Beauty Imagined: A History of the Global Beauty Industry, by Geoffrey Jones

The global beauty business permeates our lives, influencing how we perceive ourselves and what it is to be beautiful. The brands and firms which have shaped this industry, such as Avon, Coty, Estee Lauder, L'Oreal, and Shiseido, have imagined beauty for us.

This book provides the first authoritative history of the global beauty industry from its emergence in the nineteenth century to the present day, exploring how today's global giants grew. It shows how successive generations of entrepreneurs built brands which shaped perceptions of beauty, and the business organizations needed to market them. They democratized access to beauty products, once the privilege of elites, but they also defined the gender and ethnic borders of beauty, and its association with a handful of cities, notably Paris and later New York. The result was a homogenization of beauty ideals throughout the world.

Today globalization is changing the beauty industry again; its impact can be seen in a range of competing strategies. Global brands have swept into China, Russia, and India, but at the same time, these brands are having to respond to a far greater diversity of cultures and lifestyles as new markets are opened up worldwide.

In the twenty first century, beauty is again being re-imagined anew.

Review

"There are plenty of lessons for entrepreneurs and industry executives"--Womens Wear Daily

"Geoffrey Jones intimates in the title of his detailed economic history of the beauty business, Beauty Imagined, that [beauty] is created by the collective will of a consumer society. Assessing beauty as a social construct, Jones takes the late 19th century as his starting point, when an increase in mass visual dissemination, particularly the spread of commercial photography, saw ideals of beauty shift from the personal and private to the communal."--Financial Times

"Nothing slips away in Jones's book. All the great cosmetic monsters rampage through the book."--The Guardian

"A must read for the beauty junkie."--Julia DiNardo, fashionpulsedaily.com

"If you have a passion for beauty then you need to read this book. True stories about the people behind the most famous brands make the cosmetic industry come alive as you learn how it has become such a significant part of our global culture."--Leslie Blodgett, Executive Chairman of Bare Escentuals and founder of bareMinerals

"Both men and women have dressed their hair, painted their faces, and sought ways to enhance their sexual allure in every time and place, yet the ways they have done so are infinitely various.... Given the degree to which beauty is interwoven with cultural concepts, it might seem impossible to talk of global beauty, but it is the achievement of this book to show how what was once culture bound has expanded into a multinational business."--Business History Review

"One of the more fascinating stories in modern business history.... The book is thoroughly researched with documentation based on five years of interviews with companies and selected executives from prominent brands. Primary sources from corporate as well as government archives and private collections are the background for a well-supported analysis of two centuries of the beauty industry.... Of special interest are the statistics and figures never published before, revealing the scale of the industry today and its dramatic and consistent growth over the decades.... Jones offers valuable new knowledge for the critical eye of a professional business historian. At the same time the book is a must-read for anyone working in the beauty or fashion business."--EH.net

"A deft, comprehensive history that charts [the beauty industry's] path from the ancient craft of perfumery to the vast commercial cornerstone it now is... Fans of figures and appendices will find a neat summary of how the beauty business has developed, including its many mergers, acquisitions, and divestments. Those who simply love fragrance might be interested to know how Lauder transformed department store beauty halls, and her own fortunes, with Youth Dew, a fragrance whose name encapsulates the big promise in a seductively natural and simple way. The business behind it is anything but."--The Oldie

"Geoffrey Jones has written a formidable history of the Beauty Industry that reads like a novel. Beauty Imagined: A History of the Global Beauty Industry...is poised to become a classic of the genre. It should be read by anyone involved in the beauty business."--Arab News

"The book is to be admired and its author congratulated for the deft (and pioneering) fashion in which order is imposed upon such a recalcitrant subject. For anyone interested in the lineaments, scope and statistics of the beauty industries this is essential reading. It teaches us a great deal about the size and comparative structure of firms and conglomerates as they devour smaller ventures and then get gobbled up themselves."--English Historical Review

"Jones sets a new standard in skillfully chronicling the emergence and evolution of this global industry. Highly recommended."--CHOICE

