Only if you like classic books (and then go for the 5th edition)

This is a review of the 9th edition. Please note that amazon has included this review for other editions as well. That is okay because I have something to say about them too, but you should be aware. The really old editions are probably out of copyright.

I would not recommend this book unless you are into the "history of technical analysis". The focus of the book is classical patterns of bar charts. The book is absolutely not bad, but it's value is a bit dubious. Why read a book that have charts that are 1/2 century old? You can't be sure that things haven't changed, can you? So the newer editions also have more modern charts. However, this combination of old and new makes for a frustrating reading. Actually I would think most book deteriorate in quality after their 3rd edition.

If you want a classic in your bookself I would really recommend you to buy a second-hand copy of the last edition written by Edwards & Magee alone. This would be the 5th edition. It has a very professional binding and clear white pages. The new edition is a very ugly and cheaply bound hardcover. This comment is only if you are into good looking books. You get the 5th edition for $5 at amazon, so it is a nobrainer!

Addition in 2010: Edwards and Magee wrote a classic that has many editions. I bought one copy around 1984 and it was the first book in technical analysis that I read. I liked it a lot. With time other books have been written, but I still like this old book. Now mainly because it is a very pretty book. Expensive paper and a proper spine that will never break. It feels nice to touch. I value nice books if their content is classic. I bought the 9th edition just out of curiosity and I am displeased by it. There is a running commentary in sections by a new third author - the original authors long dead. The commentary is ridiculous. At one point he decides to call an upside down head-and-shoulder pattern for a kilroy patterns. Hello? We don't need comments on this level. The paper and binding is ugly (but not as bad as books from Wiley Finance - please use better paper in your expensive books!). So on all accounts a ** book. If you love books, go to abebooks and try to find an old beautiful copy instead, but they are no longer $5!

The best purchase I have made so far in the world of technical analysis. The content may be old, but is still relevant if you want to learn the basics of price action trading. Not a lot of fluff, just the kind of details on topics that most of us are already familiar with such as resistance, head-and -shoulder, etc... That will add value to your knowledge and give you an edge when trading these patterns. I will use this book as my main reference in the future. The book that I'm talking about here is the 5th edition.

I believe this is one of the original books to have been published on stock market technical analysis. Magee and Edwards do an excellent job explaining Dow Theory and stock chart analysis. I bought the 5th edition because it was the last edition that was actually edited by the original authors. This book is the source of most modern technical analysis theory. It covers reversal patterns, gaps, support and resistance, consolidation patterns, trendlines and channels (by Edwards); and then goes into stock selection, stop orders, how to build a chart, and the practical application of those patterns and how to use them in your trading (by Magee). I read the book from cover to cover and refer back to it all the time in my technical analysis. It's an excellent resource!

Let me preface this review by saying this is NOT a beginner Wordpress book. That said, the folks who leave a mediocre review for this book due to this being over their head are ridiculous. If your looking for a book that teaches you "how to get started" with wordpress this is not your book. You will NOT find sections on how to create a post, add tags, install plugins, etcetera. This book is to teach you how to do advanced secure installs, understand the wordpress framework, template tags (the code snippets that make things work), how to create themes and plugins, and start working with some examples.

This book was an amazing for me because of where I am at in my wordpress development. Before reading this book I knew how to install wordpress, set up permalinks, work with .htaccess files, create posts, add plugins, and even do some minor tweaking. I did not however understand the core code concepts of wordpress that make it work, thus I could not advance beyond an "advanced beginner." When I would go to read advanced wordpress books they were all written in techie speak and I always ended up feeling lost.

Enter Smashing Wordpress:

From the moment I started reading this book it was right at the level I needed. I had finished my knowledge of the beginner to mid level stages of wordpress and Smashing Wordpress took me to a solid level of advanced wordpress techniques and theme/plugin building. It is written in PLAIN ENGLISH and not techie speak like most advanced technology books (please remember you must have a solid beginner level understanding or this book will seem complicated).

If your looking to start understanding all that code that makes themes and plugins work and you have a solid understanding of the basics of wordpress this book is for you.

From the very first chapter this book I stated to absorb the wordpress code concepts and advanced techniques I was craving to learn. I am half way through this book and I am quickly becoming the advanced wordpress theme creator that I have been wanting to be. (This book will also give you a solid ability to modify even the most advanced themes)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO WORDPRESS USERS READY TO UNDERSTAND AND BUILD OR MODIFY WORDPRESS THEME AND PLUGINS.

Spectacular Content/Poor Book Design

I am fairly new to web design and wordpress theme development and have been searching for ways to go beyond the typical wordpress theme. This book gives you exactly what it says it will. It really does go beyond the blog. This is by far the most thorough wordpress themeing book I have found. The content within this book is dense and every bit of it is useful.

I would not recommend this book to the absolute beginner unless you really like jumping headfirst into the very deep end. You really need to have at least a moderate understanding of html css and php to get through this book. The author is able able to cover as much as he does in large part by assuming you can keep up.

