A true waste of money..

As other reviewers have noted, the book comes with two sudoku puzzles together with "tricks" to solving them. However the "tricks" are not only simplistic, but poorly explained. For example, on page 41 the author points out a quad in the first of the two puzzles, but does it so it's not understandable. The "1" in row 6, column 6 is eliminated without adequate explanation. Then the second of the two puzzles in the book can be quite easily solved without going through all the machinations taken up in the rest of the book.

My advice - don't buy this book. There are far better available.

For the frustrated person wrestling with trying to solve sudoku puzzles, this book provides a framework and shows reasonable ways to go about working sudoku. My raving maniac has become a happy and earnest solver.

I am sure that you are a not a dummy student but , unfortunately, normal people can have a very hard time with this exam. So, if you are a normal person, this is a great book to start your preparation. There are other good books, like "Cracking the Toefl CBT", "Arco preparation Kit for the Toefl" or "Longman Preparation Course for the Toefl Test", but if you don't have time, this book aims you to deal efficiently with this crisis, saving your time and getting you out as quickly as possible.

My Linux bible

Whoa! Integrate Linux Solutions into your Windows Network is EXACTLY that. I am truly impressed with not only the content of the book, but the way it was written. It is "open" enough to cover virtually all brands of Linux and more than that, gives clear examples to help with the more challenging tasks of integration. I have used this book extensively for setting up a Linux Proxy Server (Squid) on my Windows network and am very pleased with the results. More than this, it will help with just about all practical applications of a server on your network. This book is worth every penny.

Solid book

I liked this book. Dustin Puryear takes a good approach to writing this book. Instead of just giving you alot of information he obviously sat back and decided what kind of features an administrator wants out of a server. He then went on to explain how to actually offer those features using Linux. He does this using examples the entire book. If you are a hardcore UNIX user then this book is probably useful for you. It does go over UNIX stuff, and it can be used by UNIX people to configure their stuff. But for Windows NT people this book is GREAT! I feel like I'ma UNIX pro now! However I did have one small problem, and that's why I gave it 4/5 instead of 5/5. I found a couple of typo's. In most books this is ok, but in a computer book it can be annoying. (Of course, I have never seen a book, computer or otherwise, without them!)

Dustin understands why Windows admins would use Linux

I just love the walkthroughs. For Windows admins this is like an eye opener. Like anybody else I needed to understand how I could use Linux to share files, printers, do remote admin, etc... Excellent descriptions of bash, samba, MySql, PHP and Apache. Concise, to the point, allowing me a quick start with hints where to further each project. Dustin's approach is to offer real life examples of how to install and use Linux applications. He covers every basic aspect of the Linux system. My recommendation is to buy the book, install Linux and proceed page by page in the exact order of his book chapters and try everything. At the end of the book you will know a little bit of everything.

New to Photography? This is REQUIRED IMHO!

I cannot say enough about how exceptional this book is, in instruction AND value!

If you cant understand exposure and the 3 parts of the exposure triangle you will never progress and you will always be somewhat lost. This book breaks it all down in small easy to retain steps with excellent color photos to illustrate exactly what they are talking about. I have below average reading comprehension due to age, health issues and just not being bright! I feel very strongly that if it got through to me, you will have great success. And heres the thing... Exposure is just one of the aspects of photography this book will teach you. Starting with equipment in the first chapter, to post production basics in the last chapter.

It covers EVERYTHING from understanding the different shooting modes, lenses, available light, flash, you name it.

I purchased this book along with my Canon SX50HS camera and I went from shooting auto to manual in one week and again, im a slow learner! Speaks volumes for this book.

I enjoyed the book so much i went back and read it in its entirety a month later. At that point I read "Stunning Digital Photography" which is an excellent EXCELLENT book in its own right, but Im glad I started with this book here.

I will be purchasing an enthusiasts level DSLR very soon and with that I plan to buy one of the companion books with my models name in the title (all available on Amazon).

I would also suggest giving your cameras manual a good reading if you havent done so.

In my opinion, if you want to have a good understanding of photography basics, you cant do better than starting with The Beginner's Photography Guide.

Good beginner book

This is a very good, well written book on quality paper. It is an excellent overview of the subject with enough detail and explanation to give you a solid foundation of the concepts of digital photography. Highly recommended for "Beginners" and even intermediate photographers can find it a useful refresher.

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Told in rhyme, this is the story of a slinky black cat who prowls at night and becomes a thief. After his loot is discovered, he decides to stay home nights. While there's nothing wrong with this book, there's nothing to recommend it, either. The text is somewhat workmanlike, with very precise rhythm but not much charm. The full-color illustrations lack the personality needed to draw children into the story or to make Slinky an interesting character. Quite simply, the cat steals stuff, then stops. It's hard to imagine many preschoolers who would sit through the whole book. There's just nothing to it.

