About the Author
Ian M. Franks, PhD gained his full English Football Association Coaching Award in 1975. He was head coach at the Olympic Soccer Training Centre at the University of British Columbia. He then took a position as Director of the Centre for Sport Analysis at UBC where he developed the first computer analysis system for soccer and conducted research into the analysis of international soccer matches. He has published over 200 research articles, 22 book chapters, and 5 books in the areas of Sport Analysis, Skill Acquisition, and Movement Control. Professor Franks is also a Fellow of Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology as well as the National Academy of Kinesiology.

Mike Hughes, PhD has conducted research into Match Analysis for over 30 years. He has worked with National Sports Great Britain teams as a notational analyst in soccer. He has published over 160 research articles, written and contributed to 24 books, and organized 18 international conferences on sport analysis. His areas of expertise include modeling, sport system perturbations, tactical and technical game analyses as well as individual movement analysis. Mike was the founder and is now President of the International Society of Analysis of Sport (ISPAS) as well as being the founding editor of the International Journal of Performance Analysis of Sport. Mike is a BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences) accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist and a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.

Does not deserve to be America's #1 pregnancy book

I just read this book cover to cover. No, seriously. And man, am I glad I was not pregnant at the time.

This is far from the first pregnancy/childbirth/parenting book I've ever read. I'm a health and research nut, and a librarian, so I do a lot of research and reading before I do anything. I try to consult a variety of sources from different viewpoints. Since this is the #1 most-recommended pregnancy book, I figured I might as well read this one too and see what all the fuss is about. I have yet to figure it out.

1) The main issue I have with this book is the clear lack of research that went into it. There are absolutely ZERO references in the entire book (and it is a beast of a book). The author's credentials also seem to be limited to a) she's a mom, and b) she is the author of this book. Yet she spouts "knowledge" and information like it's gospel. The forward is written by an esteemed OB/GYN, and I can see why he endorses the book, which I will point out below, but as for any type of verified medical or research-based advice, that is it. She tells you exactly what to do, but offers nothing in the way of an explanation about why you should do it. Oh, she says "Do this because . . . ." and "Studies show . . . " but gives no names or authors of those studies so that you can check it out for yourself. Maybe that works for some people, but not for me. I need more than the word of one woman who happened to have two children and write a book about it.

2) This book perpetuates (possibly unintentionally) an increasingly disturbing (and increasingly outdated) "medical management" view of pregnancy and childbirth. The author repeatedly tells you not to worry about your pregnancy, but goes on to list the MYRIAD ways something could very possibly go wrong if you don't exactly follow her advice. There's nothing wrong with being aware of the various pregnancy complications, but the tone of this book is very "Do absolutely everything your practitioner says and don't worry your pretty little head." Every single question is answered with "Ask your practitioner." There is a section near the beginning about making sure you have a practitioner whom you like and respect, but basically, as long as you find someone you're socially compatible with, that person's word is it. Especially during the childbirth section, she describes the various medical interventions as inevitable, doesn't discuss the reasons WHY such procedures are performed, doesn't cite studies about how effective or ineffective they are, doesn't mention or explain informed consent AT ALL (I mean, if your practitioner ordered it, don't ask questions, just go with it), and shows a strong bias for OB/GYNs, hospital births, C-sections (after all, almost one-third of women in the U.S. give birth that way -- don't you want to as well?), and all the pain-relief drugs you can get your (and your baby's, I might add) hands on. Again, there is nothing wrong with choosing an OB/GYN, a hospital birth, or pain-relief drugs -- but women deserve to have all of their options (and studies demonstrating the pros and cons thereof) laid out for them without scaring them into just doing everything their practitioner says. Again, I can see why the author of the forward endorses this book and it's routinely handed out at prenatal appointments: it begets compliant patients who don't ask questions. God forbid you be "difficult" when someone is just trying to help you have a healthy baby!

3) The lack of alternative viewpoints is astounding. Obviously every pregnancy/childbirth book has its own ideology, but for a book that claims to include everything you need to know about pregnancy and childbirth, it should not take a one-size-fits-all approach. So many women only ever read this book and aren't even aware that other philosophies (with actual research to back them up) exist.

