To save her, Samuel will have to embark on his own journey, uncovering long-buried secrets about the woman he thought he knew, secrets that stretch across generations and have their origin all the way back in Norway, home of the mysterious Nix. As he does so, Samuel will confront not only Faye’s losses but also his own lost love, and will relearn everything he thought he knew about his mother, and himself.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of September 2016: The Nix is a surprising novel that you didn’t know you were waiting for until you start reading. At its center is Samuel Andresen-Anderson, a failed writer and increasingly apathetic college professor, who gets a second chance at literary fame from the most unlikely source—the mother who abandoned him as a child. The American public is up in arms about a rather absurd crime that Samuel’s mother committed against an obnoxious politician. While Sam is shocked and surprised to learn the whereabouts of his estranged mother, he also realizes it’s the chance of a lifetime to tap into the zeitgeist with some choice tidbits about her, if he can write it before media A.D.D. sets in. But in order to write the book that will revive him, Samuel is forced to dig into her life, and he discovers a completely different version of the woman he thought he knew; it turns out he’s not the only one who’s life is carved out of traumatic events. Nathan Hill is incredibly perceptive, as in this, which I can’t stop thinking about: “The things we love the most are the most disfiguring. Such is our greed for them.” Hill has created a brilliant junction of mother-son saga and comic satire about our self-righteous and obsessive society. This is a big, clever novel that wraps itself around you until you never want to leave. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

The Nix is hugely entertaining and unfailingly smart, and the author seems incapable of writing a pedestrian sentence or spinning a boring story. . . . [A] supersize and audacious novel of American misadventure.” —Teddy Wayne, The New York Times Book Review

This is something special. A great big read from a great big talent with a great big heart.
By RobynJC
Samuel is an underachieving assistant professor of literature at a nothing college outside Chicago who dislikes his students, spends way too much time playing an online fantasy game, got a huge advance for a novel he never wrote, and is pining for the girl he loved when he was eleven. His life is stalled out big time, but he is dragged out of stasis when his estranged mother, who abandoned him when he was eleven and has never been heard from since, makes national headlines for throwing rocks at a Presidential candidate - she is the Packer Attacker! Through a ridiculous series of events, Samuel is tasked with writing his mother's life story, and is forced to investigate her life since leaving him. The Nix is the story of how mother and son came to where they are -- and where they might go from here.

But really, this basic plot description does not begin to do this book justice. Nathan Hill has a dazzling imagination, and the feats of writing that he performs are an absolute joy to experience. He writes one chapter from the POV of a gaming addict, an internal stream of consciousness in which the character makes elaborate plans to quit gaming, but talks himself out of it. This is ten pages, one paragraph, and it is absolutely mesmerizing -- funny and insightful and sad, about the stories we tell ourselves. Another chapter is just a conversation between Samuel and the lawyer who is representing his mother, nothing but dialogue, and it is hysterical. Another chapter is a Choose Your Own Adventure mini-bookl explaining how Samuel's relationship with a violin prodigy came unraveled, because Samuel does not choose wisely. Another chapter is...you get the picture.

The story of Samuel and his mother is a jumping-off point for Mr. Hill to write about a huge range of things: let's see, he covers second-rate higher education, gaming addicts, the ravenous news media, music prodigies, child abuse, child abandonment, thwarted love, the 1960s counter-cultural revolution, Allan Ginsberg, Walter Cronkite -- at one point, no joke, there is a sequence inside the head of Walter Cronkite where he imagines himself as a bird flying above the Chicago riots... and I still haven't skimmed the surface of all the things this book is really about.

And if I have a criticism, that's what it is. This book is about so many things, it is so wildly ambitious and imagined, that at times it seems to get a bit out of control. Around the time Walter Cronkite was imagining himself as a bird, I was thinking, hmm, a little editing might have helped some. Reading The Nix feels a bit like watching a wildly talented thoroughbred run -- and win -- its first race. You see the immense beauty of the animal, the strength, the speed, it easily outpaces the rest of the field, you know you're at the beginning of something special. Yes, the horse is a little wild, a little undisciplined, maybe veers around the track a bit, maybe tires at the end, but my gosh. You want to turn to everyone around you and say "Did you SEE that?"

And one last thing. So many books these days are being written with a lot of technique, but they're lacking in heart. What makes this book special, to me, is that Mr. Hill's heart is as generous as his talent. He writes fantastic sentences, he has astonishing craft, but beyond that, he has true empathy, compassion and hope, He sees the insanity of the world, but he also has hope for our future. And I have tremendous hope for his.

Favorite of 2016 So Far
By Brett Benner
Okay so I'm hanging out on a limb here to say that Nathan Hill has written arguably the best book of at least the summer, if not the year. Big, expansive, and terribly funny he satires everything from politics, to the Internet, to online gaming, and the media. Spanning fifty plus years the story centers on Samuel Andresen-Anderson, an unhappy college professor, struggling writer, and player of 'World of Elfquest'-a vaguely veiled, 'World of Warcraft' game. With his novel deadline now passed, and a publisher ready to sue for breach of contract, he desperately ends up turning to the one person who abandoned him over thirty years ago and is now at the center of the media firestorm for assaulting a conservative governor-his Mother. Despite Hill's book taking place in the sixties before the Democratic convention and in 2011 before the Republican one, Hill's commentary can't help but feel painfully relevant to today such as: "it's no secret that the great American pastime is no longer baseball. Now it's sanctimony", and when Walter Cronkite is watching the riots taking place in Chicago before the Democractic convention, 'Anyone who thinks television can bring the nation together to have a real dialogue and begin to understand one another with empathy and compassion is suffering a great delusion.' Hill is being compared to Irving and I think that's a legitimate claim, both in his absurdist humor and his touching way he threads the delicate and complicated lines between parents and their children. It's not just a great first book, but a great book period.

Don't Kill Your Best Writers with Senseless Hype. (Marketing people!)
By Beverly Jackson
Wonderful writing; terrible hype from publishers. Can only disappoint a reader. It was a good first book, but the market is insane. I like this writer and will read him again, but as an older person who would NEVER call Walter Cronkite (our GOD of the 60's) "Ol' Cronkite", the naivete of young writers trying to "go big" without the experience is laughable and a little sad. He got some of it right (the heart of the matter) but the depth of the angst of the times was definitely not there, and how could it be? He wasn't either.