Another Great Story by Lynley Dodd

We have a cat and this is a great cat tale for our kids (3 and 1). Lynley Dodd's rhyming ans storytelling are very entertaining and Slinky Malinki is a beloved character. We bought this after first receiving "Slinky Malinki Open the Door" as a gift (another recommended title. It is amazing how hard it is to come across a children's book that has the perfect balance between good artwork and good writing. There are so many poorly written stories out there. My husband and I have no qualms reading this story over and over again to our kids.

Cat burglar

Again Ms Dodd takes us on a furry adventure. This time with a kleptomaniac cat who just can't help himself from helping himself to the neighbourhood treasures! Her descriptions of Slinky Malinki are utterly delightful and she employs wonderful alliteration to accentuate the sensuality and fluidity of movement. Once again the use of rhyme and rhythm carry the reader through highs and lows in Slinky Malinki's adventures. Another delightful treasure I've not been able to let go off, despite children in their teens!

A favorite in our house

I came across Lynley Dodd and Slinky Malinki while browsing in a book store in London 8 years ago. I brought a copy back for a little friend and she LOVED it. When I had a kiddo of my own, I bought it for our collection. Our son is a huge fan. It probably doesn't hurt that we have two black cats that look a lot like Slinky Malinki. :) Lynley Dodd has a talent for rhythm that captivates children. We now own more books from the Slinky Malinki collection and love them all.

About the Author
Robert Goldblatt is a Professor of Pure Mathematics at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has served as the Co-ordinating Editor of the Journal of Symbol Logic and has been a Managing Editor of Studia Logica for the past two decades.

Clear, concise, and well motivated.

I have only read the first seventy pages of this book, but so far it is excellent. The character of the book can be likened to Kleene's "Introduction to Metamathematics" or "Mathematical Logic." The subject is well motivated by brief philosophical discussions, but the philosophy is not allowed to interrupt the flow of mathematical development. There are few exercises, but enough for the casual reader to check from time to time that he or she is understanding the material. The exposition itself is perfectly clear and concise, by my lights. Nothing important is skipped--one does not need to fill in the blanks in proofs--yet the book moves at a good pace. The focus of the book is on the development of Category theory in relation to its applications in logic. For this reason it is probably of more interest to a logician or a philosopher than to a computer scientist. Indeed, for the logician who is interested in Category theory this book cannot be missed. To put it bluntly, Goldblatt strikes me as a superior mind, even his brief remarks on set theory were enlightening. The book has been (to this point, at least) a very enjoyable read.

Enjoyable, though not as accessible as the author might hope.

I came to this book with an interest in philosophy of mathematics, formal semantics, and non-classical logics, attracted to the author's stated goals to make category theory and its implications available to both the mathematically and philosophically inclined by requiring very little background in set theory or mathematics. I have a fairly good grasp of first order logic, and know enough set theory to talk about things like Kripke semantics in a general fashion, and I find this book challenging. The author defines things like a limit on a diagram (fairly early in the book) and doesn't make it clear to me what the significance of the concept is supposed to be.

I do still find it full of suggestive and interesting ideas, and the author is clearly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A general picture does emerge in the less formal discussions at the beginnings of the chapters, so flipping around a little can help you get an idea for the context. But ultimately I think this is still more accessible to graduate level math students, and I'm giving it a four star review because so far as I can tell, it succeeds in its technical aspects, and mainly fails only in reaching its entire stated audience.

Great introduction to the theory of toposes.

When Goldblatt's book first hit the stands, it was blasted by reviewers who had a geometric predilection. They claimed that Goldblatt had trivialized this essentially rich geometric subject by giving a set-theoretic treatment.
I became fascinated with topos theory in the summer of 1989. My only experience with category theory at that time was some dabbling that every graduate student gets in studying modules and in functional analysis. I didn't have much background in algebraic topology where the subject is usually developed considerably further.
Frankly, I found Goldblatt's "gentle" approach to categorical concepts and the concept of a topos very rewarding. I worked through most of the book in a summer, and was fully prepared to take on the more advanced texts at that point. Later, I had the opportunity to teach topos theory at the graduate level to people with backgrounds similar to mine (i.e., without a strong background in category theory). We worked through most of Goldblatt's book in the first semester and I guarantee that all the students were very grateful, as I had been, for Goldblatt's approach to the subject.
The book is well written, accessible to graduate students, filled with fun and often challenging exercises, and packed with references. In my opinion, it is the right place to start if you want to become proficient in topos theory (and you don't already have significant proficiency in category theory).