"This illuminating account of the history of the beauty business, as well as its current challenges in the face of globalization, offers unique insights on the drivers of success and failure in an industry in which branding and marketing are at the heart of competitive success."--John A. Quelch, Lincoln Filene Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School

"Geoffrey Jones has distilled a massive amount of evidence from around the world to produce the intriguing essence of the global beauty business. This book's incisive analysis of how the industry grew, and its current challenges and dynamics, makes it essential reading for people working in beauty today, as well as millions who delight in using our brands each day."--Bernd Beetz, Chief Executive, Coty

"Beauty is a sprawling global business, yet Geoffrey Jones has produced a book broad enough and deep enough to encompass it compactly and with insight. Beauty Imagined skillfully marshals a vast array of disparate sources-not just from the usual suspects, but from high and low, from east and west, from north and south, and from the present and the past--into a well-honed and compelling account of the business that one way or another quite literally touches us all. This book will no doubt be read avidly by business historians, among whom Jones is preeminent. But it will also be read far beyond for what it tells us about society, about business, and about ourselves."--Paul Duguid, Adjunct Professor, School of Information, University of California, Berkeley

"The beauty industry has done well by making people look good, and making them feel good about themselves. Like other corporate sectors, it has shaped human needs as much as it has responded to them. This study of enterprise and global reach also sheds light on the inner self and its interaction with others. It is a great achievement."--Avner Offer, Chichele Professor of Economic History, University of Oxford, author of The Challenge of Affluence (OUP, 2006)

"Jones provides thick description of the people, products, and marketing processes that make us believe--or at least test--the promise that we can be made more attractive and, as we age, be kept looking young...[useful] for researchers requiring a handy, well-written source book."--Administrative Science Quarterly

Excellent

I have worked in beauty for ages and always looked for books about the evolution of the industry but could never find a serious study of the actual business of beauty. This book is a wonderful read that begins with the oils and perfumes that were en vogue in Ancient Rome to today's megabrands (Olay, Pantene) and how they are approaching consumers in emerging markets to niche brands like Korres that are gaining in popularity. While the breadth of the study and focus on the business history make this book unique, I was most impressed with the fact that much of the information came from five years of interviews with current industry leaders lending a unique insights that are of-the-moment. A must read for beauty professionals.

Outstanding
By Britt C.
As someone who is deeply familiar with the history of the beauty industry, I can confidently say that this book will be the standard reference work on the subject for years to come. The author has located rare and illuminating primary sources from companies, government archives, and private collections, many of which have not been seen before now. The material drawn from numerous interviews with present and retired top executives from a large number of the important firms in the industry makes for fascinating reading and greatly adds to what is known about the beauty industry and how it became what it is today. A high point for this reader were the wonderful color plates and black and white illustrations! The book includes a number of beautiful poster ads made by the leading European graphic artists of the pre-WWI and interwar periods, which provided the visual launch and first vehicles of brand recognition for some of the emerging international leaders among the beauty firms of the day (see, for example, the book's beautiful early ads for L'Oréal, Wella, and Beiersdorf). From the other side of the globe, a 1920s poster made by the Japanese firm Club Cosmetics for the launch of its Two Gorgeous Girls brand in the Chinese market is a fascinating (and gorgeous!) illustration of the interaction between European and Asian marketing and internationalization strategies of that period. I was also thrilled to find a picture of the movie star Anita Ekberg while still in her teens and before she had been discovered, having her hair done for a fashion show by Sweden's leading beauty entrepreneur around 1950. These wonderful images do a great job of conveying the glamour and creation of new ways of imagining beauty that the industry crafted in the first half of the last century. Other highlights from among the images are the 19th-century Japanese beauty manuals, which give a glimpse of how that country's beauty industry came to interpret Western norms; a series of images of the great French beauty entrepreneurs of the 20th century, who took the beauty ideal of Paris global; as well as the pictures of some of the immigrant entrepreneurs whose cosmopolitan lives and creative careers indelibly shaped the industry and continue to influence it today through their brands. The rich interplay of these images with the original textual sources and the interviews amounts to a first-rate and original analysis of the beauty industry, its firms, and leading entrepreneurs for the past 250 years - a gargantuan task that the author has managed with great success. Nothing worthwhile is sacrificed in this book - it provides a well-supported analysis of the broad outline and key developments of the beauty business over time (with key takeaways for students and scholars of business, history, and other related academic fields), and it manages to bring together richly detailed but never cumbersome accounts of key players, brands, and important events. This is a book to be read more than once - its narrative can be savored as a fine leisure read by the enthusiast, it will stand up to the critical eye of the professional historian and enlarge her knowledge, and it will be a book to keep on hand for the industry's insiders as they want to delve into the origins of their business.

