Very informative and didactic. Videos are also very explicite. I had kindle version.
The bad thing is that in the book, there are QR codes to access the videos instead of links that can be accesed by clicking on them. But there is the online version that is very good, and eliminate that problem.

Missing the last 3 chapters???!!!!

I am in a FNP program and this was a textbook required and provided in an online format. I found it to be helpful and well organized so I ordered it to have a hard copy. Loving the ease I can reference back to things and highlight uber important things. Then this week as I went to read my assignment, I discovered I am short the last 3 chapters. What is up with that???

Directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, and written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the film is based on three of the original comic books: The Crab with the Golden Claws (1941), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943), and Red Rackham's Treasure (1944).[5] Spielberg first acquired rights to produce a film based upon the Adventures of Tintin series following Hergé's death in 1983, and re-optioned them in 2002. Filming was due to begin in October 2008 for a 2010 release, but release was delayed to 2011 after Universal opted out of producing the film with Paramount, who provided $30 million on pre-production. Sony chose to co-produce the films. The delay resulted in Thomas Sangster, who had been cast as Tintin, departing from the project. Producer Peter Jackson, whose company Weta Digital is providing the computer animation, intends to direct a sequel. Spielberg and Jackson also hope to co-direct a third film.[6] --Wikipedia

About the Author
Herge (Georges Remi) was born in Brussels in 1907. Over the course of 54 years he completed 23 albums of The Adventures of Tintin series, which is now considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comics series of all time. With translations published in over 80 languages, more than 230 million copies sold worldwide and a Hollywood movie to its name, Tintin dominates the Comics and Graphic Novels chart even today. Sadly, Herge died in 1983, leaving his 24th album, Tintin and Alph-Art, unfinished, but his hero continues to be one of the most iconic characters in both adult and children's fiction.

Drawing helps

This was one of several drawing books I considered as support material for a beginning drawing class I was recently called on to teach at a local state university. So much of drawing becomes intuitive after several years, that a good text by another instructor can bring those second-nature drawing decisions to the surface for both self-examination, and instructive help for the student. Though there is another book being used for the class, I found the excellent mix of contemporary and old master drawings throughout this volume to be especially nice for examples to students, and the exercises clear and useful.

I had not realized how long ago this was published, but recognized some of the exercises from my own studies from a few years ago, not knowing they were from this particular book. How many ways can you teach drawing? There are many variations, but most revolve around leading the student to trust their eyes and draw what they really see, and there are many such encouraging exercises in "Experimental Drawing", as well as a variety of techniques for manipulating the drawing media and constructing interesting compositions. I would not consider this a complete drawing course by any means, but it offers a variety of possible explorations that greatly benefit the study of the foundation of art -- drawing.

I love the book. I am a professional artist and I want to explore more in experimental drawing. This is the book to have, it proposes lots of different exercises and challenges to improve your skills and try out new forms of expression. I would not suggest it for a beginner though.

A great book...relates the theory to real problems!

I really enjoyed this book, and I feel that I have a pretty good understanding of the subject. The book teaches you enough theory to understand the concepts, but doesn't get bogged down in a lot of mathematics. It's easy to read, full of good example problems, and has answers at the back of the book for every other problem at the end of the chapters so you can check your homework solutions. There are worked application example problems at the end of every chapter, and application problems in the homework sets too. The appendix has all the thermal propeties you need to work the homework problems, and there are even curve fit equations of liquids and gases that you can use in computer programs for convection problems. There were a few errors in the book, but they weren't serious. I think that a person could even learn heat transfer on his own without a professor if he had this book, but it always helps to have someone there to explain it when you have questions. I highly recommend this book!

Affordable way to get a great book!

I bought this book for a class, but I am really enjoying it! It's well written and informative and I want to hang on to it after class is over so I can apply it to my own life and work. That said, this book is PRICY...so I was thrilled to be offered a loose-leaf option! It saved me a bunch of money and I just pop the chapters I need into a binder for class!. A word of warning, the pages do get folded and bent more easily when in loose leaf format, so just be careful!

I love the option of placing the chapters my professor assigns for our class in a 3 ring binder, allowing me to carry only what we will discuss and review for exams. The entire book was thick and very heavy and now I have a little more than half of the original to carry to class. About the Author
Timothy D. Schowalter received his Ph.D. degree in Entomology from the University of Georgia in 1979. Since 1981, he has been a professor of entomology at Oregon State University, Corvallis, studying the effects of environmental changes, including natural and anthropogenic disturbances, on arthropod communities in temperate and tropical ecosystems, and effects of herbivores and detritivores on primary production, carbon flux, biogeochemical cycling. From 1992-93, he served as Program Director for Integrative and Theoretical Ecology at the National Science Foundation, where he was involved in developing global change and terrestrial ecosystem research initiatives at the federal level. He served as a U.S. delegate to international conventions to develop collaboration between U.S. Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and long term sites in Hungary and East Asia and the Pacific.