Times are changing. More and more women want to take research- and evidence-based approaches to something as important as conceiving, carrying, and giving birth to their children. Blind faith in the medical profession is no longer the norm. This book is an outdated remnant of a dangerous and uninformed past --giving it to every pregnant woman just prolongs the torture (and those compliant patients everyone seems to want).

All this book is doing is scaring the crap out of me. Maybe I should have waited to read it till the 2nd trimester, but I was curious and was told at every turn that this was the most complete and trusted resource. I didn't get past the first 2 chapters. I was already nervous about doing something wrong or having something terrible happen, and this book didn't help assuage those fears. I suppose they have to address the potential risks and concerns, but it seems as though there are better ways to frame them than how it's presented. I'm a Type 1 Diabetic, so automatically in a high-risk category and therefore already worried. If you're supposed to reduce stress during pregnancy, I'm not sure that this book will help.

Let me start off by saying I have an intensive background in Biology and work in healthcare. I was looking for an in depth and informative book that would be a guide for my first pregnancy. I purchased this book due to the high reviews and ratings but it was a complete waste of my money. I feel like this book is for people who have NO idea what goes on from conception to birth. Honestly, to me, the book felt like sex ed for a grown up. The book is also very controversial. "Don't use acne medication for it might cause birth defects, but if you did that's okay just go ahead and stop now." Uh ok. I completely understand how one might be scared reading some of the reasoning explained by Heidi Murkoff, especially if you are a first time mom. One thing I did like was that it clearly explains the basic development of the embryo and fetus month to month. BUT, I would not recommend this book to ANYONE except maybe a teenager eagerly wanting to know about how pregnancy works. DONT BUY IT!

A very fun read, but missing a little something.

While still thoroughly enjoyable, I felt that this book was perhaps not as good as the previous books in the series. While I was reading, I kept feeling that something was missing, that little spark that was in all the other books before this. The main characters seemed to be sort of empty, I didn't make as much of a connection with them this time around. This is definitely more serious than the others, I can tell that Goldberg probably wrote the majority of this one, and while I love Goldberg's work, my love for the Monk novels and that writing style is a huge part of what drew me to this series in the first place, it just felt like it was missing some trademark Evanovich-ness. There wasn't a whole lot of funnier moments that made me LOL. It didn't really have the same feel of the rest of the series until the second half. Some of the best parts come from the returning supporting characters, almost all of them were there this time around, and I just can't get enough of them. I loved the ending, no cliffhanger this time. I did still enjoy this installment of the series, and I recommend picking this up if you like the series, though you really have to read the other books to get the full grasp of what's going on. I love this series and I really hope that we'll get more books in the future, I am very much looking forward to those.

Enjoyed the story, worth reading.....

This story is different from the previous plots in the series because it is personal this time. Nick has been taken and is being used for the gain of a madman! Kate has to get him back at all costs. In addition to the usual cast some previously introduced characters from previous books were brought back into this scheme and given tidy endings. It was nicely done and now that I have read all the books I appreciated it. This story was full of twists and turns as usual, the comedy was spot on and the relationship between Kate and Nick has gone to a new level.

It has all the right action, suspense, and humor that a girl can ask for. What I was not happy about comes down to the editing. In every book all the main characters receive a small introduction for those who this book may be their first time reading this series but this time Kate’s dad Jake was introduced twice. Also, there was a portion towards the end where Kate’s name was in place of the female bad gal. This book felt for the first time that two different authors wrote it and it was edited in such a manner that it was obvious.

What a let down. I did enjoy the story and it is worth reading! I just could not believe how poorly it was put together. I am hoping that they will correct the editing snafu’s and maybe republish a second edition. For your reference I read the hardcopy isbn#978-0-553-39277-7. I did rate the story four stars because I truly did enjoy the story. I left off one star because for me I missed some of the quirkiness and tongue-in-cheek that I was used to in the other stories so I felt it was a wee bit lacking. The editing issues complaint is for those of you who will read it, so that you know before hand.

Fox & O'Hare do not disappoint

The Pursuit is the 5th book of con man Nick Fox & FBI agent Kate O'Hare series.  In this book, they work on preventing a terrorist attack in the U.S.

This book picks up immediately after the 4th book, The Scam.  

The supporting characters return.  What I've enjoyed about this series is the back and forth dialog and innuendo between Fox and O'Hare.  There are many funny moments between the characters, just like in the previous books.  