But by 1800, the region had fallen dramatically behind--in living standards, technology, and economic institutions. In short, the Middle East had failed to modernize economically as the West surged ahead. What caused this long divergence? And why does the Middle East remain drastically underdeveloped compared to the West? In The Long Divergence, one of the world's leading experts on Islamic economic institutions and the economy of the Middle East provides a new answer to these long-debated questions.

Timur Kuran argues that what slowed the economic development of the Middle East was not colonialism or geography, still less Muslim attitudes or some incompatibility between Islam and capitalism. Rather, starting around the tenth century, Islamic legal institutions, which had benefitted the Middle Eastern economy in the early centuries of Islam, began to act as a drag on development by slowing or blocking the emergence of central features of modern economic life--including private capital accumulation, corporations, large-scale production, and impersonal exchange. By the nineteenth century, modern economic institutions began to be transplanted to the Middle East, but its economy has not caught up. And there is no quick fix today. Low trust, rampant corruption, and weak civil societies--all characteristic of the region's economies today and all legacies of its economic history--will take generations to overcome.

The Long Divergence opens up a frank and honest debate on a crucial issue that even some of the most ardent secularists in the Muslim world have hesitated to discuss.

From Publishers Weekly
Kuran (Islam and Mammon), a Duke University professor of economics and political science, continues his exploration of Islam and economics in a dense volume that debunks the most common apologies for the economic plight of the Middle East, such as colonization, or the economic importance of the annual hajj pilgrimage. Kuran argues instead that the failure of Middle Eastern economics is not due to Islam itself, but to the fact that Muslims failed to reinterpret previously successful economic concepts at the onset of the Middle Ages, while the West went on to create the corporation (see InProfile in this issue). Muslims may demur, but Kuran points out that many have abandoned some Qur'anic economic practices they disagree with, including the ban on interest, and, more progressively, they have updated and refreshed the tax code described in the Qur'an. His most controversial argument is that Islam, liberated from stagnant interpretation and practice, is very adaptable to modern institutions. (Dec.)

Review
"Professor Kuran's book offers the best explanation yet for why the Middle East has lagged. After poring over ancient business records, Professor Kuran persuasively argues that what held the Middle East back wasn't Islam as such, or colonialism, but rather various secondary Islamic legal practices that are no longer relevant today."--Nicholas D. Kristof, New York Times

"This is a book to be not just tasted but chewed and digested. Instead of facile claims that Islam is the solution or Islam is the problem, readers get a detailed history of economic institutions in the Middle East as compared to those in the West. Kuran shows that the Islamic law and practices underlying Middle Eastern commerce worked well for a long time and were much more flexible than usually assumed. . . . Clearly presented quantitative data and illuminating anecdotes add up to a fine feast."--L. Carl Brown, Foreign Affairs

"Mr. Kuran's arguments have broad implications for the debate about how to foster economic development. He demonstrates that the West's long ascendancy was rooted in its ability to develop institutions that combined labour and capital in imaginative new ways."--Economist

"The Long Divergence offers a pathbreaking analysis of why the flourishing premodern economies of the Islamic world fell into relative decline as Western Europe rose. And it explores the issue of whether conservative Islam is compatible with modern economic institutions. You'll be surprised by many of his conclusions."--Peter Passell, Milken Institute Review

"[The Long Divergence] explains a large part of why the Middle East and Turkey fell behind the West and law and economics has a lot to do with it. Various laws in Islamic societies were not conducive to large-scale economic structures, at precisely the time when such structures were becoming profitable and indeed essential as drivers of economic growth. This is not a book of handwaving but rather he nails the detail, whether it is on inheritance law, contracts, forming corporations, or any number of other topics."--Tyler Cowen, Marginal Revolution