The biggest problem with this book and the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is the layout. I have heard this complaint regarding other books from smashing magazine and unfortunately it is very true. The guys at smashing mag are brilliant web designers but would do well to hire some equally brilliant print designers to layout their books. The biggest problem is the inner margins of the book. They have been designed as though this book were to be read on a vertical blog with identical margins on both pages instead of reflected margins resulting in having to force the book open to read the left page. Sorry to go on about this but it really is a big problem and I hope they will fix this in future versions (or at least in future publications).

Pros:
1. Spectacular content not found in any other single book
2. Covers up and coming wordpress features such as child themes
3. Tutorials for designing functioning job boards, faq knowledge bases, e-commerce sites, portfolio sites and more
4. 2 chapters on functions.php and plugin development
5. Too many great things content wise to list!

Cons:
1. Not recommended for the beginner
2. Layout of the book is quite poor and makes reading difficult

Overall:
If you are serious about creating your own wordpress themes and have experience with css html and php then this is absolutely the book you want.

A spectacularly bad book

OK. I'm not a wordpress beginner; I'm not a computer newbie. I have installed, configured and developed with wordpress as a CMS professionally and installed it to run blogs. I have a higher degree in computer science. I say this because I want to be absolutely clear that this book is bad for anyone at any level.

The book is badly written. It makes no attempt at all to introduce things in an orderly way. I had a more confident grasp of themes *before* I read the chapters on themes than after! Terminology is not regularly explained and where it is the explanations are sometimes of a vague, kind of, sort of like this variety and then the author moves swiftly on.

Instructions are often incomplete. This is a problem because the *context* is not made clear. You can tell me to finish off some settings without being very explicit *if* you've made it clear *where* those are to be found. If you don't then it's just frustrating.

There is no progressive nature either overall or in individual topics. You jump in and jump around and if you persevere you may just make it back to sure.

This book has no use to a beginner and no use to anyone more advanced. This isn't because it tackles intermediate or advanced topics but because it's written by someone who has little idea of instructional writing and no talent for clarity of exposition. If you are a beginner I'd go with Wordpress Complete or Headfirst Wordpress and if you're after something more advanced then the Wrox design and develop book.

Very Good!

I simply love this work of Lobsang, very inspirational and I believe honest. I would recommed this book highly for anyone who has an open mind & a sincere hunger to know the truth. This work of Lobsang may seem outrageous or unbievable to some, but thats the reaction of a mind that has accepted the lies spin disinformation and the slickest mind control dished out by the Illuminati Control Freaks thats behind Corporate America & England who own or control what 95% of the news wires dictate.

Rampa is on a journey, accompanied by a few fellow lamas, to meet with the beings that are telepathically leading them on. After a freezing trek through a Tibetan mountain range, they come to a warm and blissful garden called The Hidden Land. There they encounter a deserted flying saucer sitting on the ground, which they enter and explore.
Soon they meet an alien Rampa calls The Tall One, who briefs them on their coming tour through outer space, the real purpose of their journey. Instead of describing the experience as warm and fuzzy, sweetness and light, Rampa talks frankly about the terror he feels as he is surrounded on all sides by such "high strangeness." That is another aspect of the abduction experience he shares with the more recent spate of modern abductees--one's initial reaction to the alien presence is nearly always one of fear.
But after those first moments of fright, Rampa and his friends traverse the heavens on a flying saucer and witness all the beauty of an alien paradise on Venus. In all fairness to Rampa, it isn't really necessary that the location is literally the planet Venus. It could be anywhere in any universe and the message would still be the same--heaven is waiting for those who are ready to go there.
You can read "My Visit To Venus" in one sitting, but its positive effects may last you a lifetime.

I have read that this book even thou was written by Lobsang Rampa was not published by his consent.I understand it was part of the book cave or wisdom of the ancients.Typical lobsang work,unbeleavable but plausable.As a race we know little.I believe there is more to life,and this book could possibly be a peak into reality however how unreal it all seems.There isnt much content, but the manuscript and pictures more than make up for this.Food for thought.A good read.

Awesome wedding flower ideas.

I found this book very inspiring. The pictures are very well done. My granddaughter and I found so many fantastic ideas for wedding bouquets and the other wedding flowers. While the book doesn't go into step-by-step detail on how to create the bouquets, it does give good, general instructions on how to create the bouquets for someone who is familiar with the process of creating hand-held bouquets. The book gives several money-saving tips for making the bouquets by substituting more expensive flowers with less expensive flowers when making the bouquets. If nothing else, the book is a fantastic resource for floral designs for wedding flowers.

I bought several "how to" books in order to create flowers for my daughter's wedding. This book is clear and easy to understand. Of the several books I bought this one was used most often. Even though I designed all her flowers well ahead of time from silk flowers, we were able to build off the designs in this book. If you only buy one book - it should be this one!