What I like about this book and the series is the fast moving pace, makes hard to put down this book.  I also enjoy when they off in a foreign location where we are given specific details about certain historical landmarks in those foreign cities.  Makes you feel like we are actually there.

This is my favorite series and I'm really looking forward to the next book.  

I definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy mystery/thriller books.  To those who've enjoyed the previous books in this series will not be disappointed.

Beautiful, but ...

I first would like to say that I do not disrespect the artist/author of the book, I think her artwork is great and I even preordered the book as soon as it was listed.
This book is gorgeous and practical. Her one style of faux calligraphy is very pretty and the examples are very clear.
BUT, there is only one style of "cursive" hand lettering demonstrated and three block letter or print examples. BUT, the blank pages.... About 45% of the book is blank pages, not to mention all the white space. It makes for a very clean look on a book but it feels like they could have printed a booklet and told you to buy a realm of paper for practice instead. Even with the printed guidelines for practice the amount of blank pages is excessive. Pages 96-110 are ENTIRELY BLANK but for the page number, and so is almost half of the book.
It is introductory so it is strictly for beginners.
The cover is very hard and the wire bound feature is very nice for practicing. If you use the pages for writing you don't need an extra notebook.

Lacking Actual Teaching & Helpful Content

I love the author's work and hate to write a poor review but this book is a poor teacher of lettering. There are MANY practice pages but little instruction. Really it's just a book of faux calligraphy practice pages with arrows showing the direction of the letters and telling you to pick up your pen between letters. This information can be widely accessed by free lettering sources. In purchasing a $30.00 book I expect more inside information, tips and tricks and showing me HOW she achieves her style of lettering, etc... For example, the flourishes pages literally just tells you that flourishes and illustrations are great to add to your lettering then shows you a 2" x 2" example of the author's own "Bless Your Heart" design (with zero instructions on how she achieved it) and has about a 6"x3" area next to that design that says "Practice Here." So essentially you can just google "chalk full of love bless your heart" and see the image of that design and practice it yourself and you've received the same amount of info on flourishing as she gives in the book. Unfortunately this book is a well marketed and branded exterior of book with little helpful content within.

This book is beautiful! I agree with some ot the previous posts that there ARE a lot of empty pages but I like that because I never seem to have a book and paper in the same place. And, there is an additional pdf packet available with extra things like combining letters that is super useful as well. It is really good for beginners.

Mark S. Reinhart works both as a Media Services Consultant and a musician in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. He has written for The Lincoln Herald and presented a number of lectures on the subject of Lincoln-related film and television.

Interesting book, but repetitive

The idea for this book is a good one--Batman is such an iconic character, and has been interpreted in very diverse ways on film. The author is quite knowledgable on Batman history, and is quite opinionated on his thoughts regarding the various film makers and their contributions to Batman (good or bad). I only had two problems with the book:

1. The introduction is lengthy and quite good--the only problem is that most of it is repeated in the chapters on the various films. That's a lot of padding for a $45 book.

2. There are VERY complete summaries of each of the films--the author should have assumed that anyone willing to pay $45 for this book would have enough familiarity with the storylines of each, and would rather have more pages devoted to critical essay on them. The book would have been better served by expanding the topics to include the animated films.

In short, I commend the author for taking the initiative to write and publish a book like this--I hope if he publishes a future revised edition to include the new movie he takes some of these ideas into account.

Lots Of Useful Information

I purchased this book because it offers a full analysis of the 2 Batman serials. I got more than I bargained for. Reinhart has done a great job researching these films. But at times it seemed as if he really enjoyed criticizing and bashing the Batman and Robin serial. No the serials are not as good as they could have been. But they were the first time Batman was adapted to the big screen. I also enjoyed Reinhart's review of Batman(1966). I even think Lee Meriwether made a sexier Catwoman than Julie Newmar! I do wish Lee had done the tv show too! I also enjoyed the chapters on the 1980's & 1990's features as well as Batman Begins. I do hope there will be an updated future edition to include the Dark Knight. A must read for Batman fans everywhere.

I used this book to research the two Batman movie serials made in the 1940's. I found it to be loaded with valuable information about not only the serials, but ALL of the Batman live action movies released between 1943 and 1997. I highly recommend this book to serious Batman fans.