"In an interesting new book called The Long Divergence, Timur Kuran of Duke argues that Islam's economic restrictions, rather than its cultural conservatism or isolationism, stunted development in countries where it was the dominant religion."--Massimo Calabresi, Time.com's Swampland blog

"Kuran's thesis is contentious; but it does provide us with an incentive to reformulate Islamic law. It is an excellent starting-point for a debate long overdue."--Ziauddin Sardar, Independent

"[G]round-breaking. . . . In this wide-ranging study, Kuran explores other possible factors which favored the non-Muslim business ethos over the Islamic one, but as a true scholar he rehearses other possible explanations."--Arnold Ages, Chicago Jewish Star

"A ground-breaking book. . . . Kuran argues Islamic law primarily failed to develop the concept of a corporation: an economic and legal construct, separated from family and tribal loyalty, designed to encourage investment and profit sharing."--Chris Berg, Sydney Morning Herald

"Timur Kuran is an avid reader of Islamic economic and legal history and an immensely well informed scholar. This latest work not only combines his earlier arguments but also provides some new perspectives."--Murat Cizakca, EH.Net

"[A]n invaluable contribution to the debate."--Choice

"[T]his is a most informative book and may make contemporary Muslims wonder whether a forthcoming second codification of Islamic law should heed some of the warnings of the author."--Murat Çizakça, MESA Bulletin

"Kuran deserves to be lauded for providing a narrative for how certain Middle Eastern institutions negatively affected economic outcomes. This book represents an advance in our understanding of the functioning of commercial institutions in the Middle East and of their dynamic consequences. . . . Kuran has provided an important scholarly resource for both academics and those interested in the economic and political development of the region more broadly."--Eric Chaney, Development and Change

"By eschewing simple explanations and challenging scholars to look at such heated topics as the Capitulations in a new light, Long Divergence offers a new window on an old dogma. In a time when there is a trend to blame much of the Middle East's problems on Western meddling, it is important that scholarship swims slightly against the current in shedding new light on questions of modernity and the reasons behind economic stagnation in the Muslim world."--Seth Frantzman, Digest of Middle East Studies

"The Long Divergence is an excellent book that should be of great appeal to scholars interested in the Middle East and its history, economic historians interested in the general question of why some regions failed to modernize, and social scientists interested in the historical and institutional roots of comparative underdevelopment."--Metin Cosgel, Journal of Economic History

"In this beautifully crafted book, Timur Kuran provides a remarkably rich analysis of how Islamic law impeded economic progress in the Middle East and North Africa. Kuran's views are fresh and powerful, and they are subtle."--Jack A. Goldstone, Perspectives on Politics

"The Long Divergence is a bold and stimulating book, based on a prodigious amount of research in world economic history. It is the first work of its kind to wrestle with the big question about the Middle East's economic path. . . . Though it may stir up controversy among those who may not take well to his critique of Islam, this landmark study will find a broad readership to debate its provocative conclusions."--Ghislaine Lydon, Global History

"[This book] is a major achievement that should be read by everyone with an interest in the region, as well as by scholars in economic history and institutional economics."--Mark Koyama, Public Choice

From the Back Cover

"Sophisticated, purposive, and insightful, this book brings the powerful thinking of an economist to bear on a central question of Middle Eastern history. The argument is lucid and compelling; anyone with a serious interest in the way the world has changed in recent centuries will find this book rewarding."--Michael Cook, author of A Brief History of the Human Race

"The Long Divergence is a turning point in the understanding of Middle Eastern economic history and a must-read for everyone interested in economic development in the Islamic world more generally."--Avner Greif, Stanford University

"Kuran's book is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in the Middle East and the Islamic world. The path toward economic and legal reforms for the Islamic world can only be charted by understanding the historical impediments to economic development in the region. There is currently no better starting point to contemplate such reforms and development efforts than this book."--Mahmoud El-Gamal, author of Islamic Finance: Law, Economics, and Practice

Excellent Comparison of the Development of Islamic and European Economic Law
By Steven Zoraster
I have read many books on Islam. I read them to understand why Islam conquered so much so quickly, and why it failed both politically and economically over the last 500 years. The relative economic decline is of interest because around 1000 CE, the Muslim world was as wealthy as Europe. This is the first book that provided understanding that I could use. Not on conquest directly, but on the economics.