Insects are the most abundant animals on earth (even if they're absent from the oceans). They affect man's food and fibers. Insect pests of stored grain are the most economically important ones. Insect ecology has often been viewed as the study of these pests of fields and forests.

Timothy Schowalter's handsome book, Insect Ecology, presents the insects as components of ecological systems -- Ecosystems. In this context, insects appear as important cogs in forest and stream ecosystems, even essential ones.

The book moves from the study of individual insects (Chapters 1-4) and insect populations (Chapters 5-7) to Community Ecology, or assemblages of insect species (Chapters 8-10). At the ecosystem level, the importance of herbivory (Chapter 12), Pollination (Chapter 13) and Decomposition (Chapter 14) are considered. Chapter 15 evaluates insects as regulators of ecosystem processes.

A final synthesis reviews insect and ecosystem ecology in the context of conservation and restoration, pest management, and deteriorating environmental conditions.

I believe that Dr. Schowalter has put insects into their proper perspective, as dynamic and essential features of the natural landscape, be it terrestrial or aquatic. I recommend it to entomologists and ecologists alike, as well as naturalists who'd like a better grasp of the function of our ecosystems.

Tim Schowalter's Insect Ecology is a versatile volume that provides a breadth of information for both the professional as well as the amateur entomologist. My students are frequently borrowing this book from my office library, and although I am forever reminding them to return it, what is a wonderful tribute to Tim's volume that it is in such great demand by undergraduates! The text ranges from individual insect chapters (1-4) to populations (5-7) to community ecology of insects (8-10), and then some appropriate special chapters such as herbivory and conservation toward the end. If anyone wants an entomology book that satisfies a variety of both classroom or expedition needs, this is the one to buy!

Rough Guide vs. Lonely Planet

My friend and I visited Thailand earlier this month, and we conducted an experiment in the process: I used Rough Guide and she used Lonely Planet. We came up with similar trip plans, and we both turned to the Internet to fill in some blanks before squaring away our itinerary. Once on the road, we found ourselves using Rough Guide slightly more often than Lonely Planet.

Both guides are well organized and reasonably complete, but the Rough Guide's color maps are easier to read. While LP has more detail, it comes at the expense of readability, especially since the maps are not in color. The Rough Guide fails to adequately discuss elephant parks and other activity destinations around Chiang Mai. While LP does a better job, it still isn't complete, so I recommend using the Internet to get everything sorted out.

We did a back-to-back comparison of recommended Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai, and we found the LP recommendation to be superior. However, several restaurant listings are the same in both guides, and we did not encounter a bad Rough Guide recommendation on our journey. We found the Rough Guide's accommodation listings to be more helpful in Chiang Mai and Ko Phi Phi, but the LP recommendations are not lacking. I recommend consulting TripAdvisor to get a fuller picture of available options, as neither guide provides an exhaustive listing.

I like that the Rough Guide has full color and more photos, but the Lonely Planet guide excels at legibility. The Rough Guide switches between a couple fonts, one of which is quite difficult to read, and text does not always flow up-to-down, left-to-right in its two-column layout. LP is the clear winner here.

Both guides are overall winners. Generally speaking, I recommend Lonely Planet for Bangkok and destinations to the north and Rough Guide for destinations to the south. Rough Guide does have the advantage of not being LP; there is an unfortunate number of tourists who never try something that wasn't printed in an LP guide first. Don't be one of them and you'll have a great time in Thailand!

Key to an awesome trip

I brought this book for my Nov 2012 Thailand trip. I waited until the current issue came out (a month before my trip). Totally worth the money. Rough Guide was perfect for my Southern Thailand itinerary. I went to Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga and of course, Bangkok. I stayed in all the recommended spots from the book except at Koh Phi Phi. Everything in the book was accurate. I love how Rough Guide adds in their opinion. I picked up the Lonely Planet version for Thailand in the book store after my trip and noticed they were less opinionated and just stated facts. It also didn't have as much content as the Rough Guide. All the travelers I met during the trip used Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide actually had different hostels/hotels they recommend and I believe they had even more than Lonely Planet. The maps were easy to read. My Rough Guide was able to take a lot of abuse during the trip. If you are planning on going to Thailand, I would definitely recommend this book over others.

Great for browsing, only fair for actual research

Like most guidebooks, it's great for browsing, but it's already out of date. As a travel blogger, I find myself using it occasionally to round out (or sometimes confirm) a trip. It's rarely left the house (mainly because I'll take notes and e-mail them to myself), and it's heavy. That can't fairly be helped, but the font can - a light sans-serif font that's difficult to read in lower light. The smaller font size doesn't help either.

If you're planning an epic trip of Thailand, or prefer to browse travel guides, this is fine. If your trip will be less than a couple of weeks long, this is overkill.