In "The Long Divergence", the author emphasizes two themes around Muslim law of inheritance. Islamic law mandated distribution of wealth after death amongst multiple heirs. This mandate had two results. First, it forced partnerships to be short lived: Death followed by demands for their part of the inheritance by heirs required liquidation of a partnership. Knowing that any death would end the partnership, Muslims tended to favor two person partnerships of short duration. In contrast, after 1000 CE Europeans developed forms of partnership and corporations that could survive the death of a single participant. Partly this was adoption of primogeniture, under which a single descendant could inherit the whole on one person's assets in a property, business or partnership. At the same time Europeans were becoming innovative about the types of business arrangements used to accumulate wealth. Something like modern corporations developed to manage guilds, monasteries, and even cities. European rulers, desperate for money, and often only weakly in power, were willing to allow independent groups take local power, in exchange for stability and the right to tax revenues or profits. These independent institutions were allowed to change their internal rules and general goals as circumstances changes.

The second theme in "The Long Divergence" explaining relative Islamic economic decline is Islam's failure to develop anything like the European corporation. Again this relates to Muslim inheritance law. The Waqf, the only way Muslims could create an enterprise that could outlive the founder had to be established for only one purpose and that purpose could never change. So, for example, a Waqf to establish a caravan station could never become anything else, even if trade routes or means of transportation changed. Meanwhile, as mentioned in the last paragraph above, European corporations could adapt to changing circumstances to redirect investment in the more productive ways as circumstances changed.

There is much more in this book. I think the author has discovered something about the role of law in economic development that explains a lot about the relative decline of the Islamic world relative to Europe.

There is one other benefit I got from reading "The Long Divergence". The author argues that the codification of rules of inheritance in Islam provided economic laws that were superior to alternatives available in much of the world at the time of the early Muslim conquests. Although he does not argue that this caused the rise of Islam, it suggests one reason for its early success.

Also noted in the book, is that the separation between Church and State in Europe helped lead to innovation in Europe and stagnation in the Islamic world. This made me remember independently that existence of canon law, which the Catholic Church created to govern its internal ecclesiastical affairs, independent of the laws of the political entities in which it served the religious needs of Europeans. Canon law still exists and is still used by the Church to settle issues pertaining to the Church alone. (These include discipline of clergy, alteration of church property, etc.) Many protestant religions have their own versions of cannon law.

Another thing: From this book I learned that Shia and Sunni Muslims have slightly different inheritance laws. I did not know that despite much reading on Islam.

The book made is entertaing, and made me think. Not too much more to ask for in a book on a potentially boring subject!

An excellent technical review of complex phenomena
By Don McGowan
When in law school, I studied Islamic legal theory. I wish this book had existed then. But even for a lay reader who is interested in social development and asks why the Islamic world seems not to have been able to develop a modern commercial society, this book will provide insight into why.

This is not an easy book. It presumes some knowledge of Islamic thought and of Islamic belief, as well as more generally of the history of the region from about 1400 to about 1900. Okay, fine, you weren't going to buy this if you're scared of the big words, but still be ready. I put it aside a few times and came back to it. But I always came back to it.

Kuran is an excellent writer and his prose is clear. His conclusions may not be indisputable, but they are well-drawn from his premises and they are highly plausible. They are also derived from data. He has gone through not just previous writers but also historical archives to get primary source data to back up his thoughts and analysis. This isn't Niall Ferguson - you don't have to wade through pages of tables and statistics - but it's clear that if Kuran had wanted to write that book he could have.

The other review of this book (at time of my posting there was only the one) has gone into great depth on the discussion of the rules of inheritance, and I won't repeat. I'll focus instead on one element that suggests to me that Kuran is onto something: his explanation for why Islamic societies continued to allow choice of law to religious minorities even after it was clear that they were benefiting from this, while denying it to Muslims who therefore couldn't have benefited. In an oversimplified nutshell, Kuran suggests that it's related to various societal factors all of which were intended to benefit Muslims and that this was an unintended side effect, and that foreign governments which were becoming more dominant in the world capitalized on their local co-religionists in order to extend their reach into the Muslim world. You may agree, you may not, but the argument is well-made.

But his most important argument is this: there is nothing innately anti-Islamic about modern capitalist structures, and the fact that Islamic countries haven't adopted them is a historical artefact and not an innate impossibility. As I was reading this, the revolution in Tunisia had just ended, Egypt was just ending, and Bahrain/Yemen/Algeria/Iran/Libya were ongoing. It will be interesting to see, if any of these countries decides to bring themselves into the modern commercial era, whether Kuran is right.

Hard Reading -
By Loyd Eskildson
In the year 1000, the Middle East's economy was at least as advance as Europe's. But by 1800, the region had fallen dramatically behind. "The Long Divergence's" author, Timur Kuran, argues that the explanation lies not in geography or Muslim attitudes; instead it was Islamic legal institutions that slowed private capital accumulation, corporations, and large-scale production. Low trust, rampant corruption, and weak civil institutions have followed, and will take generations to overcome.

A good place to start is with the lack of corporate structure in early Islam. The first mostly Muslim-owned joint stock company came in 1851; further delaying Muslim corporations was the lack of a mechanism for trading shares, forcing shareholders to give up liquidity. 'Tax farmers' (those who paid rulers for the right to collect and keep taxes) might have evolved into corporations, but the rulers developed a bad habit of revoking the agreements.

The alternative to corporations, traditional Islamic partnerships, dissolved upon the death, withdrawal, incapacitation of any single member.

Estates, in turn, were divided according to Islamic inheritance rules. The intent was to spread wealth, strengthen families, benefit wives and daughters, and promote political stability. Muslim inheritance practices are embodied in the Koran, and had to modify.

Until modern times, Middle Eastern cities lacked corporate status. Kuran did point out that the early Muslim alternative to incorporated towns providing service was the 'waqf.' The waqf was perpetual, controlled by the founder per his directions, and could provide drinking water, pavement, travelers assistance (especially to those making a pilgrimage to Mecca), even colleges and madrases. Since the colleges were also constrained by the founders' directives, over time they evolved little and became intellectual backwaters. Regardless, these partially successful alternatives to incorporation reduced pressure to develop the corporate mode, and along with it the accounting and legal framework needed in support.

Non-Muslim subjects of Islamic states had to follow Islamic law only in matters of taxation and security - they were free to do business under the rules of their home jurisdiction. A frequent complaint was that Islamic courts were biased against Muslims (and vice-versa in Europe). Non-Muslims were prohibited from testifying against Muslims. Judges lacked training in commercial law, and the proceedings relied heavily on oral evidence (concerned over forgery, misreading of the contents Muslim illiterates, about 95% of the population). Litigants could hire witnesses.

Many mistakenly believe that Muslim law precluded charging interest. Kuran says this isn't true - it only prohibits 'riba,' the Arabian practice whereby a borrower's debt id doubled if not paid on time. This practice often resulted in the confiscation of the borrower's assets, even enslavement.

Overall, "The Long Divergence" is difficult reading, but worth the effort.

Four Plays by Dawn Powell, by Dawn Powell, Tim Page, Michael Sexton

FROM HER COLLEGE days onward, Dawn Powell dreamed of becoming a successful playwright. Indeed, over the course of four decades, she finished at least ten plays and was working on fashioning her novel The Golden Spur into a musical comedy during her final illness. Only two of her plays were mounted during her lifetime, however. This volume contains both of those works - Big Night which was produced by the legendary Group Theater in 1933, and Jigsaw, which was staged by the Theater Guild the following year. These are fast-paced, blunt-spoken - and very funny - comedies that directly anticipate the hard-boiled satire of such novels as Turn, Magic Wheel and Angels on Toast. Rounding out the book are two unpublished (and as yet unproduced) plays that Powell wrote in the late 1920s - the experimental, quasi-expressionist Women at Four O'Clock and a nostalgic, bittersweet story of old New York, Walking Down Broadway, which director Erich von Stroheim would later adapt into the Hollywood film Hello, Sister!
Eleven of Dawn Powell's fifteen novels are currently available in paperback from Steerforth Press, as well her widely acclaimed diaries. She died in 1965.

From Library Journal
Powell (1896-1965) was recognized for writing novels, diaries, and letters about her life as a small-town girl who came to the big city to achieve fame and wealth. But Powell also wrote ten plays, four of which are collected here. Only two of themABig Night and Jig SawAwere ever produced, and they are included here, along with Women at Four O'Clock and Walking Down Broadway. Many critics debunked Powell's writing for its feminist skewering of men and society. But, according to editors Sexton and Page, Powell's works encompass a larger cloud of human nature, showing all the mistakes we make just by getting out of bed in the morning. For instance, Big Night tells the tale of an advertising salesman on the verge of unemployment who has invited a potential client from Chicago to dinner. The version included here was assembled by Sexton from two drafts found in the Dawn Powell Collection at Columbia University. Powell's plays, though not critical successes, are valued for the powerfully honest way characters are scrutinized to illuminate the fantasies and vanities that make us all human. Four More Reasons to Read Dawn Powell
By H.D.
I always enjoy reading Dawn Powell's books and I looked forward to reading her plays as reading plays is a favorite pastime. The four plays chosen out of the ten she wrote reveal her versatility. The first, "Big Night" reveals a cast of characters leading lives of not so quiet desperation. The men and women are all driven by a desire to better themselves and are ruthless in use of each other to achieve their desires. The dialogue is straight to the point and while reading the play, I was saying to myself, "I don't like this play or the people in it;". I kept reading and became ambivalent. Days later, I was still thinking about the characters and their story and realized as usual with Powell, there was more poignancy than realized at first.
I tried to think of comparisons of this play with others I had read and "Who' Afraid of Virginia Woolf" comes the closest. The drama is taut, the humor cutting, the dialogue sharp and the play begins in the evening, the characters get well oiled and ends the morning after the party.
The other three plays don't deliver the punch of "Big Night" but they show Powell's diversity and sensitivity.
"Jigsaw", her most commercially successful play is a lighthearted drawing room farce reminiscent of Noel Coward. New York's idle sophisticates struggle to find happiness, not my cup of tea but still interesting.
"Women At Four O'clock" was my least favorite of the four plays. This is an avant-garde play that I had trouble getting a handle on, my feeling on this one was and remains neutral.
"Walking Down Broadway" is a sensitive portrayal of young people from small town America trying to follow their dreams in New York City. This is a theme Powell is well qualified to tell, in part it is her story.
If you haven't read Dawn Powell yet, I suggest you start with her novels. In my opinion the best of her novels is "My Home is Faraway".

Excellent!!
By Whats My Line
Love these plays. Powell is a genius at characterization and understands the foibles and foolishness of all of us, though she clearly loves her characters. Read Powell whenever you can; she is a buried treasure. Her novels are even better than her plays. Try her haunting Ohio novels, "My Home is Far Away" and "Dance Night," and NY novels "Turn, Magic Wheel," "A Times to Be Born," and "The Golden Spur."

Software Architecture in Practice (3rd Edition) (SEI Series in Software Engineering), by Len Bass, Paul Clements, Rick Kazman

The award-winning and highly influential Software Architecture in Practice, Third Edition, has been substantially revised to reflect the latest developments in the field. In a real-world setting, the book once again introduces the concepts and best practices of software architecture—how a software system is structured and how that system’s elements are meant to interact. Distinct from the details of implementation, algorithm, and data representation, an architecture holds the key to achieving system quality, is a reusable asset that can be applied to subsequent systems, and is crucial to a software organization’s business strategy.

The authors have structured this edition around the concept of architecture influence cycles. Each cycle shows how architecture influences, and is influenced by, a particular context in which architecture plays a critical role. Contexts include technical environment, the life cycle of a project, an organization’s business profile, and the architect’s professional practices. The authors also have greatly expanded their treatment of quality attributes, which remain central to their architecture philosophy—with an entire chapter devoted to each attribute—and broadened their treatment of architectural patterns.

If you design, develop, or manage large software systems (or plan to do so), you will find this book to be a valuable resource for getting up to speed on the state of the art.

Totally new material covers

  • Contexts of software architecture: technical, project, business, and professional
  • Architecture competence: what this means both for individuals and organizations
  • The origins of business goals and how this affects architecture
  • Architecturally significant requirements, and how to determine them
  • Architecture in the life cycle, including generate-and-test as a design philosophy; architecture conformance during implementation; architecture and testing; and architecture and agile development
  • Architecture and current technologies, such as the cloud, social networks, and end-user devices

Ch. 19. Software Architecture in the Future

This book has been my go to book for most of my software architecture career. It is what taught me about quality attributes, tactics, and scenarios. It provided my first introduction to the Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM), the Quality Attribute Workshop (QAW), the Cost Benefit Analysis Method (CBAM), Active Reviews for Intermediate Designs (ARID), and the Attribute-Driven Design (ADD) method. In this new edition of the book they introduce the lightweight architecture evaluation. It is a slimmed-down version of ATAM. It is intended to be used on lower ceremony projects.

This new version has a ton of new material. One of the biggest changes is that the quality attributes covered now have their own chapter. There is a new chapter for Availability, Interoperability, Modifiability, Performance, Security, Testability, and Usability.

There is a new chapter dedicated to the technical, project, business, and professional contexts of software architecture. This chapter shows how architecture supports and is informed by other forces and activities in the different contexts.

Part four, Architecture and Business, contains three chapters dedicated to showing the relationships between the architecture and the business.

There is a new chapter on architecturally significant requirements and how to solicit those requirements from the goals set down by the business. This chapter introduces a new method for eliciting and documenting business goals in order to discover architecturally significant requirements. The new method is called Pedigreed Attribute eLicitation Method or PALM for short.

There is a new chapter on individual and organizational architectural competence. The chapter covers the technical duties of a software architect, the non-technical duties of a software architect, and the knowledge areas of the software architect. It also provides a framework for organizational architectural competence.

Part three, Architecture in the Life Cycle, shows how architecture relates to agile projects, shows how to elicit architecturally significant requirements, shows how to design the architecture and document the architecture, also how to test the architecture. Part three also covers how to reconstruct an architecture and evaluate an architecture.

One of my favorite new additions was chapter 27, Architectures for the Edge. An Edge dominant system is one that depends on the input of their users for success. Edge architectures that exist today are Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. It was just a really interesting read.

I could go on and on about the value of the content in this book. The bottom line is that if you are a software architect, or want to be one, this is mandatory reading, period.

Great content, but almost unreadable layout
By jensa
I would give five starts for the content so far, but I decided to give only two stars because the formatting of the e-book edition is really sub-standard. Right at the start of the first chapter, the quotation is printed with one character per line over many pages. Going on, formatting switches between left-aligned and justified which is hard to read because the text looks different in each section. Some sections are indented so much that there are only a few words per line, so the text looks like a small column over pages. I wonder how this could pass quality checks by the publisher because it looks like someone converted the text and did not check the result before selling it on Amazon.

All in all, I would advice every programmer or software architect to buy the book, but not the e-book.

A great reference for students and professionals.
By Dan
Used this text book for a Master's of Software Engineering course on System Architecture. I would say the book is more of a reference than a read and learn type of book. I say this as the first group of chapters (1-12) covers Engineering Objectives and Quality Attributes. For each Quality Attribute, there are a few examples of tactics to solve them (for instance, for availability they discuss hot-spares for swapping out a failed component with an active replacement). Throughout the course, these chapters were extremely useful when building the architecture of an online collaboration system. In addition, the book discuses how tactics (and specifically which ones) cause trade offs and how to analyze them for your unique use. I now use this book at work when discussing the structure of new/existing products and it comes in handy when needing to make a tough decision. It also helps the book is an easy and understandable read.
